Choose the method based on your goal: delete selected files to keep using the drive, or erase and reformat it to clear the whole drive for reuse. If the drive held sensitive information and you plan to retire it, ordinary deletion or formatting may not be enough to establish that the data is unrecoverable.
Choose the right method for your goal

Delete selected files without erasing the drive
- Open the USB drive in File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac.
- Select the files or folders you want to remove, then use the operating system’s delete command.
- If the files go to the Recycle Bin or Trash, empty it to remove them from that holding area.
Emptying the bin does not mean the file contents have been overwritten. Microsoft explains that Windows does not necessarily zero the disk space used by a deleted file; recovery tools or raw-disk access may still reach data the operating system has deallocated. That describes file-system behavior, not a measured recovery result for every USB flash drive.

Erase and reformat a flash drive on Mac
Erasing removes the contents of the selected device. Apple’s Disk Utility guide warns, “Erasing a storage device deletes everything on it.” Copy any files you want to keep somewhere else before proceeding.

- Choose View > Show All Devices.
- Select the flash drive itself in the sidebar. Check its identity carefully so you do not erase another disk.
- Choose a partition scheme if one is available, then choose a file-system format and enter a name for the drive.
- Click Erase, then Done when the process finishes.
Apple’s Disk Utility guide covers this workflow for macOS versions including macOS 27, Tahoe 26, and earlier versions. The available format and scheme depend on the device and the options Disk Utility presents.

What Mac’s Security Options mean
Disk Utility shows Security Options only for some storage devices. If the control is absent, Disk Utility cannot perform a secure erase on that device. Apple also says Disk Utility’s secure-erase options are unavailable for SSDs, and recommends enabling FileVault when beginning to use an SSD for more security. That SSD guidance does not establish a verified secure-erase method for an ordinary USB thumb drive.
Erase a drive on Windows
Windows provides a format operation for removable drives. Confirm the selected drive letter and capacity before formatting; choosing the wrong device can destroy data you meant to keep. Back up needed files first.

For disposal, the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s guidance recommends formatting removable media on Windows with Quick Format unchecked. Its page was not directly accessible when checked, so treat that as the government guidance’s stated disposal recommendation—not as evidence that a full format sanitizes every flash-memory cell or any storage the drive controller has remapped.

Deleting files, formatting, and secure erasure are different outcomes. Formatting can prepare a drive for reuse, but the available guidance does not provide a flash-memory-specific guarantee that every cell has been overwritten. Flash-drive controllers may also make some storage difficult to address or wipe; the Australian Cyber Security Centre cautions that some removable media can be difficult to wipe correctly.

Microsoft’s SDelete is a command-line utility with options for deleting files and cleaning free space. Microsoft documents SDelete v2.06, published or updated March 5, 2026. Its default operation uses one overwrite pass, and its -c option cleans free space. The documentation also notes that cleaning free space does not securely delete file names in free disk space and discusses NTFS and FAT behavior. It does not validate SDelete as a universal sanitization method for every USB flash controller, so do not treat it as a guarantee for a thumb drive’s inaccessible or remapped storage.
If sensitive data was stored on a drive you are retiring and you cannot establish that it has been wiped adequately, follow an appropriate secure-media disposal procedure rather than relying on a normal format.
