For toolbar colors and backgrounds, choose a theme; for a shorter toolbar, adjust window density. The steps below apply to Firefox desktop on Windows, macOS, and Linux, though menu options can look different on Linux depending on the desktop environment.
Show or hide the title bar and other toolbars
- Open the Firefox menu, select More Tools, then Customize toolbar. You can also right-click an empty part of the tab strip or toolbar and select the customization option.
- In the customization panel, check Title Bar at the lower left to show it; clear the checkbox to hide it.
- To change the Menu bar or Bookmarks toolbar, open the Toolbars dropdown and choose the visibility option you want. For the Bookmarks toolbar, the choices are Always Show, Never Show, and Only Show on New Tab.
- Select Done to finish.
If the Title Bar checkbox or Bookmarks toolbar choices are missing, leave full-screen mode by pressing F11, then check again. See Mozilla Support’s toolbar customization instructions.

Rearrange toolbar buttons
With the customization panel open, drag controls to reorder them or move them between the toolbar and the overflow menu. Select Done when the layout suits you. Some controls, including the menu button, cannot be moved into the overflow menu.
If you want to undo a layout change, choose Restore Defaults in customization mode. This also resets the default theme and changes vertical tabs back to horizontal tabs if vertical tabs were enabled, so use it only if those changes are acceptable.

Change toolbar colors or background
A theme changes Firefox’s visual treatment rather than the placement of controls. Mozilla Support explains: “A theme changes the appearance of Firefox, such as the color scheme and background image of the toolbars.” Menus and built-in pages follow the theme’s light or dark toolbar text treatment.
- Open a new tab or window.
- Select the customization button at the bottom right, then choose Appearance and Theme.
- Choose a theme. To manage community themes already installed, open the Firefox menu and select Extensions and themes.
Firefox’s Light, Dark, and System appearance choices affect its color scheme; System follows your operating system’s light or dark setting. For more control over tab and toolbar colors or a background, Mozilla points to the Firefox Color extension. Read Mozilla’s theme instructions for the built-in options.

Reduce toolbar height with compact density
The supported route depends on your Firefox version. Check your installed version before changing density; Mozilla’s compact-mode instructions distinguish Firefox 157 and later from Firefox 156 and earlier.

Should you use custom CSS or hidden preferences?
For most people, the built-in customization panel, Appearance settings, and themes cover the useful changes. Mozilla classifies about:config preferences and userChrome.css or userContent.css rules as advanced customization. It recommends these methods only for developers because they can cause unexpected behavior or break Firefox, and future updates may affect them.
