To customize a stream with overlays, choose the visual elements you need, create or select an overlay, and add it to your broadcasting software as a source. In OBS Studio, a StreamElements overlay is added as a Browser source using its overlay URL; Streamlabs offers image sources, plugin installation, and scene-collection import options. Size and position the overlay so it does not obscure important content.
What a stream overlay does
An overlay is a visual layer placed over your broadcast. It can contain items such as alerts, labels, goals, and chat. StreamElements describes its overlays as being composed in the Overlay Editor and rendered in broadcast software through a browser source (StreamElements support guide; StreamElements overlay documentation).

Decide what the audience needs to see before adding elements. A clean frame with a few useful details is often easier to follow than one crowded with labels and graphics. Keep gameplay, camera footage, or other central content visible.
Add a StreamElements overlay to OBS Studio
- Copy the overlay URL. Open the desired overlay in the StreamElements dashboard or editor and copy its URL. StreamElements documents this URL-based workflow for OBS Studio (StreamElements support guide).
- Add a Browser source. In OBS, select the scene you want to customize. In the Sources panel, select the add button, choose Browser, and create the source.
- Enter the URL. Paste the copied overlay URL into the Browser source properties.
- Set the dimensions. Set the browser-source width and height to match your stream canvas, or use smaller dimensions if you want a smaller overlay that you can reposition in OBS. StreamElements advises matching the stream resolution in the usual case, with a smaller size as an option when repositioning (StreamElements overlay documentation).
- Place and check it. Arrange the Browser source in the scene and preview the result. Confirm the visible elements are positioned where you want them and do not cover important content.
Choose a Streamlabs workflow
Streamlabs documents multiple ways to add overlays. Choose the route that matches where your overlay comes from and which broadcasting software you use; these options should not be treated as interchangeable for every overlay format.

Use Streamlabs Desktop
In Streamlabs Desktop, you can select an overlay from its library or add image files as sources in a scene. This is a practical route when you want to work with image assets directly in the scene (Streamlabs Support, “How to Add an Overlay to Your Stream,” February 6, 2026).
Install an overlay with the OBS plugin
Streamlabs also documents selecting and installing an overlay through its OBS plugin. Follow the current provider instructions for the particular overlay and software combination you use (Streamlabs Support).

Import a scene collection into OBS
If you use OBS without the plugin, Streamlabs documents importing a Streamlabs scene collection into OBS. A scene collection is a different workflow from adding a single image source or a browser-source URL, so check the provider’s instructions and inspect the imported scenes before using them live (Streamlabs Support).

- Choose the source format first. A URL-based overlay can be added as a Browser source in OBS; image assets can be added as image sources in Streamlabs Desktop. Plugin installation and scene-collection import are other documented Streamlabs routes.
- Match the overlay to the canvas. For a full-canvas overlay, use dimensions aligned with the stream resolution. For a smaller movable element, set a smaller browser-source size and position it in the scene.
- Include only useful elements. Alerts, labels, goals, and chat are examples of overlay content. Add only the items appropriate to your broadcast.
- Preview before going live. Check placement against the actual scene so graphics do not hide the main subject or important on-screen information.
The cited vendor documentation explains setup workflows; it does not establish that one provider is universally best or that overlays improve engagement or performance.

Or let it run in the cloud
Overlays customize the visuals inside broadcasting software; they do not keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running after your computer is off. For that separate need, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
