Windows 11 and Windows 10 do not provide a documented built-in scanner that finds files with identical contents. For a few suspected copies, compare them in File Explorer; for larger collections, use a carefully reviewed PowerShell workflow or a duplicate-finder app. In every case, check the file paths and choose the copy to keep before deleting anything.
Choose the right way to free space
If you want to clean up storage generally, start with Windows’ built-in tools. If you need to find files that contain the same data, use a duplicate-detection method instead: cleanup tools and large-file lists are not content-based duplicate scans.

| Approach | Best suited to | What it tells you | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| File Explorer | A handful of suspected copies | Lets you compare paths, names, sizes, and dates | Those visible details do not prove that file contents match |
| PowerShell | Technical users working in a defined folder | Can enumerate files and support a script-based comparison | Requires a verified script and careful review; Microsoft’s cited guidance is not a duplicate-finder recipe |
| Graphical duplicate finder | Larger personal collections or users who want grouped results | Can present candidate groups for inspection | You still need to confirm what each result represents before deleting |
| Windows cleanup tools | General storage cleanup | Identify selected cleanup categories or large and unused items | Do not establish that two files have identical contents |
Use Windows cleanup tools for general storage recovery
Windows 11: review Cleanup recommendations
Open Start > Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Windows can show categories such as Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps, along with estimated space before you choose what to clean up. These are storage-cleanup suggestions, not a scan for duplicate file contents. Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance describes these options.

Windows 10: use Storage settings or Disk Cleanup
On Windows 10, review the Storage settings available on your version; Microsoft also documents Disk Cleanup where Storage Sense is unavailable, as well as manual review in File Explorer. Labels and available options can vary by Windows version. Microsoft’s free-up-drive-space guidance covers cleanup options for Windows 10 and 11.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Storage Sense can run automatically on the system drive and can be configured to manage items such as the Recycle Bin or Downloads. Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you specify them in its settings. It does not serve as a documented duplicate-content detector. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance explains its storage-management settings.
Review a few suspected copies in File Explorer
For a small number of files, inspect the folders where you expect copies to be—for example, Pictures, Downloads, Music, or Videos. Switch to Details view and compare the full folder path, name, size, and modified date. You can sort by size to bring large files into view, but a matching name or size alone does not show that two files are identical.

- Open the relevant folder in File Explorer and choose View > Details.
- Compare candidate files’ folder locations, names, sizes, and dates. Open them if you need to confirm which version is the one you want.
- Decide which file should remain. If it is important, make a separate copy to storage you control before removing another version.
- Delete only the copy you have identified as unnecessary. Emptying the Recycle Bin may be necessary before that space is fully reclaimed.
These are manual checks: File Explorer’s visible attributes are useful for triage, not proof of identical contents. Microsoft describes sorting by size and the Recycle Bin in its storage cleanup guidance.

PowerShell can list files recursively and remove files, but a duplicate finder requires a comparison method and a careful review step. Microsoft documents Get-ChildItem with -Recurse for enumerating files and Remove-Item for removal; its file-system documentation does not provide a complete duplicate-grouping script.

A hash-based workflow compares a full-content hash and groups candidate files with matching hashes. That is strong evidence that the files contain identical bytes; matching filenames are not. Treat the first stage as discovery: produce a report of candidate paths, inspect the groups, and choose the file to retain before removing anything. Do not run a bulk-delete command on an unreviewed list or assume that a script from an unrelated source has been validated for your folders.
Use a graphical duplicate finder for larger collections
dupeGuru’s project repository documents Standard, Music, and Picture modes. Its results are grouped around a reference file and candidate duplicates. The project’s help documentation recommends reviewing results before sending marked files to the Recycle Bin.

Review the full paths and open files when you are unsure which copy is the right one. A release note for dupeGuru 4.3.1, released July 9 (the year is not displayed in the cited release-page excerpt), records a fix for an issue that could mark non-duplicates in a standard content scan. That is a reason to inspect the results, not a basis for assuming every result is wrong. See the project release page for its release information. Understand OneDrive files that appear to free space
OneDrive files may be stored locally or available online only. Storage Sense can make inactive OneDrive content online-only without permanently deleting it; it can be made locally available again with a network connection and free disk space. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from this behavior. That is different from deleting a duplicate: a change in local disk use does not by itself mean a file was removed. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense explanation.

Start with a personal folder, not system files
For duplicate cleanup, begin with one personal location such as Downloads, Pictures, or a dedicated archive. Preview a small set, verify the paths and contents, and remove only files you have deliberately chosen not to keep. Avoid using a broad scan-and-delete process on Windows or application folders. If the goal is simply to reclaim space rather than find identical copies, use Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense, or Disk Cleanup instead.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date; deleting duplicate files does not change the operating system’s support status. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 troubleshooting and support page.
