The exact clicks depend on where you edit (web vs. mobile) and which Slides UI you see, but the underlying tools are the same.
This guide walks you through the most reliable approach (image masking), then gives a practical workaround if masking isn’t available. You’ll also learn how to adjust the crop, handle edge cases, and avoid blurry results.

Why Circle Crops Matter in Slides
Circle-cropped images improve visual consistency and help your slide content look intentional. Unlike “free-form” cropping, a circle mask stays neat even when you resize the image—useful when you’re building decks quickly and iterating layouts.

Circle masks are also presentation-friendly: they reduce distracting backgrounds and keep focus on faces, logos, or products.

What You Need Before You Start
- A Google account with access to the Slides file you want to edit.
- An image already inserted into the slide (JPG, PNG, or WebP typically work).
- Basic familiarity with selecting objects in Slides (clicking the image or shape).
If the image is embedded as part of a group (or coming from a template with locked layouts), you may need to ungroup or select the image layer before cropping or masking.
Method 1: Use Image Mask (Circle) in Google Slides
This is the most direct method. You apply a circular mask to an image, then reposition/zoom inside that circle without permanently destroying the original.
Google Slides on the Web (Chrome, Edge, Firefox)
Masking is typically available in the top toolbar once you select an image.
- Open your presentation in Google Slides.
- Click the slide containing your picture.
- Click the image once to select it.
- In the toolbar, click Mask (it may appear near Crop depending on your UI).
- Choose Circle from the mask options.
- Drag to reposition the image inside the circle.
- If needed, use the small handles to resize the masked image or adjust its placement.
Google Slides on iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS app)
Mobile UIs can be slightly different, but the idea is the same: select the image, then apply a mask shape.

- Open the Slides app and open your deck.
- Tap the slide with the image.
- Tap the image to select it.
- Tap the Paint roller / Format-style menu (the icon varies by app version) and look for Mask.
- Select Circle.
- Pinch-zoom or drag to reposition the image content inside the circle.
Google Slides on Android
On Android, masking usually lives under the image formatting controls.
- Open your Slides presentation in the Google Slides app.
- Tap the image on your slide.
- Open the formatting toolbar (often labeled Format).
- Find Mask.
- Choose Circle.
- Drag to move the image inside the mask and adjust the zoom as needed.
Method 2: Create a Circle Mask Using a Shape (Workaround)
If you can’t find the Mask option, you can build a circle “window” using a shape overlay. This approach is a reliable fallback, especially when your Slides UI doesn’t offer image masks.
At a high level: insert a circle, place it over the image, and use layering so only the portion under the circle is visible.

- Click the slide with your photo.
- Insert a circle: Insert → Shape → choose Circle.
- Click the circle and make it a solid fill (so it visually acts like a mask): in the toolbar, set Fill color to a neutral color (or none, depending on your workflow).
- Move the circle on top of the image.
- Select the image and adjust its position under the circle (drag it until the subject is centered in the circle).
Important: This workaround can look correct on-screen, but it’s not always a true non-destructive mask like the Mask → Circle tool. If you need a genuine export-ready circle crop, prefer Method 1.

Resize, Reposition, and Fix the Crop After Masking
Once the circle mask is applied, you usually need to fine-tune two things: the image’s position and the effective zoom level inside the circle.
- Reposition: click the masked image and drag the image content within the circle.
- Adjust size: use the selection handles around the masked image to scale it.
- Keep faces centered: align eyes roughly at the vertical center line of the circle, leaving a little forehead space.
If your circle mask isn’t selected, you might accidentally move the whole object rather than the image content. Click the masked image until you see the mask selection bounding box.
Common Issues and Troubleshooting
Mask option is missing or grayed out
That typically means your current object can’t be masked (common with grouped elements, certain imported objects, or UI variants).
- Try clicking the image itself (not a surrounding placeholder or frame).
- Check whether the image is grouped: right-click (web) → Ungroup if available.
- Refresh the page on web and ensure you’re on an updated browser version.
- If you’re on a mobile app version without mask support, use the circle shape overlay workaround.
The circle shows the wrong part of the image
That’s almost always a positioning issue. After applying the circle mask, click the masked image again and drag to reposition the content inside the circle.

- Zoom the image by resizing the masked object (handles), then reposition.
- For portraits, center the face first, then nudge horizontally so shoulders balance evenly.
The edges look jagged or pixelated
Jagged edges usually happen when the source image is low resolution or the image is stretched aggressively.
- Use a higher-resolution photo (for example, portraits around 1200×1200 or larger usually look clean).
- Avoid extreme upscaling—scale up gradually and replace the image if it still looks soft.
- If your image is very small, consider exporting it as a higher-quality JPG/PNG before inserting into Slides.
You can’t resize the masked image the way you expect
Sometimes resizing affects the container rather than the content, especially on mobile.
- On web, resize using the corner handles of the masked image selection.
- On mobile, confirm you’re manipulating the masked image (not the underlying image or overlapping shape).
- If your circle mask is locked by the template, switch to an editable layout or copy the slide to a blank layout.
Exported slides don’t match what you see
Exports (PDF, PNG, PPTX) can differ slightly depending on rendering.
- Try exporting as PDF and check the circle edges at 100% zoom.
- If edges change, increase source image quality and avoid heavy scaling.
- On web, test both File → Download → PDF document (.pdf) and PNG image if available for your use case.
Best Practices for Clean Circle Crops
- Use square images when possible: 1:1 photos reduce cropping surprises and keep faces centered.
- Keep consistent margins: leave a small buffer around the head so the crop doesn’t clip at different sizes.
- Standardize sizes: copy/paste one correctly masked image onto the other slides to maintain uniform circle scale.
- Prefer photos with clean backgrounds: masking doesn’t remove backgrounds—if you need background removal, use a PNG with transparency first.
Common Questions About Cropping Images Into Circles
Does Google Slides permanently crop the image into a circle?
With the Mask → Circle tool, it behaves like a mask (non-destructive). With shape overlay methods, you’re visually hiding parts rather than applying a true crop mask.
Best Value
Can I add a border around the circle?
Yes. For Method 1, you can often style the masked image or place a Circle shape outline on top as a border. For a clean look, use two layers: the masked image and a top circle with Fill: transparent and a chosen Border color.
What file types work best?
JPG and PNG are the most predictable. If you need transparency (like a logo with no background), PNG is ideal. WebP works in many cases, but if you see rendering issues, re-save as PNG.
Why does the circle look different after I resize the slide?
If the slide layout changes size, your image scaling can change too. Re-check each masked image and adjust its position so the subject stays centered.

Bottom Line
If you can see the Mask tool in Google Slides, use Mask → Circle for the cleanest, most controllable result. It’s fast, reversible, and keeps your layout consistent as you resize.
If masking isn’t available on your device or object type, use the circle shape workaround to achieve the visual effect—then test an export (PDF/PNG) to confirm edge quality.
