You can change WooCommerce’s Add to Cart button in three dependable ways: use PHP filters for label changes in classic themes, edit the Add to Cart + Options block in a block theme, and use documented block styles or scoped CSS for appearance. Keep PHP in a child theme or code-snippet plugin, not a parent theme, and test simple, variable, out-of-stock, keyboard, and mobile states before publishing.

Choose the right customization method
Your active theme and the kind of change you want determine the safest method. Classic themes render button markup through PHP templates and expose separate filters for product pages and catalog loops. Block themes assemble those areas in the Site Editor, where the Add to Cart + Options block controls the button and related purchase controls.

Do not assume a label change affects every button. A single-product button and a button in a product archive are generated in different contexts, so they have different filters in a classic installation.
Change button text in a classic theme
Classic WooCommerce themes use PHP hooks for the two most common label changes. Add the code in a child theme’s functions.php file or in a code-snippet plugin. WooCommerce warns that code added directly to a parent theme’s functions.php can be wiped out when that theme is updated.

Change the single-product button
The woocommerce_product_single_add_to_cart_text filter controls the label on an individual product page.

} );After saving, clear any page or object cache and open a product page in a private browser window. The new wording should appear on the button rendered beside that product’s purchase controls.
Change shop and archive buttons
Use woocommerce_product_add_to_cart_text for buttons shown in shop, category, tag, and other product-loop views.

Use wording that matches the action
“Buy now” can imply an immediate checkout even when the button only adds an item to the cart. Choose text that describes the actual next step, especially when customers must select options first. Keep the translated string inside __() so the text remains compatible with WooCommerce’s translation system.

Customize a block theme without editing template files
Block themes use the WordPress Site Editor rather than requiring direct edits to PHP templates. The active theme must be a block theme, and its Single Product template must contain the WooCommerce Add to Cart + Options (Beta) block.

- Open Templates and select Single Product. If your theme uses a different product template name, open the template assigned to individual products.
- Select the Add to Cart + Options block. If it is missing, insert that block in the purchase-controls area of the template.
- Use the block settings to adjust the button and, where supported, the quantity and variation controls.
- Save the template. Preview a simple product and a variable product before leaving the editor.
The block combines the button with quantity controls and variation controls for supported products. That means a visual change made to this block can affect more than the button itself, so check alignment and spacing around selectors, quantity fields, and notices.
To change the layout used by shop and catalog pages, open the relevant catalog or product-archive template in the Site Editor and edit the product-grid or add-to-cart block used there. A change to the Single Product template will not automatically change archive buttons.
Change color, size, and states safely
Block themes: start with global styles
Use the Site Editor’s global Styles panel for colors, typography, spacing, and button appearance whenever the active block supports those controls. This keeps the design consistent and avoids depending on private markup that may change when WooCommerce Blocks changes.
When custom CSS is required for a WooCommerce block button, the documented component class is .wc-block-components-button. A basic example is:

}Place site-wide CSS in the theme’s supported global-style system when possible. If you use Additional CSS, keep a note of why the selector is needed so a future theme change can be reviewed.
Classic themes: inspect and scope the rendered markup
Classic themes do not all use identical HTML or class names. Inspect the button in your browser’s developer tools, identify the product context that contains it, and scope your selector to that context rather than styling every link or button on the site.

}Store this CSS in the child theme or the site’s Additional CSS area according to your maintenance workflow. Avoid broad rules such as button { ... }; they can unintentionally restyle quantity controls, checkout actions, or account forms.
Style every interaction state
A polished button needs more than a normal background color. Check normal, hover, focus, active, disabled, and loading or processing appearances where your theme provides them. Maintain readable contrast between text and background, and make keyboard focus obvious without relying only on a color change.

Keep single-product and shop buttons independent
Classic themes provide a clean separation:
woocommerce_product_single_add_to_cart_textchanges the label on single-product pages.woocommerce_product_add_to_cart_textchanges the label in product archives and shop loops.
Use separate filters when the customer’s intent differs by location—for example, a detailed product page can invite a purchase while a grid can invite viewing or shopping. For appearance, use the corresponding page context in CSS. In a block theme, edit the Single Product template for individual products and the catalog template for archive cards; the two templates can have different block settings and styles.

Account for product types and button states
Simple products
A simple product normally exposes an immediately usable add-to-cart control. Check that your replacement text fits the available width and does not push price, quantity, or notices out of alignment.
Variable products
A variable product may require customers to choose options before it can be added. The Add to Cart + Options block supplies variation controls for supported products, while classic templates may display selectors before enabling the button. Test the unselected state, a valid selection, and an invalid or incomplete selection. A label that suggests an immediate purchase can be confusing while the button is disabled pending a choice.
Out-of-stock and disabled states
View an out-of-stock product and a disabled button on both desktop and mobile. Confirm that your CSS does not make an unavailable control look active, and that the disabled state remains readable. If your store uses inventory or back-order notices, check that those messages remain visible after you change spacing or button dimensions.

Move or augment classic button areas with hooks
If the requirement is more than wording or styling—such as adding a message, trust note, or extra control near the button—use the actions and filters documented by your active classic theme. Storefront, for example, maintains a documented set of template hooks, with the complete hook list in its theme files and official repository.
First identify the template area that currently outputs the button, then attach your content to the appropriate action rather than copying and editing a WooCommerce template. This keeps your customization smaller and makes it easier to review after WooCommerce or theme updates. A copied template can also become stale when WooCommerce changes its markup or behavior.
Test the finished customization
Run this checklist in a staging site or during a controlled maintenance window:
- Open a simple product page and confirm the intended label, color, size, and spacing.
- Open a variable product before selecting options, after selecting valid options, and after clearing a selection.
- Check shop, category, and tag archives to confirm their buttons use the intended archive wording and layout.
- View an out-of-stock product and any disabled or processing state exposed by the theme.
- Navigate with a keyboard only. The focus indicator must remain visible and the button must be reachable in a logical order.
- Test narrow mobile widths and a larger desktop viewport. Look for wrapped labels, clipped text, horizontal scrolling, and crowded quantity controls.
- Test with your active language and translation files if you changed a string wrapped in
__(). - Clear page, browser, and optimization caches before deciding that a change failed to load.
Troubleshoot common failures
The text changed on one page but not another
Check which filter you used. The single-product and archive filters are separate. In a block theme, confirm that you edited the template actually assigned to the page; changing Single Product will not alter catalog cards.

Verify that the child theme is active, the snippet is enabled, and there is no PHP syntax error. If the site uses a block template for the relevant area, a classic-theme filter may not control the rendered block. Clear caches and test while logged out.
CSS works in the editor but not on the live page
Save the global styles or Additional CSS changes, purge optimization caches, and inspect the live element to confirm that your selector matches the rendered class. For block buttons, prefer .wc-block-components-button and supported style controls instead of selectors that depend on one block being nested inside another.
The CSS affects unrelated controls
Narrow the selector to the product or block context and remove broad element selectors. Recheck quantity fields, checkout buttons, account forms, and navigation controls after every change.
A theme update removed the customization
Move PHP out of the parent theme into a child theme or code-snippet plugin. Keep CSS in the child theme, Additional CSS, or the block theme’s global-style system. Record the purpose of each customization so it can be audited when the theme or WooCommerce changes.
Recommended maintenance approach
Use the smallest supported interface that solves the problem: a filter for a label, the Site Editor for a block-template change, global styles for design tokens, and a narrowly scoped stylesheet only when the interface does not expose the required control. Avoid selectors tied to private internal block markup, because those internals can change. Re-run the product-type, accessibility, responsive, and cache checks whenever you update WooCommerce, the theme, or a block extension.
