The exact options can vary by device, language, and app version, so treat the settings below as a practical walkthrough—not a claim that a particular set of changes has been tested or eliminated a measured number of errors.
Open Gboard’s settings
- Open an app with a text field and bring up Gboard.
- Tap the feature menu, then More > Settings. Google documents this route for reaching setup options; the labels or menu placement can vary by device. See Google’s Gboard setup instructions.
Choose a language and keyboard layout
In Settings, open Languages, select a language, and choose one of the layouts available for it. This is useful if you need a different character arrangement or type in more than one language. Review the selected language as well as the layout: available choices are not necessarily identical across languages.

A reported example is the option to hide comma and period keys from the keyboard’s bottom row. Android Central reported that Gboard version 16.0 added these controls under Preferences; check your installed version rather than assuming the toggles appear on every device. Hiding punctuation keys may make the row feel less crowded, but it can add a step when you regularly type commas or periods. Android Central’s version 16.0 report describes the change.
Adjust suggestions and automatic correction
Open Text correction in Gboard settings and review the options shown on your device. Google groups suggestion controls there, including options for the kinds of suggestions displayed. You can decide whether you want predictive help, such as next-word or emoji suggestions, and whether automatic replacement suits your typing. The available toggles and their exact labels may differ by version.

Suggestions and autocorrect are related but not the same choice: suggestions offer text you can select, while automatic correction can replace what you typed. If you want help choosing but dislike unexpected replacements, look for separate controls and disable or adjust the automatic-correction option while retaining the suggestions you find useful. Google’s Gboard suggestions and corrections help page explains the available controls.
Teach Gboard a personal word
- Type the unfamiliar word, such as a name or specialist term.
- Tap the word when Gboard marks it with a red underline.
- Choose Add to dictionary.
This gives Gboard a way to recognize a word that its usual suggestions may not handle well. It is a useful fix for recurring names or vocabulary, rather than a guarantee that every future correction will be right. Google documents this method on its word suggestions and mistakes page.

Undo a correction you did not want
If Gboard replaces a word incorrectly, tap Backspace to undo the automatic correction, as Google recommends. That is the quickest recovery when a mistake slips through; for a word that repeatedly causes trouble, add it to your dictionary as described above.

Know which features are available on your device
Google’s current help page says its suggestions feature is available on Pixel 4a and later for supported languages: English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The same page gives additional US-English limits for Proofread and Smart Compose. These are feature-availability qualifications from Google’s help documentation, not a guarantee that every setting appears on other devices or language configurations. Consult Google’s current feature guidance if an option is missing.

Optional: add a word shortcut
For faster entry of a long or frequently used term, Tom Pritchard’s June 28, 2026 walkthrough describes adding a word and optional shortcut through Settings > Dictionary > Personal Dictionary > language. At Gboard’s Android launch in 2016, Google Product Manager Reena Lee wrote that the keyboard was “assisted by machine learning to make typing faster and easier, including improved Glide Typing, predictions and autocorrections.” That is a historical description of the product’s approach, not a present-day measured error-reduction rate. No quantified rate of errors prevented is established by the cited sources.
