You can make Android Auto feel less busy without installing anything: hide or reorder apps in its launcher from your phone’s settings. That only changes which launcher entries appear, though. Message alerts and music that starts automatically have separate controls, and parts of Android Auto’s interface remain visible.
Hide or reorder apps in the Android Auto launcher
Make the changes while parked. On many phones, the direct route is Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto > Customize launcher. Phone makers and software versions may use different menu paths; if you cannot find Android Auto there, search for “Android Auto” in your phone’s Settings.

- Open Customize launcher.
- Hide the apps or options you do not want in the launcher, and drag the remaining entries into your preferred order.
- Exit Android Auto and restart it so the changes appear on the car display.
Google describes the launcher as a grid of compatible navigation, media, and communication apps, alongside an Exit option and assistant actions. Its position and arrangement can vary with the car display’s dimensions. Google’s Android Auto launcher documentation explains how the launcher is organized and customized.
What launcher cleanup changes—and what it does not
Hiding an app removes its entry from the launcher; it is not a general-purpose switch for every Android Auto screen or alert. The navigation bar, notification indicator, and recent-app area are separate interface elements, so they may remain even after you simplify the launcher. Adjust message alerts separately
If the interruption is a message chime or notification rather than an unwanted launcher icon, look in Android Auto’s Messaging settings for controls to turn off the message chime or hide message notifications. The labels and location can vary by version, so search for Android Auto in phone Settings if you do not see those options. These controls affect message alerts; they do not determine which apps appear in the launcher. Android Central’s Android Auto settings guide describes these options.
Stop music from starting automatically
If music begins as soon as the phone connects, look under the Start-up section of Android Auto settings for Start music automatically and turn it off. This setting addresses automatic playback, not launcher clutter or message notifications. Menu wording may differ across versions; search Android Auto settings if you cannot locate it. If an app is missing from the launcher
An app that disappears is not necessarily hidden through Customize launcher. Google notes that some Samsung phones may temporarily disable apps that are not used. Opening the app can re-enable it; you can also check the phone’s battery settings for a control named Auto-disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep. The available wording depends on the phone. Choose only the changes you want
Launcher visibility, message alerts, and automatic playback are separate settings. Change only the ones that address the clutter or interruption you actually notice; there is no need to disable navigation or all communications to tidy the launcher. The result is a more selective launcher and, if you change the other controls, fewer chosen alerts or automatic playback—not a removal of every system element from Android Auto.
