To customize an Xbox controller, connect and power it on, open the Xbox Accessories app on an Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows 10/11 PC, then open the configuration options shown for that controller. Button mapping and profile controls vary by model: Xbox’s documented keyboard-key mapping steps apply to the Elite Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller, while the available sources do not establish a universal trigger-adjustment workflow or settings for every controller.
Before you start: check your controller and platform
Microsoft lists Xbox Accessories features such as button mapping and profile configuration for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11. The app does not expose identical options for every controller, so use the options shown for your connected model rather than assuming that every menu or advanced setting is available to all Xbox controllers. Keyboard-key mapping on Elite Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller
Xbox Wire documents keyboard-key assignment for the Elite Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller. Its walkthrough is to open Xbox Accessories, choose Configure, create or edit a profile, select a button (or an Adaptive Controller port), and assign the desired keyboard key to its primary or shift-mode use. The article describes choosing a button or port and remapping it to a keyboard key; it does not establish that this workflow is available on every standard Xbox controller. Button mapping on standard Xbox controllers
Xbox announced button remapping for standard Xbox Wireless Controllers in a 2015 console rollout. That historical announcement confirms the feature for that rollout, but it does not establish current Windows support or identical options across controller models. Check the app’s current configuration screen for your controller rather than relying on the old announcement as proof of platform parity. The original announcement is at Xbox Wire.
Set up and switch profiles
Profiles let you keep different configurations where your controller supports them. For the Elite Series 2, Xbox states that the controller stores up to three custom profiles and one default profile; use its physical Profile button to switch between them. For other models, create or edit a profile only if the app presents that option. Xbox’s September 2022 update announcement describes controller-profile features in the context of that update; it should not be read as a guarantee that all controllers have the same profile controls or storage.

Understand trigger settings versus physical trigger locks
Do not confuse an in-app trigger setting with the Elite Series 2’s physical hair trigger locks. Xbox describes the shorter hair-trigger locks as hardware on that controller; they are adjusted on the controller, not by changing a software threshold in the app. The official material cited here does not establish current in-app trigger dead-zone values or a complete trigger-adjustment sequence for every model. If the app shows trigger options for your controller, follow its displayed controls; do not assume those options or numeric ranges are universal.
