To reduce battery use from your iPhone’s dimmed Lock Screen, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display. Turn off Always On Display to stop the screen staying visible while the phone is locked, or keep it on and switch off Show Wallpaper and/or Show Notifications to retain a simpler at-a-glance display. Apple does not publish a specific battery-savings percentage for these changes.
Choose how much of the Lock Screen to keep visible
On supported iPhone models, Always-On Display keeps a dimmed version of the Lock Screen visible while the phone is locked. Apple provides three controls in the same settings menu, so you can choose between disabling the feature and simplifying what it shows.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness, then Always On Display.
- Choose the setting that fits how you use your phone:
- Turn off Always On Display: The dimmed Lock Screen will no longer remain visible while the iPhone is locked.
- Keep Always On Display on, hide wallpaper: Turn off Show Wallpaper to remove the Lock Screen wallpaper from the always-on view.
- Keep Always On Display on, hide notifications: Turn off Show Notifications to remove notifications from that view.
You can switch off the wallpaper, notifications, or both independently. Apple documents these controls in its Always-On display guide.

When Always-On Display switches off automatically
You may not need to change the setting for the display to go dark in every situation. Apple says Always-On Display turns off automatically when the iPhone is face down or obstructed from view, is not near a paired Apple Watch, starts a CarPlay session, or is using Continuity Camera. It also switches off when Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is on, and at the user’s usual bedtime. These automatic conditions are separate from the Always On Display switch in Settings.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Use Low Power Mode to switch it off automatically
Low Power Mode disables Always-On Display as part of its broader effort to reduce power use. The Settings route depends on the iPhone generation:
- iPhone 15 and later: Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
Low Power Mode also reduces or disables other features to save power. It automatically turns off once the iPhone charges to 80% or higher. Apple lists the paths and behavior in its Low Power Mode support guide.

Adaptive Power is a separate option on compatible iPhones
Adaptive Power is not the Always-On Display setting. On supported iPhones, it can make adjustments intended to extend battery life, including slightly lowering screen brightness, limiting background activity, and adjusting performance. It can also turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%.

What to expect from the battery change
Turning off Always-On Display removes its persistent dimmed Lock Screen, while hiding wallpaper or notifications lets you keep the feature with less visible content. Apple’s cited support pages do not quantify how much battery any of these choices saves, so there is no supported percentage or number of extra hours to promise.
Always-On Display is available only on supported iPhone models. Apple’s cited guide does not enumerate every compatible model; if you do not see the setting, the feature may not be available on your iPhone. These settings require no accessory.
