The inspector gives you access to the page’s DOM, styles, JavaScript console, scripts, network requests, and performance timelines. Apple’s instructions for inspecting iOS and iPadOS cover the connection and device setup.
Set up Safari Web Inspector on an iPhone
- Enable Web Inspector on the iPhone. Open Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced, then turn on Web Inspector. Labels can vary with operating-system releases, so check the current Safari settings if the path differs.
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac. Use a cable that fits both devices. If the iPhone asks whether to trust the Mac, approve it.
- Enable the Develop menu on the Mac if needed. In Safari, open Safari > Settings > Advanced and enable Show features for web developers. Apple says developer features are off by default. See Apple’s instructions for enabling developer features.
- Open the page on the iPhone. Keep the relevant page open in Safari on the phone.
- Open its inspector from the Mac. In Mac Safari, choose Develop, select the iPhone, then select the webpage listed beneath it. A Web Inspector window opens for that page. It follows the selected tab as it navigates; closing the iPhone tab closes that inspector window.
Apple also supports connecting over a network, but first establish the wired connection. Then, in Safari on the Mac, open Develop, choose the device submenu, and enable Connect via Network. Network connection can also be configured through Xcode. The device must still have Web Inspector enabled. See Apple’s device-inspection guide.
Choose the right place to investigate
Start by reproducing the problem on the phone and noting the action that triggers it. Then use the inspector area that matches the symptom. Change one thing at a time and record whether the behavior changes.

A practical debugging sequence
- Reproduce the issue on the iPhone and note the exact interaction that triggers it.
- Check Console for errors or warnings around that interaction.
- Check Network for failed requests, unexpected responses, or slow resources.
- Use Elements to inspect the affected node and its styles; if the issue appears script-driven, use Sources and breakpoints to follow execution.
- If timing or rendering is the concern, inspect Timelines rather than inferring the cause from the visible result alone.
- Make one change, repeat the same interaction, and note the result so you can distinguish cause from coincidence.
When to use Responsive Design Mode—and when to use the phone
Safari’s Responsive Design Mode on Mac is useful for quickly trying different viewport widths, heights, and display pixel ratios. Apple says it can be used alongside Web Inspector while resizing a page. It is a useful first check for responsive layout and CSS issues, but it does not prove that behavior matches a real iPhone: Apple notes that iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS have rendering behavior that differs from macOS, reflecting different form factors and interaction models. Confirm bugs tied to iOS rendering or touch interaction on the actual device when possible. See Apple’s Responsive Design Mode guide.

Automate repeatable Safari checks with WebDriver
For repeatable browser interactions and regression checks, Apple supports WebDriver automation for Safari on iPhone and iPad. This is a separate workflow from opening Web Inspector to investigate a one-off problem.

- Write tests using a compatible WebDriver client library and language to automate the browser interactions you need to repeat.

Troubleshoot connection and inspection problems
- The Develop menu is missing: In Mac Safari, go to Safari > Settings > Advanced and enable Show features for web developers.
- The iPhone does not appear in Develop: Confirm Web Inspector is enabled on the phone, connect it to the Mac, and approve the trust prompt if shown. Apple’s documented network option requires establishing the wired connection first.
- The device appears, but the page does not: Open the page in Safari on the iPhone and leave that tab available. In Mac Safari’s Develop menu, expand the device and select the page listed there.
- The inspector closes unexpectedly: The inspector is tied to the selected iPhone tab; closing that tab closes its inspector window. Reopen the page and select it again from the Develop menu.
- You need wireless inspection: First connect by cable. Then use the device submenu under Mac Safari’s Develop menu to enable Connect via Network.
- A layout works in the Mac preview but fails on iPhone: Use Responsive Design Mode to narrow down dimensions, then verify on the real iPhone because iOS rendering and interaction behavior can differ from macOS.
- The site looks different after returning to it: Inspect cookies and other saved data in Storage to check whether persisted state is relevant.
