You can make X’s sports alerts more manageable by choosing a few accounts for post notifications, turning off push categories you do not need, and muting event-specific terms. These controls work at different levels, so use the one that matches the alert you want to stop. X’s Help Center instructions, accessed October 7, 2026, describe the current settings; labels and navigation may change between app versions.
Choose which sports accounts can send post alerts
Start with the teams, leagues, or reporters whose posts you genuinely want to see promptly. Post notifications are controlled on each account’s profile, separately from your general push settings.

- Open the profile of an account you follow.
- Tap its notification icon.
- Choose All posts for every post, or Only posts with live video if you only want that type of alert. Choose None to stop post alerts from that account.
X documents these profile-level options in its mobile notifications guidance. If one account is producing too many alerts, change its setting here rather than muting sports terms more broadly.
Turn off push notification categories you do not want
Account post alerts are only one source of notifications. X also lets you select broader push categories, which can include mentions, replies, likes, new followers, recommendations, news, Spaces, and other types. The available categories can vary by app version.

- Tap your profile icon.
- Go to Settings and privacy → Notifications → Preferences → Push notifications.
- Turn off categories you do not want sent as push alerts.
This adjusts push notifications by category; it is not a sports-only filter. See X’s About notifications on mobile devices page for its documented controls.
Mute event terms when you want to filter specific posts
If a term, hashtag, or phrase is filling your notifications or Home timeline, add it to Muted words. This is useful for a temporary event or spoiler phrase, but choose terms carefully: a broad term may also hide posts you would otherwise want to see.

- Open the Notifications area and its settings.
- Go to Muted → Muted words.
- Add the word, phrase, or hashtag.
- Choose whether the mute applies to Notifications, the Home timeline, or both; select whose posts to mute and set a duration.
X offers 24-hour, 7-day, 30-day, and Forever durations for muted words. A temporary duration is often a better fit for a time-limited event; revisit the setting when the event is over. X says muting is case-insensitive and that muting a word also covers its hashtag. Its advanced muting guide describes these controls.

There are two important limits: muted-word rules do not hide matching posts from search, and they do not stop opted-in post alerts from accounts you follow. If an account’s alerts still arrive despite a muted term, change that account’s profile notification setting instead.

If unwanted notifications continue, review X’s quality filter and advanced filters in the Notifications settings. They are general controls, not sports-aware rules:
- Quality filter: X describes this as filtering lower-quality notifications, such as duplicates or content that appears automated. X says it does not filter notifications from people you follow or have recently interacted with.
- Advanced filters: These let you filter notifications from selected types of accounts. They do not identify sports content as such.
Because these filters can affect notifications beyond sports, check their account-type settings before enabling them. X explains the Notifications timeline and its filters.

Understand what muting an account changes
Muting an account is different from unfollowing or blocking it. X says the muted account is not notified that you muted it, but how replies and mentions are handled depends in part on whether you follow that account. If you only want to stop its post alerts, use the profile notification icon and select None rather than applying an account mute. X’s account muting guide explains the distinction.

Recommendations are separate from alerts you explicitly enabled on a specific profile. X says recommendation notifications are personalized using signals such as accounts or Topics you follow, your preferences, and recent engagement. This is X’s description of its system, not an independently audited account of how each notification is selected. Turning off an account’s post alerts therefore may not stop all recommended notifications. - Use profile-level post alerts for a short list of high-value accounts.
- Turn off broad push categories you do not need.
- Use muted words for specific unwanted terms, choosing Notifications or Home timeline scope deliberately.
- After an event, revisit temporary mutes and account alerts and remove settings you no longer need.
