A demo can tell you whether a slice of a PC game appeals to you; it cannot guarantee that the full game will deliver the same experience throughout. Before buying, test the core gameplay and how it feels and runs on your PC, then list what the demo leaves untested. Decide whether the evidence you have—and the unanswered questions—justify the full price.
What a demo can—and cannot—tell you
Steam describes demos as free opportunities to try a game before buying. Their size and scope vary: a demo is generally a small playable portion meant to showcase some core mechanics, not a promise that every mode, chapter, system, or later stage will match what you tried. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says customers use demos to make purchase decisions and advises developers to make them high-quality and representative. That is guidance for developers, not a guarantee about any individual demo.

Use the demo as evidence about the parts it actually contains. A strong opening does not establish that later progression or the endgame will be satisfying; a short or limited sample may leave your most important questions unanswered.
How to evaluate a demo before buying
- Name your must-haves. Decide what would make the game worth its price to you: for example, a particular gameplay loop, challenge level, story tone, control scheme, multiplayer mode, accessibility feature, or session length. If the demo does not include the relevant part, mark it as unknown rather than assuming it will suit you.
- Try the repeatable core loop. Play enough to see the basic actions and decisions you would return to. Ask whether those actions are enjoyable, not just whether the tutorial or opening is polished.
- Notice friction on your setup. Pay attention to controls, interface, camera, readability, and performance. These are practical checks, not an official Steam scoring rubric. A problem that makes the demo uncomfortable to play may matter in the full game, while good performance in a short sample cannot establish how the game will run in content the demo omits.
- Separate evidence from unknowns. Write down what you actually experienced and what the demo did not show—such as other modes, later story chapters, progression systems, or endgame content. Do not treat missing content as proof that it is either good or bad.
- Check requirements and save continuity. Compare your PC with the full game’s listed system requirements; Steam explicitly includes not meeting hardware requirements among possible reasons to request a refund. Also check whether the developer says demo progress carries into the full game. Steam supports optional demo/full-game cloud-save sharing, but the developer must configure it, so continuity is not automatic. See Steamworks’ demo documentation for the save-sharing option and the game’s store page for its specific details.
- Judge the full price, not just the demo. Ask whether what you learned makes the game worth its full price to you, given the remaining unknowns. If a key feature or mode is absent from the demo, decide whether you are comfortable buying without testing it.
How Steam’s refund window fits into the decision
Steam’s general policy says a game purchase is usually eligible for a refund when requested within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Steam Support says online, offline, and shared-library playtime all count toward that two-hour limit. Read the current Steam refund policy and Steam Support’s common refund questions before relying on it. Store rules and consumer rights can differ by platform and jurisdiction, so Steam’s conditions should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

A practical buy-or-wait test
- Buy: The demo shows the gameplay you care about, it feels good on your setup, and the price seems worthwhile even with any untested parts.
- Wait or look for more information: A must-have mode, feature, or type of content is missing from the demo, and you are not comfortable paying before learning more.
- Skip: The core loop or basic controls already feel wrong for you. A promise of more content does not change what you disliked about the part you played.
