You can customize an iPhone Lock Screen with a different wallpaper, a styled clock, widgets, quick controls, photo effects, and Focus-linked screens. To begin, wake your iPhone, touch and hold the Lock Screen, then tap Add New Lock Screen Wallpaper or choose a saved screen and tap Customize. If the gallery does not appear, touch and hold again and enter your passcode.
Choose a wallpaper and decide how it fits your Home Screen
From the Lock Screen gallery, tap Add New Lock Screen Wallpaper. You can also start in Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper. Apple’s wallpaper guide lists personal photos, Photo Shuffle, and built-in choices such as Weather & Astronomy, Emoji, Color, and featured sets including Nature. If a category is not immediately visible, scroll down and tap Get beneath the option you want.

After choosing a wallpaper, select Set as Wallpaper Pair to use it on both the Lock Screen and Home Screen, or tap Customize Home Screen to give the Home Screen its own look. Its color, photo, or blur can be adjusted separately.

Rotate photos with Photo Shuffle
Photo Shuffle can use selected categories such as People, Nature, or Cities, a chosen album, or photos you pick individually. Set the rotation to On Tap, On Lock, Hourly, or Daily. This is useful if you want changing photos rather than a single static background.

Change the clock and adjust the photo
Tap the time to change its font or make it more transparent. Apple’s Lock Screen customization guide also describes dragging the clock’s lower-right corner to increase its height. The available styling depends on the wallpaper.
Depending on the image, you may be able to reposition or zoom the photo, apply color filters, choose a light or dark appearance, or use a layered Depth Effect. An eligible Live Photo can add motion. These options are not available for every wallpaper, so check the controls shown while customizing your chosen image.

Use a spatial wallpaper on supported iPhones
With iOS 26, iPhone 12 or later can turn certain photos into spatial wallpapers, creating a 3D effect on the Lock Screen. Not every image qualifies; Apple says eligible photos typically have good lighting, clear separation between subject and background, or landscape orientation. The spatial effect can appear even when the Lock Screen is set as part of a Wallpaper Pair.

While customizing a Lock Screen, tap its widget area or Add Widgets to add or change widgets. The available choices depend on the wallpaper. Widgets suit glanceable information; for a cleaner photo-first screen, use fewer or none. You can also swipe right from the Lock Screen to view widgets, some of which support simple actions such as completing a Reminders item or playing a Podcasts episode.

To change the bottom quick actions, remove an existing control, such as Flashlight, and add another supported control. This lets you keep frequently used actions close at hand without opening an app first.
Link a Lock Screen to a Focus or keep several screens
After setting up a Focus, you can link it to a Lock Screen from the wallpaper gallery. Apple gives Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, and Work as examples. A linked Lock Screen appears when its Focus is active, and switching to that Lock Screen also changes the associated Focus.

You can save multiple Lock Screens for different situations, then switch among them by touching and holding the Lock Screen and swiping. To remove one, open the gallery, swipe up on that screen, and delete it. Separate screens are useful when you want different wallpaper, widgets, or visual styles for different Focus modes.
Balance useful information with privacy and readability
The Lock Screen can show notifications, app widgets, media controls, and Live Activities. Apple’s examples include Maps directions, Apple TV sports scores, and delivery updates; Live Activities availability varies by app. If message or calendar details should not be visible while the phone is locked, set notification previews to When Unlocked or Never instead of Always. When choosing among setups, consider whether you prefer glanceable information or an uncluttered photo, a static image or scheduled Photo Shuffle, one general-purpose screen or Focus-linked screens, and a paired or separately styled Home Screen. Decorative effects can also compete with the visibility of the clock, notifications, and widgets, so choose the arrangement that keeps the information you need easy to read.
