Debug Docker by locating the failing layer before changing settings: daemon availability, image build, container creation, application startup, networking, storage, permissions, or host integration. Run docker info first. If it cannot reach the engine, fix the daemon or Docker Desktop; if it succeeds, inspect the specific container, image, network, or volume involved.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
This workflow covers Linux, macOS, Windows with WSL2, rootful and rootless engines, bind mounts and named volumes, and the failure messages people most often encounter.

Docker has several layers, and a symptom in one layer can look like a problem in another. The Docker Engine includes the long-running dockerd daemon, a command-line client, and managed images, containers, networks, and volumes. A reliable diagnosis starts by identifying which object or boundary failed.
- Daemon: the CLI cannot connect, or commands hang before listing objects.
- Build: a Dockerfile step fails while creating an image.
- Container creation or startup: the image builds, but the container never reaches a running state.
- Application runtime: the process starts and then exits, crashes, or listens on the wrong interface.
- Networking: ports, DNS, routes, or container-to-container connections fail.
- Storage and permissions: a mount is missing, read-only, denied, or hides files from the image.
- Host integration: Docker Desktop file sharing, WSL2 integration, line endings, or operating-system security blocks an otherwise healthy engine.
Record the exact command and complete error before trying a fix. A one-line shell error often omits the first useful diagnostic detail.

2. Check whether the Docker daemon is reachable
Run the operating-system-independent test
Execute:
docker info
A successful response displays both client and server information, including the engine version, storage driver, runtimes, images, and containers. It is a reachability test, not merely a version check. If the command reports that it cannot connect to the daemon, do not troubleshoot a container yet—the engine boundary has failed.
Check the client context and environment
The CLI can be pointed at a different engine through a Docker context or the DOCKER_HOST environment variable. Inspect the active context with:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →docker context show
docker context ls
echo "$DOCKER_HOST"
On Windows PowerShell, use $env:DOCKER_HOST. An unexpected remote context or stale socket variable can make a healthy local engine appear offline. Select the intended context only after confirming which engine should receive your commands.
Inspect Linux daemon logs
On a systemd-based Linux host, view the service log with:
sudo journalctl -xu docker.service
On distributions without systemd, inspect the distribution’s syslog or messages facility. Look for the first startup error, such as an invalid daemon configuration, unavailable storage path, permission failure, or a socket already in use. Restarting repeatedly can overwrite useful context, so save the relevant entries first.
Inspect Docker Desktop logs
On macOS and Windows with WSL2, Docker Desktop runs the engine inside a managed virtual machine. Its VM service diagnostics are written to an init.log file and are available through Docker Desktop’s troubleshooting and diagnostics interface. If docker info fails while the Desktop application appears open, collect those diagnostics rather than assuming that a container is at fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse debug logging only temporarily
Daemon debug logging can expose a hidden handshake, storage, or network failure when normal logs are inconclusive. Enable it only for the reproduction window, capture the relevant entries, and return the daemon to its normal log level afterward. Persistent debug mode creates noisy logs and can obscure the event you need.
3. Separate image-build failures from runtime failures
A successful image build proves only that the Dockerfile instructions completed. It says nothing about whether the resulting command can start, bind a port, find a configuration file, or reach another service.

Read the first failing BuildKit step
Build output is ordered by dependency. Start at the first failed step, not the final cascade of errors. Verify these items in order:
- Build context: confirm that the files referenced by
COPYandADDare inside the directory sent to the build and are not excluded by.dockerignore. - Dockerfile path: make sure the selected file is the one you edited, especially when a project has multiple Dockerfiles.
- Base image: check the repository name and tag, and confirm that the tag exists for the target architecture.
- Package repositories: test DNS, proxy, certificates, and repository availability from the build environment.
- Architecture: verify whether the host, builder, and image target are the same CPU architecture or require an explicit platform.
Use a clean build as a diagnostic, not a reflex
Run:
docker build --no-cache -t example-image:debug .
If the clean build succeeds, a stale cache layer was involved. If it fails at the same instruction, the cause is deterministic—usually the context, Dockerfile, dependency source, or platform. Avoid using --no-cache for every build: it increases build time and removes useful reproducibility signals.
Check the build command and context explicitly
When a Dockerfile is not in the current directory, specify both arguments:
docker build -f path/to/Dockerfile -t example-image:debug path/to/context
The final argument is the context. A file outside that context cannot be copied into the image, even if it exists on the host.
4. Diagnose containers that exit immediately
Read status, exit code, and restart behavior
List all containers, including stopped ones:
docker ps -a
Then inspect the failing container:
docker inspect <container> --format '{{.State.Status}} {{.State.ExitCode}} {{.State.Error}} {{.HostConfig.RestartPolicy.Name}}'
An exit code of zero usually means the configured process completed normally; a nonzero code indicates an application or startup error. A restart policy can make a short-lived process appear to be repeatedly starting. Disable or inspect that policy while diagnosing so you can observe one failure clearly.
Verify the configured command
Inspect the image’s entrypoint and command:
docker image inspect <image> --format '{{json .Config.Entrypoint}} {{json .Config.Cmd}}'
A container stays running only while its primary process runs. An image intended for a long-lived service may exit because the entrypoint script was not copied, lacks execute permission, uses an invalid interpreter, or launches a foreground process incorrectly. Conversely, a one-shot migration or shell image may be behaving exactly as designed.
Recommended Free Tools
Run an interactive diagnostic shell
Override the command when the image contains a shell:
docker run --rm -it --entrypoint /bin/sh <image>
From inside, verify files, environment variables, user identity, DNS, and executable paths. If the image has Bash instead, use /bin/bash. This isolates image contents from the normal entrypoint and is safer than editing the production image to add troubleshooting commands.

5. Understand why docker logs is empty
docker logs <container> reads the process’s standard output and standard error streams. It does not automatically read application log files inside the container.
Check the process and logging driver
Run:
docker logs <container>
docker inspect <container> --format '{{.HostConfig.LogConfig.Type}}'
Empty output can mean the process wrote to files, exited before producing output, or the configured logging driver sends records to another destination. In the application configuration, direct logs to STDOUT and STDERR when you want Docker’s logging pipeline to collect them. If an external driver is configured, retrieve records from that driver’s destination instead of repeatedly rerunning docker logs.
Capture startup output without losing it
Follow output while starting a new container:
docker start -a <container>
The -a option attaches to the container’s streams during startup. Combine this with the exit code and entrypoint inspection; an empty stream by itself does not prove that the application is healthy or that logging is broken.
6. Fix “port is already allocated” and address-in-use errors
Find the owner of the host port
Publishing a port reserves a host-side socket. Identify the process or container that owns it before stopping anything:
docker ps --format 'table {{.ID}} {{.Names}} {{.Ports}}'
On Linux or macOS, tools such as lsof -i :HOST_PORT or ss -ltnp show the owning process. On Windows, use the platform’s network tools to map the listening port to a PID before terminating a process. A second container or a non-Docker service may be the owner.
Choose a safe resolution
- Stop and remove the old container only if it is no longer needed.
- Stop the host process only after confirming its role and restart impact.
- Publish the same container port on another host port, for example
-p 8081:80, when the original port must remain occupied.
The left side of HOST_PORT:CONTAINER_PORT is the host reservation; changing it does not require the application inside the container to listen on a different port.
Check the application’s bind address
A published port cannot help if the service listens only on the container’s loopback interface. Configure the application to bind to the container interface, commonly 0.0.0.0, and verify the actual listener inside the container. For container-to-container traffic, use the service name and the container port on a shared Docker network—not the host’s published port.
7. Troubleshoot container-to-container networking
Confirm network membership
docker network ls
docker network inspect <network>
Both containers must be attached to a common user-defined network for service-name DNS to work. In Compose, the service name is normally the DNS name. An IP address can change when a container is recreated, so hard-coding one is fragile.

Test DNS and reachability from the caller
Open a shell in the calling container and test name resolution and the destination port with the diagnostic tools available in that image. If the image has no shell or networking utilities, use a temporary diagnostic container on the same network. Distinguish DNS failure, refused connection, timeout, and application-level errors; each points to a different layer.
Check host forwarding and DNS conditions
Docker documents host-forwarding and DNS behaviors that can block connectivity, particularly with VPNs, corporate proxies, custom DNS servers, and virtualized Desktop networking. Verify proxy variables, firewall rules, and the Desktop network settings before changing application code. A container that can resolve a name but cannot connect is facing a route, firewall, listener, or port problem rather than a DNS problem.
8. Rootless Docker: ports, networks, and expectations
Rootless mode runs the daemon and containers without root privileges. That reduces host privilege exposure but changes available operations.
Privileged ports may be unavailable
Binding a port such as 80 can fail when the operating system’s unprivileged-port threshold is higher than 80. The simplest remedy is to publish a non-privileged host port, such as 8080:80. Lowering the threshold or adding the documented capability/sysctl configuration changes host security and should be approved and maintained as an operating-system setting, not applied casually to make one command work.
Network drivers affect performance and source addresses
Rootless network-driver choices can change throughput and whether the application sees the original client source IP. Treat a driver change as an architecture decision: measure the impact on traffic volume, observability, and access-control rules, then document the selected driver for every host that runs the workload.
Compare rootless and rootful behavior deliberately
| Concern | Rootful engine | Rootless engine |
|---|---|---|
| Host privilege | Daemon normally has elevated privileges. | Daemon and containers run as an unprivileged user. |
| Low host ports | Usually available when not reserved by another listener. | May be blocked by the unprivileged-port threshold. |
| Networking | Standard engine networking behavior. | Driver selection can affect throughput and source-IP visibility. |
| Diagnosis | Check daemon, firewall, and container configuration. | Also verify user-level service state, port policy, and rootless network driver. |
9. Fix bind-mount “file not found,” denied, or missing-file errors
Verify the host path first
Check that the source path exists, is the intended file or directory, and is spelled with the correct case. A typo can cause Docker to create an unexpected directory or produce a confusing mount error, depending on the platform and mount syntax.

On macOS and Windows Docker Desktop, a project outside an allowed shared location requires file-sharing permission for its containing drive or folder. Add the location in Docker Desktop’s file-sharing settings, then retry the mount. If the engine is healthy but every mount from one host location fails, this host-integration check is more relevant than rebuilding the image.
Understand file and directory masking
A bind mount replaces the target path in the container. Mounting a host file over a directory hides the directory’s original contents; mounting an empty directory hides files that were baked into the image at that path. Inspect the image without the mount, then inspect it again with the mount to identify what is being masked.
Best Value
Compare UID, GID, and mode bits
Inside the container, determine the process identity:
id
ls -ln /path/to/mount
Compare that UID/GID with ownership and permissions on the mounted path. A service running as a non-root user may be unable to read or write a host directory owned by a different identity. Correct the host ownership or permissions, select a compatible container user, or use a named volume when host ownership semantics are not required.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose bind mounts versus named volumes intentionally
| Storage method | Best fit | Common failure mode | Recovery consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bind mount | Live source code, configuration edited on the host, or files that must remain directly visible. | Host path, Desktop sharing, line endings, and UID/GID mismatches. | Back up or verify host files before recreating containers. |
| Named volume | Database or application data managed by Docker rather than edited directly on the host. | Wrong volume name or an empty volume attached where initialized data was expected. | Inspect and back up the volume before removal; deleting a container does not necessarily delete the volume. |
On Windows, shared-volume permission defaults may not provide the ownership behavior a Linux application expects. A named or otherwise non-host-mounted volume can avoid that mismatch for persistent service data.
10. Windows and WSL2-specific problems
Convert CRLF scripts to LF
Unix shell scripts copied from a Windows working tree can retain CRLF line endings. Linux interpreters may report syntax errors or an invalid interpreter path even though the script looks correct in an editor. Convert the file with:
dos2unix script.sh
Alternatively, configure the editor or repository attributes to save shell scripts with LF endings. Rebuild the image after conversion so the corrected file is copied into a new layer.
Check WSL2 and Desktop integration
When docker info succeeds but mounts, networking, or filesystem access fail, verify that the intended WSL2 distribution is enabled for Docker Desktop and that the project path is accessible from the environment where the CLI runs. A path visible in one Windows or WSL context may not map identically into the Desktop VM.
Diagnose Windows port conflicts
Use Windows network tools to identify the PID listening on the host port, map that PID to a service, and stop or reconfigure it only after checking its purpose. Do not kill an unknown process simply because Docker reports an address conflict.
Use Docker Desktop’s Troubleshoot area
Desktop’s Troubleshoot section provides engine restart, diagnostics, reset, and support-collection functions. Prefer collecting diagnostics and correcting file-sharing or integration settings before a destructive reset, because reset operations can remove local images, containers, or volumes depending on the option selected.
11. A repeatable end-to-end diagnostic sequence
Use this sequence when the symptom is unclear or several errors appear at once:
- Write down the exact command, image tag or digest, host operating system, Docker version, and whether the engine is rootful, rootless, or Docker Desktop.
- Run
docker info. If it fails, inspect the Linux service log or Docker Desktop diagnostics before examining containers. - Run
docker ps -aand record the container status, exit code, restart policy, published ports, and creation time. - Read
docker logs <container>, then verify the logging driver and whether the application writes to files. - Inspect the image entrypoint, command, environment, mounts, user, and network attachments with
docker inspect. - For a build failure, reproduce the first failing BuildKit step and verify context, Dockerfile, base image, package access, and architecture.
- For a port failure, identify the host PID or container that owns the port and choose whether to stop it or publish a different host port.
- For a network failure, confirm shared network membership, service-name DNS, bind address, destination port, proxy, firewall, and VPN conditions.
- For a mount failure, verify the host path, Desktop file-sharing permission, file-versus-directory target, and UID/GID access.
- On Windows, check CRLF line endings and WSL2/Desktop integration; in rootless mode, check low-port policy and network-driver behavior.
- After the fix, recreate only the affected object and retest. Avoid deleting all containers, images, and volumes until you know which object contains the evidence or data you need.
12. Fixes that can make diagnosis worse
- Blindly restarting everything: this can erase the timing and logs needed to identify the original failure.
- Using
--privilegedor running as root: it may hide a UID/GID or capability problem while creating a broader security exposure. - Deleting volumes to clear a startup error: this can destroy application data and does not repair a bad command, port, or permission setting.
- Disabling security controls permanently: lowering an unprivileged-port threshold or weakening host permissions should be a documented, risk-reviewed decision.
- Adding
--no-cacheto every build: it increases build time and masks whether caching is part of the reproducible failure. - Changing several layers at once: if the daemon, image, command, mount, and network all change together, you lose the ability to tell which change worked.
13. Collect a useful escalation bundle
Escalate when the daemon remains unresponsive, the same failure reproduces on a supported clean setup, or the evidence points to an engine, Desktop, or platform defect. Include:
