You can make Debian Installer answer many setup questions automatically by supplying a preseed file. To embed it directly in an installer ISO, extract the image, add the file to the installer initrd, regenerate checksums, and rebuild the bootable ISO. Cubic offers a graphical workflow for preseed and live-filesystem changes, but it is designed around customized Live ISOs; for a minimal, scriptable Debian Installer remaster, manual editing is often the more transparent route.

Choose where the preseed file should live

Debian supports three ways to provide a preseed file. The right one depends on when the installer needs the answers and whether the file should travel with the ISO.

Location How it works Trade-off
Installer initrd Embed the file in the installer’s initial RAM disk. Available early and suitable for a broad range of questions, but requires changing the initrd and rebuilding the ISO.
Boot media Put the file on the CD or USB, then pass a boot parameter such as preseed/file=/cdrom/preseed.cfg. Keeps the configuration with the media without modifying the initrd; the boot parameter and path must be correct.
Network URL Pass preseed/url= to fetch the file after networking is available. Lets you update the file separately from the ISO; installation depends on network availability and the URL being reachable.

Debian’s Installation Guide explains that preseeding supplies answers to installer questions ahead of time and can automate most of an installation. The file is not a shell script: although its syntax may look shell-like, it does not support shell variables or if tests.

Prepare a release-matched preseed file

Start from a sample for the same Debian release and installation method you plan to deploy. Debian warns that a file from a different release can leave questions unanswered, even when you expect an unattended installation. A preseed line has four whitespace-separated fields: owner, question identifier, type, and value. The owner for Debian Installer questions is commonly d-i.

To collect answers from an interactive installation, Debian documents debconf-get-selections --installer. Package selections can be collected with debconf-get-selections. Review the resulting file rather than assuming every captured answer is appropriate for unattended deployment.

Check the file’s syntax before building the image:

debconf-set-selections -c preseed.cfg

This checks syntax; it does not prove that every question identifier, value, or installation choice is correct for your target machines.

Manually remaster the ISO without Cubic

Manual remastering is a good fit when you want direct control over the installer image or need a repeatable process that can be scripted. Debian’s EditIso guidance describes extracting the ISO, modifying its contents, regenerating checksums, and rebuilding a bootable image.

1. Extract the original ISO

Download the Debian installer ISO for the release and architecture you intend to install. Keep the original unchanged so you can restart or compare the build. Debian lists bsdtar, xorriso, 7z, or mounting and copying the image as extraction options. For example, using xorriso:

mkdir isofiles
xorriso -osirrox on -indev debian.iso -extract / isofiles

2. Add the preseed file to the initrd

The following example uses the path shown in Debian’s Wiki instructions. It is an example, not a universal path: use the initrd location in the ISO you actually downloaded, which can differ by architecture and installer layout.

  • Portable Linux Solution: This 8 GB USB drive comes pre-loaded with the latest stable release of Debian Linux, providing a reliable and user-friendly operating system.
  • Hassle-Free Installation: Simply plug in the USB and boot from it to easily install or run Debian Linux without the need for CDs or complex setup.
  • Versatile Usage: Ideal for setting up new systems, exploring Linux for the first time, or carrying a portable Linux environment on the go.
  • Beginner-Friendly: Debian Linux offers a smooth learning curve, making it accessible for both beginners and professionals.
  • Compact Storage: The 8 GB capacity provides ample space to store files and documents alongside the pre-loaded operating system.
chmod +w -R isofiles/install.386/
gunzip isofiles/install.386/initrd.gz
echo preseed.cfg | cpio -H newc -o -A -F isofiles/install.386/initrd
gzip isofiles/install.386/initrd
chmod -w -R isofiles/install.386/

Run these commands from a working directory where preseed.cfg is present. The cpio command appends that file to the unpacked initrd. Confirm that the path and resulting initrd match the ISO’s actual contents before proceeding.

3. Regenerate the ISO checksums

After changing files, regenerate md5sum.txt from the extracted tree using Debian’s documented example:

cd isofiles
chmod +w md5sum.txt
find -follow -type f ! -name md5sum.txt -print0 | xargs -0 md5sum > md5sum.txt
chmod -w md5sum.txt
cd ..

The Debian instructions note that this process may print a symlink warning involving ./debian; that warning does not invalidate the generated checksum file.

Packing: The bootable USB drive comes in a colored PET/CPP zipper bag with instructions on how to get started. The box pictured is not included.

4. Rebuild the bootable image

Use an ISO authoring method that preserves the source image’s boot configuration. Debian’s example uses genisoimage for legacy BIOS and points to separate guidance for EFI, arm64, and other boot configurations. Do not assume a legacy BIOS rebuild command will preserve UEFI or hybrid-USB boot behavior. Keep the original boot catalog and required hybrid settings for the image you are remastering.

5. Test the installer entry that reads the embedded file

For the documented initrd-embedding method, boot using the text-based Install or Expert install menu entry. Debian’s Wiki warns that the graphical installer entries do not detect the embedded preseed file. Test the rebuilt image in a virtual machine before using it on physical systems, and verify that the expected questions are skipped.

Use Cubic for a guided graphical workflow

Cubic’s project documentation describes it as a GUI wizard for creating customized Live ISO images for Ubuntu- and Debian-based distributions. It includes an integrated command-line environment for changing the filesystem and provides dedicated Preseed and Boot tabs. This makes it useful when the image also needs package or live-filesystem customization.

  1. Start a new Cubic project using the Debian Live ISO you want to customize.
  2. Use the integrated terminal environment for package installation and filesystem changes.
  3. Open the Preseed tab to create, edit, or delete preseed files.
  4. Use the Boot tab to adjust boot parameters. Cubic’s options documentation says it updates boot files to match the selected kernel and initrd files.
  5. Generate the customized ISO, then test it in a virtual machine or on disposable hardware.

Cubic’s project documentation lists Ubuntu 18.04.5-based and Debian 11 Bullseye-and-newer hosts among supported bases, and says that many Debian versions can be customized. Check the project’s current compatibility guidance for the host and ISO you intend to use. A Cubic Live ISO workflow should not be assumed to behave exactly like manually remastering a Debian Installer netinst image.

Decide between manual remastering and Cubic

Consideration Manual remastering Cubic
Best fit Scripted builds, fleet provisioning, and installer-only changes. Desktop users who want filesystem customization alongside preseed and boot controls.
Control and visibility Direct access to extracted files, boot entries, checksums, and image-authoring steps. Guided project interface with an integrated terminal and configurable defaults.
Repeatability High when extraction, initrd editing, checksum generation, and rebuilding are scripted and versioned. Projects can be repeated, but the GUI state and host packages also affect the workflow.
Main risk Using the wrong architecture path or rebuilding without the source image’s required boot settings. Assuming Live ISO customization is interchangeable with a Debian Installer ISO remaster.

Troubleshoot prompts that still appear

  • Syntax check fails: inspect the four fields on each line and rerun debconf-set-selections -c preseed.cfg.
  • Some installer questions remain: check that the file matches the target Debian release and installation method, and that each question has the correct owner, template identifier, type, and value.
  • The embedded file is ignored: verify that it is present in the intended initrd and that you selected the text-based Install or Expert install entry.
  • The boot-media method does not find the file: confirm the path on the mounted media and the preseed/file= boot parameter.
  • The network method does not fetch the file: check that networking has been configured and that the URL passed through preseed/url= is reachable.
  • The rebuilt ISO behaves differently from the original: confirm that checksums were regenerated and that the rebuild retained the boot configuration needed for the target firmware and architecture.

For a Debian Live build, the Debian Live Manual recommends placing installer configuration at config/includes.installer/preseed.cfg. That path is specific to the Live build workflow; use the appropriate location and boot method for the image you are creating.
