NVIDIA’s 2025 Hot Chips presentation showed how co-packaged silicon photonics could connect future AI switches at much higher bandwidth with shorter electrical paths and lower optical-I/O power. The demonstration covered a reported 1.6T optical chip, micro-ring modulators, detachable fiber connectors and a roughly 102T Spectrum-6-class switch. By August 2026, NVIDIA says Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics is in production for the Vera Rubin platform, although broad standalone availability, pricing and detailed service specifications remain unclear.
What the original ServeTheHome report covered
Patrick Kennedy’s ServeTheHome Networking report was published on August 26, 2025, as live coverage from Hot Chips 2025. It explicitly warned that the notes were written live and contained typos. The article is presentation coverage, not an independent benchmark or product review: it provides no reproducible test method, teardown, independent power measurements, pricing analysis or general production-availability assessment. The original report is available at ServeTheHome.

Its significance is architectural. NVIDIA was showing a path beyond a conventional switch ASIC connected to front-panel pluggable optical transceivers: put optical engines next to the switch silicon, then use an AI-oriented networking stack to connect GPU systems within and between facilities.
Scale-up, scale-out and scale-across
Scale-up
Scale-up is communication inside a tightly integrated system or rack, such as GPU-to-GPU traffic carried by NVLink.

Scale-out
Scale-out connects servers, racks or GPU systems inside a data-center fabric. Spectrum-X is NVIDIA’s Ethernet architecture for this class of AI networking, combining switches, telemetry, congestion control and software rather than treating the switch ASIC as the whole product.
Scale-across
Scale-across extends AI computing between sites. NVIDIA describes Spectrum-XGS as the distance-aware extension of Spectrum-X, intended for fabrics spanning multiple AI data centers. The presentation discussed this mode beginning at approximately 500 meters; that is a presentation rule of thumb, not a universal product distance limit.
At multi-site distances, a fabric must account for propagation delay, changing round-trip time, congestion, routing asymmetry, packet reordering, failure domains, job placement, checkpoint traffic and synchronization sensitivity. Spectrum-XGS is therefore not simply a longer Ethernet cable.

Co-packaged optics explained
Conventional pluggable optics
A conventional high-speed switch contains a switch ASIC, electrical traces on the package and circuit board, front-panel cages and pluggable optical transceivers. Optical engines, lasers, modulators, photodetectors and often DSP circuitry sit in or alongside those replaceable modules. The electrical path from the ASIC to the front panel becomes increasingly difficult to drive as signaling rates rise.
Co-packaged optics
Co-packaged optics (CPO) places optical engines adjacent to, or within the same package ecosystem as, the switch ASIC. Fiber still exits through an external connector, but the highest-speed electrical connection is much shorter. NVIDIA says its design integrates silicon photonics with the ASIC, removes DSP retimers from the optical path, reduces network power and simplifies the bill of materials. Those are NVIDIA claims, not independent measurements.
Silicon photonics does not eliminate every replaceable optical component. ServeTheHome reported a demonstrated design with a pluggable laser and detachable fiber connectors. CPO changes which optical functions are integrated and which remain serviceable; it does not mean that all lasers or fibers are permanently sealed into the switch.
What is inside the optical path?
- Switch ASIC: performs packet forwarding and presents very high-speed electrical I/O.
- CPO substrate and package: places the optical engine close to the ASIC.
- Silicon-photonics engine: integrates optical modulation and detection functions using semiconductor manufacturing techniques.
- Micro-ring modulators: encode electrical data onto optical carriers in the demonstrated design.
- Laser source: supplies light; the Hot Chips design included a pluggable laser.
- Fiber coupling and connector: carry the optical signal to detachable external fiber.
- Monitoring and cooling: manage optical health and heat near a high-power switch ASIC.
What NVIDIA showed at Hot Chips 2025
- A reported 1.6T co-packaged-optics chip.
- New micro-ring modulators.
- Detachable fiber connectors and different connector arrangements for Spectrum-X and Quantum-X.
- A silicon-photonics switch described as “102T” or Spectrum-6-class. The report does not establish a formal model number or whether the figure means 102.4Tb/s aggregate capacity.
- Photonics implementations for both Spectrum-X Ethernet and Quantum-X InfiniBand.
The event demonstration was evidence of working hardware, not proof that every configuration was orderable or ready for broad deployment.

| Technology | Networking role | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Quantum-X InfiniBand Photonics | Scale-up and scale-out for InfiniBand AI and HPC fabrics | NVIDIA lists the Quantum-X800 Q3450-LD with 144 800Gb/s InfiniBand ports; it uses liquid cooling and can connect more than 10,000 GPUs in a two-level fat-tree topology, depending on configuration. |
| Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics | AI-oriented Ethernet scale-out | NVIDIA lists up to 409.6Tb/s of bandwidth and 200Gb/s SerDes for the photonics platform. |
| Spectrum-XGS | Distance-aware scale-across between AI data centers | NVIDIA describes a multi-site architecture and algorithms; the reviewed sources do not fully disclose its protocol, software release, supported distances or interoperability matrix. |
CPO is the physical optical-I/O implementation. Spectrum-X’s congestion control, telemetry, job isolation and application behavior are broader hardware-and-software features. Installing CPO alone does not create Spectrum-X or Spectrum-XGS.
Why NVIDIA is pursuing silicon photonics
At extreme switch bandwidths, optical modules, DSPs, electrical reach, signal integrity, front-panel density and cooling all consume significant power and engineering margin. Moving optical conversion close to the ASIC can reduce the electrical distance and potentially lower I/O energy while freeing front-panel and thermal headroom.

NVIDIA’s current materials claim five-times better power efficiency versus traditional transceivers, five-times longer sustained AI application runtime and 1.3-times faster deployment or time to insight. The comparisons are vendor claims; “5× power efficiency” should not be read as a five-times reduction in total switch or data-center power. The stated baseline, measurement boundary and workload are not fully specified in the cited materials.
Thermal challenges remain. NVIDIA’s Quantum-X800 photonics switch uses liquid cooling, showing that CPO moves heat and packaging constraints rather than making them disappear.

What Spectrum-X adds beyond ordinary Ethernet
NVIDIA positions Spectrum-X as an end-to-end AI Ethernet platform. Its stated goals include low-jitter communication, congestion control, isolation between concurrent jobs, higher NCCL performance and better mixture-of-experts dispatch. NVIDIA’s webinar describes telemetry-driven congestion control intended to limit packet loss and jitter in AI fabrics.
These results depend on the complete stack: switch hardware, network operating software, telemetry, host configuration, topology and AI libraries. A CPO optical engine does not automatically provide the scheduling or congestion behavior associated with Spectrum-X.
What Spectrum-XGS means in practice
Training across facilities is harder than extending a local fabric. Distance adds propagation delay and variable round-trip time; shared metro or wide-area links introduce congestion and failures; storage, checkpoint and control traffic compete with synchronization traffic. Spectrum-XGS is presented as a way to make those conditions visible to the networking and placement algorithms.
The reviewed sources do not establish the exact Spectrum-XGS control plane, software versions, NCCL or CUDA requirements, supported fiber services, or interoperability with non-NVIDIA switches. Buyers should treat it as a coordinated NVIDIA architecture, not as a published long-distance Ethernet standard.

ServeTheHome reported that NVIDIA presented a 1.9× scale-out-performance improvement in a Spectrum-XGS comparison. The article does not identify the workload size, GPU count, baseline switch, link speed, topology, distance, software versions, trial count or statistical variation. The accurate interpretation is: NVIDIA presented a 1.9× improvement in that comparison. It is not evidence that Spectrum-XGS is universally 1.9× faster.
Independent results could change substantially with job size, topology, congestion, distance, software stack and placement policy.

NVIDIA’s August 2026 Vera Rubin announcement describes Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics as in production and claims five-times better power efficiency, five-times longer AI uptime and 1.3-times faster deployment than networks using traditional transceivers. NVIDIA names CoreWeave, Lambda and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure among ecosystem partners and adopters. “In production” indicates a manufacturing and platform ramp; it does not mean that any customer can immediately buy a standalone switch through ordinary retail channels.

NVIDIA’s product page says Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics offers up to 409.6Tb/s and is available in the second half of 2026. TrendForce reported on July 27, 2026 that next-generation Spectrum-X CPO switches had begun shipping to select partners, citing TSMC COUPE packaging and up to 400Tb/s of switching capacity. The secondary report is useful corroboration, but NVIDIA’s own documentation remains the primary product reference.

Trade-offs for infrastructure buyers
Serviceability
Pluggable optics can usually be replaced at the front panel. CPO integrates more optical functionality into the switch assembly, which may make a failure more centralized and replacement more expensive even if the design reduces component count.
Upgrade flexibility
With pluggables, operators can change reach, wavelength or speed independently. CPO ties those choices more closely to the switch ASIC and package generation.
Manufacturing and supply chain
TrendForce identifies optical-engine yield, silicon-photonics capacity and advanced packaging as potential bottlenecks. CPO shifts complexity from field-installed modules into factory assembly and packaging.
Vendor dependence
Spectrum-X combines hardware, software and AI-fabric behavior. That can improve coordinated optimization but may reduce interchangeability with generic Ethernet equipment.
Multi-site economics
Spectrum-XGS does not remove fiber-leasing costs, inter-site bandwidth charges, regional power and data-governance constraints, WAN failures, latency variation or storage-synchronization overhead.
Who should consider it?
- Hyperscalers and AI-cloud providers: highest relevance, especially for new-build GPU fabrics where optical power and density dominate.
- National AI infrastructure and large HPC centers: potentially strong fit if the organization can operate NVIDIA Ethernet or InfiniBand stacks and liquid-cooled equipment.
- System integrators and optical suppliers: strategically important because packaging, lasers, connectors and cooling become part of the platform.
- Conventional enterprise networks: low near-term relevance; pluggable Ethernet remains easier to source, replace and mix across vendors.
- Small and midsize businesses: generally not a practical purchase because these are quote-based data-center systems, not retail switches.
Questions a procurement team should resolve
- Which formal switch model and port configuration are being quoted?
- What are the per-switch and per-port power figures, and what comparison baseline supports them?
- Which fibers, reaches, breakout modes and optical budgets are supported?
- Can the laser, connector or optical engine be replaced independently in the field?
- What is the warranty and failure-isolation procedure for a CPO assembly?
- Which network-OS, driver, DOCA, CUDA and NCCL versions are supported?
- Can non-NVIDIA switches participate in the same fabric, and with which features?
- What cooling, facility power and inter-site connectivity are required?
- Is the quote for a production platform, a select-partner shipment or a future availability window?
What remains undisclosed
The cited sources do not establish public pricing, exact Spectrum-X Photonics model numbers, detailed port breakouts, supported fiber types and distances, optical budgets, laser replacement procedures, mean time between failures, optical-engine failure isolation, warranty terms, a Spectrum-XGS software matrix, independent third-party benchmarks or complete interoperability details.
Those omissions matter because headline bandwidth is only one part of an AI-factory network decision. Service policy, cooling, software compatibility and supply assurance can determine the real deployment cost.
