How to Decide Whether a Foldable Phone Is Worth the Extra Cost

A foldable earns its extra cost when its larger inner screen or compact folded form will solve a recurring need. Compare exact models, local prices, and support before buying.

A foldable phone is worth paying extra for when you will regularly use what its shape makes possible: a larger inner screen for reading or multitasking, or a smaller folded phone with useful cover-screen controls. If those benefits would be occasional novelties, compare a conventional phone—or a phone and tablet together—before spending more. The right answer depends on your habits, the exact model and price, and the support available where you live.

Which kind of foldable fits your needs?

Book-style and flip-style phones solve different problems. Samsung Mobile Press puts it simply: “The best foldable isn’t the same for everyone.” That is company guidance, but it is a useful way to frame the decision: start with the task you want the folding design to improve, not with the novelty of the hinge.

Book-style: a larger screen when opened

A book-style phone opens horizontally to reveal a larger display. It may be a better fit if you expect to read, watch video, edit, or use multiple apps on the expanded screen often enough to justify carrying a thicker device. Ask whether you will actually do those things on the phone, rather than assuming that a bigger screen will change your habits.

Flip-style: a smaller phone when closed

A flip-style phone folds vertically into a more compact shape. Its cover screen may let you handle quick tasks without opening the phone, but its usefulness depends on which apps and actions work there. Check whether an activity continues smoothly when you open the device, and whether the closed phone feels comfortable to carry and use.

How often will you use the defining feature?

Samsung’s buying guidance says foldables cost more than traditional phones and that their value depends on how often you use the larger screen, compact form, or hands-free features. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, then test it against a normal week in your own life.

  • List the recurring moments when a larger inner display would genuinely help: for example, reading or viewing material that feels cramped on your current phone.
  • For a flip-style phone, identify quick tasks you would handle on the cover screen and confirm that the specific model supports them.
  • Consider whether hands-free use is a practical, repeated benefit for you or simply a feature that sounds appealing.

If you cannot name recurring uses, the premium may buy a feature you rarely value. A conventional large-screen phone may be the simpler choice.

Compare the complete cost with the alternative

Which? gives a broad UK launch-price range of around £700 to £2,000 for foldables and notes that a good phone and tablet bought separately may be an alternative. This is a consumer guide’s broad range, not a live quote or a price that applies to every model or market. Compare current local prices for the exact storage tier and include any trade-in or financing conditions, a compatible case if you want one, and the price of the conventional phone-and-tablet combination you would otherwise buy.

Do not compare a foldable’s headline price with only one part of an alternative setup. If the open screen would replace a tablet you would otherwise purchase, include that tablet in the comparison; if not, do not count hypothetical savings as value.

What to check on the models you shortlist

Once you have a reason to consider a foldable, compare actual models against conventional phones in the same budget. Tom’s Guide recommends looking beyond the inner display to the external screen, app continuity, closed-phone comfort, processor, cameras, and battery.

  • Screen utility: Check the inner display’s size and shape, then decide whether it suits the reading, viewing, editing, or multitasking you expect to do.
  • Cover-screen behavior: Confirm which apps and tasks work while the phone is closed and whether an activity carries on when you open it.
  • Carry comfort: Compare folded thickness, width, and weight with the benefit of the larger screen. Handle the closed phone if possible.
  • Battery, cameras, and performance: Compare the exact foldable with conventional phones at a similar price. A test result for one model does not predict another model’s battery life.
  • Durability and support: Check the model’s own ingress rating, handling guidance, warranty, repair access, and any protection-plan exclusions in your market.
  • Total cost: Use the current price and storage tier, and account for trade-in or financing conditions and any compatible case you choose to buy.

What durability ratings and battery tests can—and cannot—tell you

Durability claims are model-specific. Samsung says its latest Galaxy Z Fold8 series has IP48 water resistance, while cautioning that resistance is not permanent and that beach or pool use is not advised. Do not assume that rating applies to another foldable, or that a water-resistance rating makes a phone suitable for every wet or sandy setting. Samsung also says flexible displays and hinges “require careful handling as a premium device”; that is the manufacturer’s guidance, not a category-wide failure statistic. No broad, independently sourced failure rate is established here.

Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold - Unlocked Smartphone, Gemini - 256 GB - Obsidian
  • Designed for Gemini Intelligence, brighter screens, and a more durable design, the new Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold delivers eye-opening performance and makes multitasking effortless[1,2,3]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[4]
  • As stunning as it is strong: Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s ultra-durable composite back is lighter, stronger, and designed to be nearly impossible to crack[5,6]; and with scratch-resistant glass and an all-new hinge, it’s 3x stronger[5]
  • Unfold the fun: Drift away into immersive entertainment on the brighter-than-ever 8-inch screen[2]; take it into tabletop mode for hands-free streaming of your favorite content
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones

Battery figures also depend on the device and test. Tom’s Guide reported 16 hours and 20 minutes for the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 in its battery-drain test, and 14 hours and 44 minutes for the Razr Fold in the same comparison. These are that publication’s test results, not typical-use guarantees or a category-wide battery measure.

Use a practical buy-or-skip rule

  • Consider buying if a book-style screen or flip-style compact form would solve a recurring problem, the specific model’s screens and core phone features suit you, and its price compares well with the complete alternative.
  • Consider skipping if the folding feature is mostly novelty, you do not expect to use the defining screen or compact form regularly, or a conventional phone better fits your budget and habits.

Before committing, verify local warranty and repair support, along with the current price and terms of any optional protection plan. Availability and recommendations change by model and market, so a guide’s ranking is not a substitute for checking what is sold and supported where you are.
