Choose a representative page view, compose it around one focal point, fit the crop to where the image will appear, and inspect the exported file at its actual display size.
1. Decide where the thumbnail will appear
A portfolio card, case-study header, social preview and design-file cover can call for different crops, dimensions and formats. Before designing, check the destination platform’s current image dimensions and accepted formats; there is no universal portfolio-thumbnail size established for every platform.

A third-party guide suggests 1920 × 1080 pixels as a starting point for a Figma file thumbnail. Treat that as guidance for that specific use, not as a standard for portfolio images generally (Web Designer Depot).

Pick a recognizable hero section or another page state that communicates the site’s visual identity. Decide whether a viewport capture, a specific page element or a full-page capture best serves the destination. A full-page image is not automatically a better thumbnail: at small sizes it can become too dense to read.

- It can be a gift option
Keep enough context to identify the work, but give the image one clear focal point. Preserve essential text and visual details in the crop; avoid packing in multiple page views simply to show more of the site.
3. Choose a workflow for the kind of control you need
| Workflow | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Figma frames and components | You need compositions that stay consistent across device sizes or breakpoints. | Requires setting up a reusable design system rather than making only a one-off image. |
| Canva templates | You want a quick, template-driven static device mockup. | Offers less detailed layer-level control than a dedicated layered-composition workflow. |
| Photoshop layers | You need detailed control over a static composition. | Layered editing gives control but is less template-driven. |
Figma’s responsive-design guidance covers frames for multiple device sizes, breakpoints, auto layout, constraints, libraries and components (Figma’s responsive design guide). Its website-planning guidance describes a progression from information architecture to wireframes and mockups (Figma’s website design guide). The Canva-versus-Photoshop distinction above is a practical workflow description, not the result of a comparative performance test (Web Designer Depot).

When a device frame helps
A device or browser frame can make a screenshot feel like a presentation mockup, but it should support—not compete with—the project view. Device Shots describes a workflow of adding a screenshot, choosing a frame and exporting an image. Its product page advertises preset canvases, custom dimensions up to 6000 px and exports up to 4×; these are vendor claims that may change, so confirm the available options in the tool before production (Device Shots features; Device Shots).
4. Make, preview and export the thumbnail
- Set the canvas for the destination. Use the portfolio platform’s current requirements rather than carrying one size over from a different use.
- Place the representative screenshot. Crop to a recognizable view, then add a device frame or supporting design elements only if they clarify the work.
- Check the small-size view. Preview the thumbnail at the size readers will actually see. If its key detail or essential text disappears, simplify the composition or choose a clearer capture.
- Export and inspect the file itself. Check the crop, edges, text legibility and orientation in the exported image—not just in the editable canvas.
- Confirm destination compatibility. Verify that the exported dimensions and format meet the platform’s current requirements.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a website screenshot as the starting point for your composition, ScreenshotNeo can return an image from one GET request. You can then crop or place that capture in your design tool. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server by Yorker Media; see ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.

Quick Recap
Rank #4
Common thumbnail problems
- The preview looks cluttered: Replace an overly long full-page capture or collage with one representative section and a clearer focal point.
- The design looks good large but fails as a card: Inspect it at its actual display size, then simplify small details or adjust the crop.
- The exported image differs from the canvas: Open the exported file and check its edges, crop, text and orientation before publishing.
- The image is rejected or displayed poorly by the portfolio: Recheck that platform’s current dimensions and accepted formats; do not assume another destination’s settings apply.
