What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Debug a voice AI failure by tracing one turn from connection setup through audio transport, events, application work, and playback. First classify what failed—connection, capture, events, response time, call quality, or your application—then investigate that part of the path before changing prompts or models.
What kind of failure are you seeing?
Write down the symptom and deployment path before changing anything. Browser WebRTC, server-side audio pipelines, and phone or SIP integrations have different setup and event flows; a shared transport label does not make their handshakes, credentials, or event formats interchangeable. OpenAI’s audio and voice guide describes these as distinct workflows.

| Symptom | First area to inspect | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| The session never connects or becomes ready | Setup, credentials, signaling, and session lifecycle | Connection responses, session or call ID, and the first setup error |
| The agent cannot hear the user | Permission, input device, microphone track, and media negotiation | Permission result, track state, and incoming audio activity |
| The user is heard but the agent does not respond | Control events, application logic, tool calls, and server errors | Event type and ID, correlated request logs, and application response |
| The agent responds, but too slowly | Recognition, application work, generation, and media delivery | Timestamps for each stage and the first audible response |
| Audio is choppy, silent, or one-way | Media path and call quality, separately from control events | Track state, playback, packet or call-quality indicators, and transport changes |
| A phone call fails or behaves unexpectedly | Telephony provider requests, configured endpoint, and application errors | Debugger records, request and response details, call logs, and error code |
Use a single failing turn as your unit of analysis. Record when the user began and finished speaking, what the client sent, what the server received, when the application acted, and when audio reached the user. This gives you a timeline to test rather than a vague impression that “the model is slow” or “the prompt is wrong.”

For browser WebRTC
Check that the page is served over HTTPS or localhost and that the browser granted microphone access. Then trace setup in order: acquire microphone tracks; create the peer connection’s data channel and register event listeners; create and set the local SDP offer; send the offer to your trusted server for session exchange; apply the returned SDP answer; and wait for session.started before issuing application commands. These prerequisites and the session flow are described in OpenAI’s WebRTC guide.

If a command is sent before the documented start event, the visible symptom may look like broken application logic even though the session was not ready. Log each setup transition and its timestamp so you can identify the last successful step.
For server pipelines and phone integrations
Confirm the setup flow for the transport you actually use, rather than borrowing browser assumptions. OpenAI maps browser audio to WebRTC, server-side audio pipelines to WebSockets, and phone calls to telephony or SIP; the Agents SDK likewise recommends choosing based on whether the product is browser-based, server-operated, or connected to another media system. See the audio guide, Voice Agents guide, and Realtime Transport Layer guide.
Keep project API keys and session configuration on a trusted server. The WebRTC setup documentation describes server-mediated session initialization and says to keep the key and configuration server-side.

Can you see the control events and the media independently?
Do not assume that audio and application events travel through one observable stream. In WebRTC, audio uses media tracks while JSON control events—such as transcripts and session updates—use a data channel. With WebSocket, events share one ordered channel. That difference affects what your logs can prove and how transport changes may alter the symptoms; OpenAI explains the distinction in its Realtime conversations guide.
- For input audio: confirm microphone permission, that a track was acquired and added to the peer connection, and that negotiation completed.
- For output audio: confirm a remote media stream arrived and is connected to the intended playback element or audio path.
- For control: confirm the data channel opened and that expected events arrived, independently of whether audio was present.
- After a transport change: check event flow and ordering again; do not assume logs from one transport represent all media and control activity in another.
If a server must process transcripts, run private tools, authorize actions, or control a session, OpenAI documents attaching a server-side sideband WebSocket to an existing WebRTC or SIP session. This allows the browser to carry primary audio while the server handles control. Keep credentials and business rules on the server, and account for buffering: OpenAI notes that “Buffering adds latency.” See Server-side controls.
What should you log to reconstruct one failed turn?
Build a compact trace that lets you join the client, provider, and application records. Capture only data appropriate for your privacy and retention requirements; avoid logging secrets or unnecessary raw conversation content.

OpenAI’s Realtime guide describes using event_id to identify client events that caused server-side errors. Preserve that identifier with your session and request correlation fields so a server error can be tied to the triggering client action.

Start with Twilio’s Debugger and Request Inspector, then follow logs and error codes between the provider and your application. Twilio explicitly identifies those tools as first stops when a call fails or behaves unexpectedly in its voice troubleshooting documentation. Inspect the request and response to the configured endpoint. If the reported problem is an application error, Twilio’s documentation identifies an unavailable configured URL or errors in the application code as possible causes; establish that the endpoint was reached and what it returned before changing conversational behavior.
Where is the delay in the turn?
Measure separate intervals rather than treating the full silence after a user speaks as one “model latency” number. Where your telemetry permits, time the end of the user’s speech to transcription, application or tool work, first generated audio, and network or media delivery. The dominant component is the one to investigate first.

Twilio Conversation Relay Insights breaks latency into speech-to-text, text-to-speech, network, and application components. Its documentation says to use streaming rather than waiting for a full transcription when application latency is high. These are vendor-defined diagnostic measures and guidance, not universal performance guarantees. See Conversation Relay Insights Dashboard.
| Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Twilio describes natural conversational gaps as a few hundred milliseconds, says delays over one second feel slow, and says delays over two seconds can break conversational flow. | Twilio’s user-experience guidance, not a benchmark proving that every user or application has the same threshold. |
| Twilio gives a target of less than 1,200 ms on the upper bound for natural-feeling turn-taking. | A target in Twilio’s Conversation Relay Insights documentation, not an industry standard or guarantee. |
| Twilio says its STT latency measurement is typically accurate within 100 ms for English and may vary up to 250 ms for other languages. | Measurement accuracy caveat for the documented metric; it is not an acceptable-latency threshold. |
| Twilio marks outbound RTP latency above 150 ms as high latency. | A Twilio-internal media-edge measure, not end-to-end voice-agent latency; the definition is in Twilio’s Voice Insights FAQ. |
When one stage dominates, make a targeted change and retake the same kind of trace. For example, if application time is the bottleneck, inspect blocking work and whether you can stream or start useful work earlier; if the application responds quickly but audio arrives late, investigate generation and media delivery instead.
How do you verify a fix in production?
Use repeated observations across affected calls or sessions, not a single call that sounded better. Twilio Voice Insights describes real-time call quality, carrier analytics, and WebRTC performance. Conversation Relay Insights offers signals for interruptions, silence, handling time, latency, connection failures, error patterns, and regressions, with comparisons across agents, periods, countries, and configuration changes. These dashboards can help check whether the component you changed improved; they do not by themselves establish the cause of every failure.

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
Twilio defines RTP latency in its FAQ as average and maximum Twilio-internal media-stream traversal time based on ingress and egress packet timestamps. Its stated outbound threshold applies to that measure only. The FAQ also says Advanced Features data begins after activation, so an absence of historical interval metrics from before activation is not evidence that no issue occurred.
Keep the diagnosis tied to the symptom: prove the session became ready, prove audio and control worked on their respective paths, follow the event or request that failed, then compare stage timings and production signals after a focused change. Change prompts or models only when the trace points to response quality or model behavior rather than setup, transport, or application handling.
