Start the request in Threads, not Instagram: on the web, go to Menu → Settings → Account → Deactivate or delete profile → Delete profile. Deleting Instagram is different: Meta says it also deletes the Threads profile created with that Instagram account.
Meta calls it a Threads “profile,” though many people search for a Threads account. The labels and placement in the app can vary by version, language and region; the web route is the clearest documented path.
Before you delete: save what you may want to keep
Once deletion is complete, Meta says the Threads profile and its associated data cannot be recovered. Before submitting the request:
- Download a copy of your Threads information using Meta’s account-information download options. Export choices and processing time may vary.
- Save any posts, photos or videos you do not have elsewhere, and note usernames or contacts you may want later.
- Check whether you enabled fediverse sharing or whether other people reposted or quoted your content.
- Make sure you can still access the Instagram account linked to Threads, and check that Threads is signed into the profile you intend to remove.

How to delete Threads on the web
- Go to Threads.com and sign in to the profile you want to remove.
- Open Menu in the lower-left corner.
- Select Settings, then Account.
- Choose Deactivate or delete profile.
- Select Delete profile and follow the confirmation prompts. Before submitting, check that the final screen names the Threads profile—not your Instagram or Facebook account.
Meta requires you to sign in and submit the request yourself for security reasons; it says someone else cannot request deletion on your behalf. If you have multiple profiles, verify the profile name and photo before confirming.
How to delete Threads in the iPhone or Android app
Open Threads and look in the profile and menu settings for Account → Deactivate or delete profile → Delete profile, then complete the confirmation steps. The exact tap order and menu placement can vary with the app build, operating system, language and account configuration. If you cannot find the control, use the documented web route above.
Do not continue if a confirmation screen says it will delete your Instagram or Facebook account. The option you want identifies the Threads profile.

Deactivate or permanently delete?

Choose deactivation for a reversible break. Choose deletion if you want Threads removed and accept that recovery is unavailable once deletion is complete. Meta explains how to temporarily deactivate a Threads profile.

Meta’s help center says a Threads profile, its content, likes and followers are permanently deleted 30 days after the request. During that period, the profile’s content is not visible to other Threads users. Meta says the cancellation period may vary by region, so check the deadline shown for your account rather than treating 30 days as a universal guarantee.
To cancel, log back into Threads before the deadline and follow the cancellation confirmation. Logging in is part of Meta’s stated cancellation process; do not log in casually if you want deletion to proceed.

The 30-day period is not a promise that every copy disappears from every system on day 30. Meta’s terms say deletion from its systems can take up to 90 days after the process begins, and backup or disaster-recovery copies may persist for a further period of up to 90 days. Legal obligations, investigations, safety needs, technical limits and information retained by others can also affect removal. These timeframes are described in the archived Threads terms.
If you later want to register for Threads again using the same Instagram or Facebook account, Meta says you may have to wait up to 90 days after deletion. That is a possible delay, not a guaranteed wait for every account or region.

Will Instagram still work?
Yes. Deleting the Threads profile does not delete the linked Instagram account, its profile, posts or followers, according to Meta’s help documentation. You can open Instagram separately after submitting the request and check that it still opens, your profile is visible, and your posts and followers remain.

The reverse action is not safe if you want to keep Threads: deleting the Instagram or Facebook account used to create the Threads profile also deletes that associated Threads profile. Use Threads’ own profile-deletion control, and stop if Instagram’s account-deletion flow appears.
Older articles may say Threads cannot be deleted without deleting Instagram. That reflected the launch-era limitation, not Meta’s current standalone deletion instructions; for example, see TechCrunch’s July 2023 coverage.

If fediverse sharing was enabled, Meta says it will turn off sharing for the Threads profile and request deletion of the profile and content from other fediverse servers. Meta cannot guarantee that independent servers will comply, so copies may remain visible on third-party services. Other users may also have copied or retained content. Deleting your Threads profile is therefore not a guarantee that every public copy of a post disappears.

Meta’s guidance also says that if you cancel deactivation or deletion, you must wait 30 days from the relevant deactivation or deletion request before turning fediverse sharing back on. See Meta’s Threads deletion guidance and deactivation guidance.
If “Delete profile” is missing or an error appears
- Confirm you are in Threads, not Instagram, and signed into the intended Threads profile.
- Update the Threads app from the official app store, then check Settings → Account again.
- Try Threads.com in a browser and use Menu → Settings → Account → Deactivate or delete profile.
- If the option still fails, use Threads’ in-app problem-reporting route and describe the error.
If the profile is suspended, locked or otherwise inaccessible, normal deletion requires signing in. Meta says it cannot submit the request for you, so do not give your login details to a third-party deletion service.
If you chose deactivation by mistake—or changed your mind
Deactivation hides the profile but does not delete its data. Return to Settings → Account → Deactivate or delete profile and choose Delete profile if permanent removal is what you intended. If you already submitted a deletion request and want to keep Threads, log back in before the displayed deadline and confirm cancellation.
