Start with LibreWolf’s built-in settings for everyday changes to the toolbar, tab strip, and New Tab page. Mozilla documents the corresponding controls in desktop Firefox, but the exact menus and features can vary in LibreWolf by version and platform. For preferences that should persist across profiles or installations, LibreWolf documents an advanced option: librewolf.overrides.cfg.
Rearrange toolbar buttons and manage toolbar visibility
Mozilla’s current desktop Firefox guide documents these steps; treat them as Firefox-family reference instructions and confirm the controls available in your LibreWolf build. Open the application menu and select More Tools > Customize toolbar…. Drag items to rearrange them or move them between the toolbar and overflow menu, then select Done. You can also right-click an empty part of the toolbar or tab strip to open customization. Some items, including the menu button, cannot be moved into the overflow menu. In the customization view, the title bar has its own visibility checkbox. The Bookmarks Toolbar is also separate from the tab strip: Firefox offers Always Show, Never Show, and Only Show on New Tab options for it. These controls may appear differently in LibreWolf.
Use Restore Defaults cautiously: Mozilla warns that restoring defaults can switch vertical tabs back to horizontal tabs and reset the theme, as well as undo other customization.

Change what appears on a new tab
Firefox’s New Tab page has a customization control, usually shown as a gear or pencil, for toggling page features. Additional content options—including sponsored shortcuts or stories and recent activity—are controlled through the Home and startup settings. Mozilla documents choosing Blank Page under New Windows and Tabs > New tabs to open an empty new tab. Shortcuts and page appearance
The documented Firefox interface lets users pin, dismiss, and rearrange shortcuts, and change how many shortcut rows appear. It also describes built-in wallpapers, custom colors, and using a local image as wallpaper. Mozilla says a selected wallpaper image stays on the device rather than being uploaded to Mozilla. These are Firefox-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every LibreWolf build exposes the same controls.
Can a new tab open a custom website?
The documented built-in controls establish content choices and a Blank Page option; they do not establish that LibreWolf’s built-in settings let you enter an arbitrary URL for new tabs. Do not assume that capability is available from the standard controls. Check your installed version’s settings before relying on a custom start page.

When to use LibreWolf’s overrides file
For routine, visible layout and page-content changes, begin with the interface. LibreWolf also documents changing settings through its Settings page and about:config, and using librewolf.overrides.cfg for preferences that should carry across profiles or installations. The project describes the file as a way to change defaults across multiple profiles and installations and to back up or port preferences. Its location depends on the operating system and installation method, including whether LibreWolf is installed through Flatpak, another Linux package, macOS, Windows, or the portable launcher. Follow the current LibreWolf settings documentation for the path that matches your installation; the file may need to be created.

The project guide notes that if a preference appears more than once, the last one applied takes effect. Treat overrides as an advanced preferences route, not a general substitute for toolbar customization: the documented guidance does not establish that arbitrary CSS snippets or unspecified about:config changes are supported for these tasks.
