Open Start > Settings > Personalization > Lock screen to choose a background, adjust its behavior, and manage the widgets shown at a glance. Windows 11 offers Windows Spotlight, Picture, and Slideshow backgrounds; its lock-screen information is managed through Widgets, not the detailed- and quick-status app controls documented for Windows 10.
Choose a lock-screen background
In Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, open the menu under Personalize your lock screen and choose the background style that suits you.

| Option | What appears | Control over images |
|---|---|---|
| Windows spotlight | A rotating set of Microsoft images, with tips, tricks, and notifications described by Microsoft. | Microsoft supplies the rotating content. |
| Picture | One still image. | Choose a built-in image or browse for a picture stored on your device. |
| Slideshow | A sequence of images. | Select one or more folders on your device and adjust the slideshow settings. |
These choices and controls are documented in Microsoft’s Windows lock-screen instructions. Exact labels can vary by Windows build.
Adjust lock-screen background behavior
The same Lock screen settings page includes separate switches for background effects and the sign-in screen:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Turn Get Fun Facts, Tips, Tricks, and More on Your Lock Screen on or off to control the additional Microsoft content described by that setting.
- Toggle Make the lock screen image react when I move my PC to enable or disable the image movement effect.
- Toggle Show the lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen if you want that image displayed on the sign-in screen as well.
Show, arrange, or remove lock-screen widgets
Under Widgets on the Lock screen settings page, you can decide whether widgets appear and manage the available ones:
- Turn Widgets off to hide them from the lock screen, or leave it on to show supported widgets.
- Drag widgets in the list to change their order.
- Use a widget’s more-options menu to remove it or customize it, where its provider offers those controls.
- Select Add widget to browse the available small widgets.
Microsoft says that “only widgets that support a small size can be added to the lock screen.” Availability and customization therefore depend on each widget and its provider. The broader Windows Widgets board can be opened from the taskbar or with Windows key + W; it can show content such as weather, news, stocks, and photos, but that does not mean every board card can be added to the lock screen. See Microsoft’s overview of Widgets in Windows.

Know which status controls apply to Windows 11
Microsoft’s lock-screen support page covers both Windows 11 and Windows 10, but the instructions differ. Its Windows 10 section describes choosing one app for detailed status and other apps for quick status. Do not follow those legacy app-status steps to manage Windows 11: the Windows 11 section describes lock-screen Widgets instead. If the names or layout differ on your PC, check the instructions against your installed Windows build.

How location can affect widget content
Microsoft says lock-screen widget content may be tailored using estimated location. When Windows Location services are enabled, they may provide that estimate; otherwise, Windows may use the internet connection’s IP address. This describes a possible source of location estimation, not a guarantee that every widget always uses location.
