To create a website thumbnail with GrabzIt, send the page URL to its URL-to-image API, choose a browser viewport, then set the output width and height. The viewport controls how the page is rendered; output dimensions control the saved thumbnail size. Keep the output smaller than the viewport and use the same aspect ratio to avoid a squeezed or stretched preview.
How GrabzIt thumbnail sizing works
A thumbnail capture has two separate sizes:
- Browser width and height define the viewport in which the target page is rendered.
- Output width and height define the dimensions of the resulting image.
For example, a 1366 × 1170 browser viewport with a 320 × 240 output produces a smaller image from the rendered page. Those ratios differ, however, so use dimensions with matching ratios when you want to avoid distortion. GrabzIt’s thumbnail guidance recommends making the thumbnail smaller than the browser dimensions and preserving their ratio (thumbnail guidance).

REST API
Use REST when your application already makes server-side HTTP requests or you want to work directly with request parameters. GrabzIt’s documented endpoint accepts a URL and capture options (REST API reference). Keep the application key on your server: GrabzIt warns that using its REST API client-side exposes the key. For browser-initiated capture, use its JavaScript API and follow its authorized-domain setup instead.

If you prefer an SDK-style interface, GrabzIt documents libraries for ASP.NET, Java, JavaScript, Node.js, Perl, PHP, Python, and Ruby. The usual sequence is to request a URL-to-image capture and then call the library’s save method or otherwise receive the result (API documentation).

Browser-side JavaScript
Do not put a REST application key into front-end JavaScript. GrabzIt directs client-side integrations to its JavaScript API, which requires configuring authorized domains as described in its documentation (JavaScript API).
Create a thumbnail with the REST API
Here is the documented REST request shape. Replace the key and target URL, and URL-encode parameter values. This example uses JPG, a 1366 × 1170 rendering viewport, and a 320 × 240 output.
https://api.grabz.it/convert?key=YOUR_APPLICATION_KEY&format=jpg&bwidth=1366&bheight=1170&width=320&height=240&url=ENCODED_TARGET_URL
For a simple initial request, GrabzIt’s setup guide also describes using a direct GET request through cURL or Postman (API setup guide). For production, make the call from your server, handle the returned image or documented asynchronous callback, and keep credentials out of public code.

Set the capture and output dimensions
The REST reference lists browser defaults of 1366 pixels wide and 1170 pixels high, with a documented maximum of 10000 pixels for each browser dimension. These are API-reference values and may change; consult the live reference when setting limits. Output-height maximums depend on the package, so there is no single universal output ceiling established here.
If you provide output width but omit output height, the API documents proportional output height. If both output dimensions are absent or zero, output dimensions match the final image. For predictable thumbnail cards, specify both dimensions and preserve the viewport’s aspect ratio.
Select an image format
JPG is GrabzIt’s documented default. Supported image formats listed in its image documentation include JPG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, and TIFF. GrabzIt recommends PNG when JPG quality is not adequate for a screenshot; there is no universal numeric quality or file-size comparison that applies to every page (image format documentation).

Thumbnail or full-page screenshot?
A thumbnail is usually a reduced image of a page rendered at a chosen viewport. A full-page capture is for when the whole document must be included. GrabzIt’s REST reference assigns special meanings to -1 based on the parameter: for example, it can mean full browser height or unreduced thumbnail height. Full-page examples use full-length settings for browser height and output dimensions. Do not treat -1 as a universal value; set it only in the parameter context documented for the capture you need (REST API reference; full-page examples).

Common problems and fixes
The thumbnail looks stretched
The output dimensions may have a different aspect ratio from the browser viewport. Choose proportional dimensions; if you need a fixed card shape, decide whether cropping is acceptable rather than distorting the screenshot.
The request exposes an application key
A REST request embedded in browser code makes its key visible to users. Move the REST call to your server, or use GrabzIt’s JavaScript API with its documented authorized-domain configuration.

The page content is clipped
The browser viewport may be too short or too narrow for the content you expect to show. Increase the browser dimensions for a viewport thumbnail, or use the full-page settings when the entire document is the intended output.
The output dimensions do not match what you expected
Check whether both output dimensions were supplied. GrabzIt documents proportional height when only width is supplied, and a final-image-sized output when both values are omitted or zero. Also check the package-specific output-height limit in the current API reference.

The image format is unsuitable
Use the documented JPG default for a typical compact preview, or choose PNG if JPG quality is inadequate for the screenshot. GrabzIt also lists WEBP, BMP, and TIFF as supported formats; select a format your application and display path can handle.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF, without setting up a browser capture library yourself. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots.
For example, request a thumbnail image from your server with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and other output options. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I call GrabzIt REST directly from front-end JavaScript?
GrabzIt warns that doing so exposes the application key. Use a server-side REST request or its JavaScript API with authorized domains.
What is GrabzIt’s default image format?
JPG. GrabzIt recommends PNG when JPG quality is not adequate for the screenshot.
