To customize the Linux Mint login window, open the Login Window utility from the application menu, make your changes in its graphical controls, and authenticate as an administrator when prompted. The screen you see before signing in is not the desktop wallpaper or the Cinnamon lock screen. It is drawn by LightDM with the Slick Greeter, so the settings live in system configuration rather than in your personal desktop preferences. This guide covers the GUI route first, the documented file-based route second, and the version differences that determine which options you will actually see.
What controls the login screen
Linux Mint’s pre-login screen is produced by two components. LightDM is the display manager that starts the sign-in session, and Slick Greeter is the greeter that draws the interface you interact with. The Linux Mint Developer Guide describes the project’s configuration tool as the way to set up LightDM and Slick Greeter, and that tool is the Login Window utility. Because the greeter runs before anyone logs in, its settings apply to every user on the machine.
That separation explains most of the confusion readers run into. Changing your desktop wallpaper in Cinnamon does not change the login background, and a lock-screen change does not touch the greeter. If you are looking at a different sign-in screen altogether, your system may be using another display manager or greeter, and the steps below will not apply as written.
Before you start
- Confirm which Linux Mint release you run. Open the Linux Mint release notes page and compare your version with the recommended release listed there. At the time of checking, the release notes listed 22.3 as the recommended edition, and the 22 series is an LTS line based on Ubuntu 24.04 and supported until April 2029.
- Confirm that Slick Greeter is your greeter. If the Login Window utility opens and offers greeter options, it is managing Slick Greeter.
- Have an administrator password ready. Login Window changes system-wide login configuration, so it will ask for elevated privileges.
- Choose any login background image before you start, and check the file location against the rules in the section on login-screen wallpaper.
Change the login screen with Login Window
This is the recommended first step for any control the tool exposes. The menu category can vary by edition, so if you do not see it under the category you expect, search the application menu for Login Window.

- Open the application menu and search for Login Window. Launch it.
- Authenticate with your administrator password if the tool prompts you.
- Review the greeter options the window presents. Make one change at a time so you can tell which setting produced any unexpected result.
- Apply the changes using the window’s own save or apply control. Settings are written to the LightDM and Slick Greeter configuration, not to your user profile.
- Log out or restart, then check the sign-in screen. The change should appear before you enter a password. If it does not, see the recovery section below.
Exact tab and section names differ between releases and editions, so follow the labels you see on screen rather than a memorised path.
Settings that depend on your version
Not every feature is available on every release. The table below separates what the Slick Greeter reference documents from what Linux Mint’s own release pages attach to a specific version.

| Setting | Where it is documented | Version note |
|---|---|---|
| Login background, GTK theme, icon theme, font | Debian Trixie slick-greeter(8) manual | Documented as Slick Greeter keys. Whether your version’s Login Window exposes each one as a control is not stated by the reference. |
| Accessibility, user visibility, HiDPI, monitor options | Debian Trixie slick-greeter(8) manual | Documented as Slick Greeter keys. GUI exposure varies by release. |
| Multiple keyboard layouts on the login screen | Linux Mint 21.2 official feature page | Introduced as a Linux Mint 21.2 feature. Not confirmed as a Mint 22 control by the sources reviewed. |
| Login-box alignment | Linux Mint 21.3 official feature page | Introduced as a Linux Mint 21.3 feature. Not confirmed as a Mint 22 control by the sources reviewed. |
If you run Mint 21.x, the feature pages describe what that series added. If you run Mint 22.x, look for the same controls in your own Login Window before assuming they exist.
Edit the Slick Greeter configuration directly
When the GUI does not expose a setting you need, the advanced route is the file /etc/lightdm/slick-greeter.conf. The Debian Trixie slick-greeter(8) manual documents the file and its supported keys. Treat that manual as the reference for Slick Greeter syntax, not as a promise that every Mint release reads every key through its GUI.

Back up the file first
Before you edit anything, copy the current file so you can restore it. If the file does not exist yet, the greeter is running on built-in defaults and you can remove your new file to return to them.
- Open a terminal and run
sudo cp /etc/lightdm/slick-greeter.conf /etc/lightdm/slick-greeter.conf.bak. - Confirm the copy exists with
ls -l /etc/lightdm/.
Make the change
Open the file with an editor running as administrator, for example sudo nano /etc/lightdm/slick-greeter.conf. Settings belong under the [Greeter] section. Keep the key names exactly as the manual spells them, because the greeter ignores misspelled keys without warning. Change one key, save, and test with a logout or restart before you change the next one.

Do not replace the greeter or edit seat configuration
Avoid swapping out the greeter package or editing LightDM service and seat configuration to achieve a visual change. Those files control the system-wide sign-in path. A mistake there can prevent every user from signing in, and it is far harder to recover from than a bad background setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rules for a login-screen wallpaper
A login background is read by the greeter before any user has signed in. The greeter cannot read a file that only exists in an encrypted or otherwise inaccessible home directory, so an image stored there may simply not appear at the sign-in screen. Put the image in a location the system can read, such as a directory under /usr/share/, and set its permissions so the greeter account can open it.

The login background is a separate setting from your desktop wallpaper and from your lock-screen image. Changing one does not change the others, so set each one where it belongs.
Dual-monitor placement
If the greeter appears on the wrong screen, start with the monitor option documented in the Slick Greeter reference, and set it through Login Window if your release exposes it. Display-layout scripts that try to move the greeter are specific to individual systems, and no primary source reviewed for this guide establishes a general recipe, so avoid copying one without understanding what it changes.
Recovering from a bad change
- If the sign-in screen still loads, return to Login Window and reverse the change you made last.
- If the sign-in screen fails to load, switch to a text console (commonly Ctrl+Alt+F3 on Linux Mint) and log in with your account.
- Restore the backup you made with
sudo cp /etc/lightdm/slick-greeter.conf.bak /etc/lightdm/slick-greeter.conf, then restart the display manager or the machine. - If you never created a backup, delete the file you edited so the greeter returns to its defaults.
The official Linux Mint User Guide notes that Login Window can restore LightDM settings. That passage appears in older upgrade notes, so use it as a fallback option rather than a step-by-step recovery procedure.
