How do I change the WordPress editor canvas color without changing my website?
There is no universal editor-only setting established by the cited WordPress documentation for recoloring every part of the modern block editor canvas across themes and versions. The documented editor stylesheet hook lets a theme load CSS into the editor, but that does not guarantee that a particular selector will change every canvas region or leave the published site untouched. Test the target installation and the exact surface you intend to recolor.

Set a theme-wide default with theme.json
For a block theme, a developer can set a default background color in the top-level styles object of theme.json:

Do not confuse the setting that enables a control with the style that supplies its value. In the color settings reference, settings.color.background controls whether background-color options are available to users; styles.color.background sets an actual background color. The Theme Handbook’s example discusses theme.json v2 and describes background, link, and text controls as enabled by default in that example; it is not evidence that v2 is the latest format.
Keep the color readable and the palette understandable
- Preview the color with real text and content, not just an empty block or editor swatch.
- Pay attention to the editor’s readability warnings when choosing a block background.
- When defining a theme palette, give colors meaningful human-readable names. WordPress says names appear in tooltips and can help people using screen readers or who have difficulty perceiving color; the slug is used to generate editor palette classes. See the color settings reference.
