To delete an iPhone app, touch and hold its icon, tap Remove App, choose Delete App, then confirm with Delete. If that last option is missing, check Screen Time restrictions, device management, and any app that limits phone use. Some built-in Apple apps cannot be deleted.
How do I delete apps on my iPhone?
- Find the app on your Home Screen or in the App Library. If you cannot locate it, swipe down from the middle of the Home Screen and search for its name with Spotlight.
- Touch and hold the app icon. On the Home Screen, tap Remove App, then Delete App.
- Confirm by tapping Delete.
In the App Library, touch and hold the app, choose Delete App, and confirm. Apple’s instructions for removing apps are in its iPhone user guide; Apple also says apps can be deleted from Spotlight in its app deletion support article.

What is the difference between deleting an app and removing it from the Home Screen?

Choose Remove from Home Screen if you only want to tidy the Home Screen. Choose Delete App to remove the app from the device.

If Delete App is not offered, work through these checks. Apple recommends updating iOS and checking the restrictions or management settings that can prevent deletion.

Check Screen Time deletion restrictions
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases, then Deleting Apps.
- If deletion is blocked, change the setting to Allow. If Screen Time is controlled by a parent or guardian, ask them to change the restriction.

Check whether the iPhone is managed
Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and look for a management profile. If the iPhone belongs to or is managed by an organisation, ask its IT administrator or employer whether the app can be removed.

Check third-party restriction apps
Some apps that limit phone use can interfere with deleting apps. Check the settings of any such app installed on the iPhone. Apple lists Screen Zen, Cape, Opal, Freedom, and Refocus as examples; contact the app’s developer if its settings do not resolve the issue.

Consider whether the app is built in
Not every built-in Apple app can be deleted. Which built-in apps are removable can depend on region; Apple says additional built-in apps may be deletable in the European Union. See Apple’s guide to deleting built-in apps for details.

What happens to subscriptions and data when you delete an app?
Deleting an app does not automatically cancel an in-app subscription. Cancel a subscription separately if you no longer want it; Apple explains this in its app deletion support article.
Deleting an app also does not necessarily erase everything associated with it. Photos or documents stored in iCloud remain there when the app is deleted. Removing a built-in app, however, may remove related user data and configuration files or affect related system functions. Apple’s built-in app guidance describes these effects.

Can you restore an app after deleting it?
You can download a deleted app again from the App Store if it is still available. To restore a built-in Apple app, search the App Store for its exact name, as Apple recommends in its built-in app guide.

Why is there no Delete App option?
- Update iOS, then check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Deleting Apps and allow deletion if it is restricted.
- Check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management; if the iPhone is managed, contact the organisation’s administrator.
- Review settings in third-party apps that restrict phone use; contact their developer if needed.
- If the app is built in, check whether that particular app can be deleted in your region.
