A Soulslike is more likely to suit you if deliberate combat, learning enemy patterns, and retrying after failure sound satisfying—not if you expect fights to yield quickly to button-mashing. The genre is not uniform: some games give you room to explore or change tactics when stuck, while others ask you to master a more focused style of combat. Judge the specific game by how it handles those moments, not by its reputation for difficulty.
Start with the kind of challenge you enjoy
In Souls-style combat, attention and timing matter. Bandai Namco describes a loop of watching an enemy’s movements, choosing when to attack or evade, learning patterns, and taking advantage of openings. If you enjoy reading a fight and adjusting your decisions, that can feel strategic. If you mainly want to keep attacking until an opponent falls, the same pacing may feel slow or demanding.

Failure is also part of the intended learning loop in at least some defining games. In a 2011 interview, Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki described it this way: “The main concept has not changed: You try something, die, learn from your mistakes, and eventually overcome those mistakes.” That describes the design intent, not a guarantee that every player will find repeated attempts enjoyable. Ask yourself whether a failed attempt would make you curious to try a different tactic—or ready to stop.
Check what you can do when you get stuck
Being stuck does not mean the same thing in every Soulslike. Before buying, look for whether the particular game lets you step away from a difficult encounter, explore another route, change your equipment or build, summon help, or use stealth. Those options can change how you approach a challenge without removing it.

Elden Ring: more room to change your approach
Miyazaki’s 2022 interview about Elden Ring describes a design that lets players leave an impasse and return later. Bandai Namco’s overview of Elden Ring and Souls mechanics also describes its open world, weapon and equipment choices, summons, and Spirit Ashes as ways to approach challenges. The game has no conventional easy-mode setting, but those options can affect how difficult an encounter feels for you. Its open structure may appeal if you want to explore elsewhere rather than keep attempting one obstacle immediately.
Sekiro: a different toolkit, not a promise of an easier ride
Activision’s interview with FromSoftware about Sekiro describes stealth, movement, prosthetic tools, and combat choices as part of its approach. The interview also cautions that players who choose direct confrontation may find it as challenging as, or more challenging than, the studio’s previous titles. That is a useful reminder that a different set of tools does not necessarily mean an easier game.

Compare the specific game on five questions
- Combat feel: Does the game emphasize deliberate timing and evasion, or a different action style? If the feel of controlling a character is your main concern, watch representative gameplay before you buy.
- Options when stuck: Can you leave, explore, adjust a build, summon help, or use stealth—or does progress depend more heavily on mastering a particular encounter?
- Retry tolerance: Does the idea of learning through repeated attempts sound motivating, or draining?
- Structure: Would you rather have an open world where you choose when to tackle challenges, or a more linear route with branching paths? Bandai Namco distinguishes Elden Ring’s open-world structure from earlier, more linear Souls games.
- Play-style variety: Do you want broad weapon and equipment choices, or variety built around a more distinctive toolkit such as Sekiro’s stealth and prosthetic tools?
These are comparison questions, not a universal ranking. The official sources describe particular games and their design aims; they do not establish how difficult every Soulslike is or how every player will respond to it.

You may be a good fit if
- You enjoy paying attention to enemy behavior and timing your attacks or evasions.
- You can treat a failed attempt as information and are willing to adjust your approach.
- You like the prospect of choosing routes, equipment, or tactics rather than relying on one solution.
Consider waiting or watching gameplay first if
- Repeated failure tends to make a game feel frustrating rather than engaging.
- You want to know that a conventional easy-mode setting is available; do not assume that a game’s other options amount to one.
- You are unsure whether its combat pace or control style will feel good to you.
If exploration and alternate approaches are what attract you, Elden Ring is one concrete example to investigate, not a stand-in for the whole genre. Its Steam product page confirms the storefront listing; check the listing for your platform, region, edition, and current price before purchasing.

What the difficulty reputation can—and cannot—tell you
Miyazaki said of Elden Ring’s challenge, “We don’t try to force difficulty or make things hard for the sake of it,” in a January 2022 PlayStation.Blog interview. That is a statement of design intent, not evidence that every player will experience the game as fair or enjoyable. Likewise, publisher descriptions of mechanics explain available approaches but are not independent reviews or proof of broad accessibility. The useful question is not whether a Soulslike is simply “too hard”; it is whether its particular kind of challenge, retry loop, and flexibility match what you want from a game.
