On a computer, select the picture, click Crop Image, drag the blue handles to frame it, then press Enter or click outside the image. To crop it into a shape, use the arrow beside Crop Image and choose a shape. Google calls this shape treatment masking.
Crop a picture on a computer

Open your presentation and select the picture.

Click Crop Image in the toolbar. Google describes cropping as a way to “trim the edges of an image or remove an unwanted section” in its computer guide to cropping and adjusting images.

Drag the blue handles along the image’s edge to change the visible framing. Drag inward to trim an edge; adjust the framing as needed to show a different portion of the picture.

Press Enter or click elsewhere on the slide to finish.

Crop an image into a shape
To show the picture inside a circle or another shape, select it, click the arrow beside Crop Image, and choose a shape. Drag the colored handles to refine which part of the picture is visible. This is a mask: it changes the image’s visible outline in the slide, rather than permanently changing the original image file.
Adjust a picture’s appearance
Select the image and open Format options to access the built-in appearance controls.

Recolor: Choose a color treatment under Recolor.

Opacity, brightness, and contrast: Adjust these under Adjustments.

Border: Choose a color using Border color.

Reset: Right-click the picture and choose Reset image to return it to the original photo inserted into the presentation.

Crop and edit on a phone or tablet

Open the presentation in the Slides app and tap the image.

Tap Crop Image, drag the border to frame the picture, then tap elsewhere on the slide.

To mask the image, tap Crop Image, then Mask Image, choose a shape, and adjust the border.

iPhone and iPad
Google documents crop and mask controls in the Slides app for iPhone and iPad. Its mobile guidance directs users to a computer for image color adjustments in Docs or Slides, and resetting images in Slides also requires a computer. Button placement and available controls can differ by device, so use the instructions and labels shown in your app.

For reframing, masking, borders, recoloring, and basic adjustments, use Slides’ built-in controls. Google also documents an optional prompt-based Edit image workflow in Slides: select an image, choose Edit image, enter a prompt, and preview the generated result before replacing the image or inserting the result. Access requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan, or access through Google Workspace Experiments; availability depends on the account.
