All three remove a local Windows account from that device; they do not close the person’s online Microsoft account. Two related actions—disconnecting a work or school account and deleting a user profile—are different operations, not extra account-deletion methods.
Before removing an account, protect its files
Removing an account through Settings is labeled “Account and data,” and Microsoft says the action removes the person’s sign-in information and data from the device. Copy any files you need to another location or confirm they are backed up before proceeding. Windows Backup can back up folders and sync settings with a Microsoft account, but check that the specific local files you want to keep are included. See Microsoft’s Windows Backup guidance.

Also confirm you are removing the intended account. If it is an administrator account, make sure another usable administrator account remains on the PC. Microsoft recommends limiting administrator accounts because administrators have complete control of the system. Microsoft’s account-management guidance covers account types and management.
Three ways to remove a local user account
1. Use Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts > Other users.
- Under Other users, expand the account you want to remove.
- Next to Account and data, select Remove and confirm.
This is Microsoft’s standard Windows 11 route. Microsoft explains that removing an account this way does not delete that person’s Microsoft account; it removes the sign-in information and data from this device. Manage user accounts in Windows.

2. Use Command Prompt with net user
Microsoft’s net user command supports deleting a specified user account and lists Windows 11 as an applicable product. Open Command Prompt with appropriate administrator rights, verify the local account name, then run:
net user "AccountName" /delete
Replace AccountName with the account’s actual name. Do not add /domain unless you intend to act on a domain account; that switch changes the scope of the command. See the Microsoft net user reference, last updated August 6, 2025.

3. Use PowerShell with Remove-LocalUser
For a local account, Microsoft documents this PowerShell command:
Remove-LocalUser -Name "AccountName"
Replace AccountName with the exact local account name. This removes a local Windows user; it does not close an online Microsoft account. The command is documented in Microsoft’s Remove-LocalUser reference.

Two related actions that are not account deletion
4. Disconnect a work or school account
If your goal is to remove an organization’s connection from this PC, use Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, select the connection, then choose Disconnect. Microsoft says this removes the account’s sign-in information and data from the device; it does not delete the organization account. Use this for a connection you no longer want on the PC, not to remove a Windows user. See Microsoft’s work or school account guidance.
5. Delete a user profile only when troubleshooting calls for it
A Windows user profile is not the account identity. Profile deletion is a separate troubleshooting or cleanup task and should not be treated as another way to delete the user account. Microsoft documents a separate procedure for deleting a user profile in Windows; follow it only when profile cleanup is what you need.
