To customize your iPhone Lock Screen, touch and hold the current screen, then tap Add New to create one or swipe to a saved screen and tap Customize to edit it. Choose a wallpaper, adjust the clock, add available widgets, and tap Done or Add. The exact options depend on your wallpaper, iOS version, and iPhone model.
Create or edit a Lock Screen
- Open the Lock Screen gallery. Touch and hold your iPhone’s current Lock Screen. If the gallery does not appear, touch and hold again and enter your passcode if prompted.
- Choose whether to start fresh or edit. Tap Add New for a new design. To edit a saved design, swipe to it in the gallery and tap Customize.
- Select a wallpaper. Pick a photo or another wallpaper option. Available appearance controls vary by wallpaper.
- Set the clock and widgets. Tap the time to change its font and appearance; the current iOS guide also documents adjusting clock height. Tap Add Widgets to choose from the available widget gallery.
- Save the design. Tap Done or Add. Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the selection on both Lock and Home Screens, or tap Customize Home Screen to design the Home Screen separately.
You can also start from Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper. Apple lists sources including Photos, Emoji, Color, and featured categories; scroll to see additional options if needed. See Apple’s wallpaper instructions.

What you can customize
Wallpaper and appearance
Choose a photo or another wallpaper style, then use any appearance controls offered for that selection. Some wallpapers provide light or dark appearance options, but the available controls are not identical across wallpaper types. Apple’s custom Lock Screen guide describes the wallpaper-dependent options.
Clock
Tap the time in the editor to change its font and appearance. Apple’s current iOS 26 guide also includes a clock-height adjustment. If you do not see that control, it may not be available in your iOS version or for your selected design.

Widgets
Tap Add Widgets and select from the items shown. Examples include temperature, air quality, battery level, and upcoming calendar events. What appears depends on the apps installed and the available options in the widget gallery. Apple says Lock Screen widgets require iOS 16 or later; its widget instructions explain the feature.
Home Screen pairing
When saving, choose Set as Wallpaper Pair for a coordinated Lock Screen and Home Screen, or customize the Home Screen separately. The Home Screen can therefore use a different design from the Lock Screen.

Save, switch, delete, or link Lock Screens to Focus
Switch between saved designs
Touch and hold the Lock Screen to open the gallery, swipe to the design you want, and tap it. Apple notes that you can create multiple Lock Screens and switch between them in its Lock Screen guide.
Delete a saved design
In the gallery, swipe up on the Lock Screen’s card and tap the trash control.

Connect a design to a Focus
In the gallery, tap Focus on the Lock Screen and select a Focus, such as Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, or Work. A linked screen appears when that Focus is active; switching to another linked screen also changes the Focus. Apple documents the relationship in its wallpaper guide.

Check version, model, and photo compatibility
- Lock Screen widgets: Require iOS 16 or later, according to Apple. Specific widgets also depend on installed apps and what the widget gallery offers.
- Spatial-scene wallpaper: Apple documents this feature for iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26. Only eligible photos work; Apple says suitable images typically have good lighting and clear separation between subject and background, or are landscape-oriented. See Apple’s wallpaper support article.
- Other controls: Wallpaper choice affects which appearance options are available. Apple’s current iOS 26 guide describes controls that may not be present on earlier software, so use the controls shown on your own device.
