Press Windows + R, enter shell:sendto, and press Enter. The folder that opens controls the Send to submenu for the signed-in Windows user: add shortcuts to create destinations, rename shortcuts to change labels, or remove shortcuts to delete entries.
What the Send to menu does
In Windows 10’s classic File Explorer menu, right-click a selected file or folder and choose Send to to pass it to a destination. A folder destination normally receives a copy; an application receives the selected path as a command-line argument. It is not automatically a move operation.
- Folders on the same or another local drive
- USB or external drives
- Network shares
- Desktop shortcut creation
- Applications that accept file paths
- Built-in handlers such as Compressed (zipped) Folder or Mail Recipient, where available
Application behavior varies, especially when several files are selected. Some programs open all files, some only one, and some ignore the selection.
Open the per-user SendTo folder
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
shell:sendto. - Press Enter.
You can also type shell:sendto in File Explorer’s address bar. The equivalent path is C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsSendTo. Because AppData is normally hidden, the shell command is less error-prone. Microsoft documents this shortcut-based design at Raymond Chen’s explanation of Send to, and Microsoft Q&A maps the command to the user folder at this SendTo path guide.

Changes in %APPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsSendTo affect only the current user. They do not automatically configure other Windows accounts.
Add a folder, drive, USB device, or network location
Add a folder
- Open the target folder in File Explorer.
- Right-click it and choose Create shortcut. If Windows places the shortcut in the current folder or on the Desktop, that is fine.
- Copy or drag the shortcut into
shell:sendto. - Right-click a test file, choose Send to, and select the new entry.
Example targets include D:Projects, E:Backup, \ServerShared, and C:Users<username>Documents. Copy an existing shortcut rather than moving the only copy if you still use it elsewhere. Microsoft Q&A shows the drive-shortcut method at this Send to list answer.
Add a local or USB drive
From This PC, right-click the drive, choose Create shortcut, confirm Desktop creation if prompted, and copy the resulting shortcut into the SendTo folder. A USB shortcut tied to E: can stop working if Windows later assigns the device F:; a stable folder or a reassigned drive letter is safer.

Add a network share
Create a shortcut to the UNC path, such as \ServerShare. It will fail when the share is offline or your account lacks write permission. A credentials prompt can be normal for a protected share.
Rename the entry
Rename the shortcut file in SendTo to a short, unique label, for example Projects, Photos, or VLC. The shortcut filename generally supplies the submenu label. Avoid duplicate names, and do not rely on drag-and-drop to provide a permanent custom order.
Add an application
- Locate the application’s
.exeor an existing shortcut. - Create a shortcut if necessary.
- Copy the shortcut into
%APPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsSendTo. - Rename it to a clear label, such as
NotepadorVLC. - Test it with a file type the program supports.
Copy the shortcut instead of modifying protected folders such as C:Program Files. The program must accept a file path supplied on its command line; some sandboxed, launcher-based, or specially configured apps may open without loading the file. The shortcut mechanism and command-line use are described by Microsoft at Raymond Chen’s Send to article.

The “peel-and-stick-all-at-once” method only works for thin decals, not for stickers like ours.

Use a command-line option
For an advanced shortcut, set the target to something like "C:PathToTool.exe" --input. Windows appends the selected file path when the shortcut runs. Quote paths containing spaces, check the program’s own documentation for argument order, and test with a noncritical file. The shortcut’s Start in value can matter to tools that use relative paths.
Remove or rename entries safely
- Open
shell:sendto. - Select the unwanted shortcut.
- Press Delete, or move it to a temporary backup folder if you may want it later.
- Reopen the context menu and check Send to.
Remove only the corresponding item from your user’s SendTo folder. Do not delete files from the Windows installation directory.

If the item is missing, open shell:sendto and look for the Desktop shortcut or special .DeskLink item. As a recovery step, check C:UsersDefaultAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsSendTo and copy the relevant item into your current user’s SendTo folder if it exists. Microsoft Q&A describes this approach at this recovery discussion; it is not guaranteed because the Default profile may also lack the item.
Do not confuse this with sending a file into the Desktop folder. Desktop (create shortcut) creates a link pointing to the original item; an ordinary Desktop-folder destination copies the item itself.

The menu does not show a new item
- Confirm you used the intended Windows profile and placed the shortcut in its
shell:sendtofolder. - Make sure it is a valid shortcut, not merely an unrelated file or copied executable.
- Close and reopen File Explorer, then sign out and back in if necessary.
An entry appears but does nothing
- Open
shell:sendto. - Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties.
- Check Target and Start in.
- Confirm the target still exists, then replace the shortcut if it does not.
The SendTo folder is missing or inaccessible
Try shell:sendto first, then the full %APPDATA% path. Check that MicrosoftWindowsSendTo exists in the current profile. An older Microsoft Q&A answer suggests creating it with mkdir %USERPROFILE%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsSendTo (older directory guidance), but back up the profile and verify the path before doing so. If the profile itself appears damaged, testing a new local profile is safer than editing the Registry.

Special destinations fail
- A removable drive may be disconnected or have a different drive letter.
- A network share may be offline or deny write access.
- An application may not support file arguments or multiple selections.
- Mail Recipient depends on Windows mail integration and file associations; installing another mail client does not guarantee that entry will use it.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s normal free Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The SendTo procedure remains applicable to installed Windows 10 systems, but an upgrade or Microsoft’s current support options should be considered for ongoing security updates.
