You can reduce how much personal information is visible online, but you cannot reliably erase every copy of yourself from the internet. Work through the layers: remove material you control, close or pause accounts, ask websites to remove source content, request eligible search-result removals, and opt out of people-search sites. The 11 actions below are a practical checklist, not a guarantee that every item applies in every country.
What “deleting yourself from the internet” can—and cannot—do
Your online footprint is spread across accounts, websites, search indexes, data brokers, public records and copies other people may hold. Removing something from one layer does not automatically remove it from the others. For example, Google says a removed search result can still point to information that remains on the original website: Find and remove personal info in Google Search results.

Use the method that matches where the information lives. If it is on a profile you control, edit or delete it there. If it is on someone else’s site, contact the site. If it appears in Google Search, request removal from Search where eligible. If it is in a people-search database, use that site’s opt-out. These actions reduce exposure; none guarantees total erasure.

1. Remove personal details from profiles you control
Review social profiles, personal blogs, forums and other accounts you can still access. Delete old posts or edit public fields such as your phone number, home address, workplace and date of birth. Check both profile pages and older posts: changing a bio does not remove details published elsewhere on the same account.

Google’s personal-information removal process is intended for information you do not control yourself. If the information is on your own social page or blog, change it at the source first: Google’s Search removal guidance.
2. Make accounts private or hide profile details
If you want to keep an account, review its visibility and audience settings rather than deleting it. Limit who can see your profile, posts, contact details and friend or follower lists where the service allows it. This can reduce what is publicly visible, but it does not remove information already copied, saved or shown in other people’s posts.
3. Download important account data before closing anything
Before deleting an account, save any files, photos, contacts, messages or records you need. Google recommends reviewing and downloading account data before deletion. If the account’s email address is used to sign in to other services, update those services first so you do not lose access to them: Delete your Google Account.

4. Check connected services and dependencies
Make a short list of what depends on the account you plan to close: single sign-on for other apps, recovery email, cloud files, calendars, purchases and subscriptions. Deleting a Google Account also removes access to services such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar and Play. Facebook warns that deletion can affect Messenger and Facebook Login. Check the service’s current deletion instructions before proceeding; platform flows and retention rules can change. See Google Account deletion guidance and Facebook’s permanent-deletion guidance.
5. Deactivate an account if you only need a temporary pause
Deactivation is a hiding or pause option, not the same as deletion. Facebook says deactivation makes a profile not visible while preserving posts and allowing reactivation; permanent deletion is a separate action. Choose deactivation when you may return and deletion when you intend to close the account, after checking what data or access each option affects: Facebook Help: Permanently delete your Facebook account.
6. Delete accounts you no longer need
Once you have saved what you need and checked connected services, use each provider’s current account-deletion process. Account deletion can remove access to account data, purchases or linked services, and it does not necessarily retract content sent to other people. Facebook notes that messages already sent may remain in recipients’ inboxes. Its process information includes a 30-day period to cancel deletion and up to 90 days for removal of posted content; these are Facebook-specific policy details and can vary by region or policy updates. Read the current instructions before confirming: Facebook Help.

7. Ask the original website to remove the page or information
If someone else’s website hosts the material, contact the publisher or site owner and request removal or correction. This is the route that can remove content from the source itself, but a site may not be required to comply simply because you object. Search-result removal alone does not take the page off the website.
8. Request removal of eligible Google Search results
Use Google’s “Results about you” feature to find and request removal of eligible results showing contact details and some government identification numbers. Google’s availability and age eligibility can depend on market and account circumstances. For other sensitive information—such as financial account numbers, medical records, images of signatures or IDs, confidential credentials, or qualifying doxxing—follow the broader personal-information removal guidance. Provide the exact URLs and monitor the request status. Google may remove a result fully or only for searches containing your name or another identifier, and it can decline a request when it considers the information valuable to the public.
Start with Results about you and personal-info removal and, for other sensitive information or doxxing, see Remove my private info from Google Search. Even if Google approves a request, the page may remain on the source website and may still appear through links or in another search engine.

9. Use a legal delisting request where you are eligible
In the UK, you can ask a search engine to delist certain results involving personal data. It is not an automatic right to remove any unwanted link: the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) says it weighs factors including accuracy, relevance, whether the person is a child or public figure, the information’s age, potential harm and public interest. The ICO states that its guidance is under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act, so check the current rules before relying on it. This route is jurisdiction-specific, not a universal removal process: ICO guidance on internet search results.
10. Opt out of people-search sites one by one
Search for your name and identifying details on people-search services, then locate each site’s opt-out process and submit its request. Repeat on other services, and revisit periodically because information can reappear when underlying records change. The FTC describes this as a free manual route. It also warns that opting out does not erase public records or necessarily remove the same information from reports about relatives or associates: FTC: What To Know About People Search Sites That Sell Your Information.
11. Reduce what you publish publicly in the future
Before posting, check whether a profile field or post is public and whether it reveals details you do not want indexed or copied. This is prevention, not a way to erase information already collected or shared. Revisit privacy settings as your accounts and preferences change.

Manual opt-outs or a paid removal service?
Manual opt-outs avoid a service fee but require you to identify sites, submit requests and follow up. A paid service may save time, but it is not a guarantee that every listing will be removed or stay gone. The FTC suggests comparing services on these points:
- Site coverage: Which people-search websites does the service handle?
- Reporting: Does it provide a report showing what it found and what it requested?
- Repeat scans: How often does it look for newly discovered or reappearing information?
- Cost: Is the time saved worth the fee for your situation?
For either route, public records can remain accessible, and information may surface in a relative’s report. The FTC explains these limits in its people-search site guidance.
Choose the right removal route for each item
| Where the information appears | First action | What the action affects |
|---|---|---|
| Your profile or account | Edit, restrict visibility, deactivate or delete it | The account or content you control; copies held by others may remain |
| Someone else’s website | Ask the site owner or publisher to remove or correct it | The source page, if the publisher agrees or is otherwise required to act |
| Google Search results | Submit an eligible removal request with the relevant URL | The Google result; the source page can remain online |
| People-search database | Submit that site’s opt-out and check back later | The site’s existing listing; public records and other sites may remain |
| UK search results involving personal data | Request delisting from the search engine | Eligible results after a case-specific public-interest assessment |
A practical order for working through the cleanup
- List the exposure: Search your name and the specific details you want removed. Record the page or result URLs and whether the source is an account, publisher, search engine or people-search site.
- Start at the source: Edit or remove material on accounts you control. For someone else’s site, contact the publisher.
- Prepare before account deletion: Download needed data, move sign-ins and recovery options, and check files, purchases and connected services.
- Submit search requests: Use the relevant Google route for eligible personal information, or a UK delisting request if it applies to your circumstances.
- Opt out of broker listings: Use each site’s own process, keep track of submissions and revisit listings periodically.
- Review exposure again: Check for remaining source pages, newly visible results and broker listings that have returned.
There is no single request that completes every step: the source, account, search index and broker database each have separate controls.
