For a Squarespace portfolio, use a project’s featured image for its on-site tile or project representation. If you want a different image when someone shares that project’s URL, set a separate Social image in the project settings. In Squarespace 7.1, check how each image crops on desktop and mobile before publishing.
Choose the image setting for the preview you mean
“Preview image” can mean either an image shown while visitors browse your portfolio or the image shown in a link card when someone shares a project URL. Squarespace treats these as separate roles:

| Image setting | Where it is used | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Featured image | The project’s on-site representation, such as a portfolio tile or collection item. | Use it for the image people see while browsing your portfolio. |
| Social image | An alternate image associated with a shared page or collection-item URL. | Use it when the shared-link card needs a different composition from the on-site image. |
A site-wide social sharing logo is a separate setting; it is not the project’s alternate social image. Social networks and messaging apps decide how to display available sharing information, so Squarespace settings do not guarantee identical previews or a particular cache-refresh time across services. See Squarespace’s guides to featured images and social sharing images.
Add a featured image and optional social image in Squarespace 7.1
- In the Squarespace web interface, open Pages, select the portfolio page, then add a project or open an existing one.
- Open the project settings and, in the General tab, add the project’s featured image and descriptive title.
- If the shared-link preview should use a different image, open Social image in the project settings and upload that alternate image.
- Save the project. New projects are drafts by default; publish when the page is ready for visitors.
- Open the project page and inspect the image in its actual layout. Adjust the focal point if the subject is off-center, then check the mobile presentation as well as desktop.
Squarespace’s current Portfolio pages guide describes projects built from page sections. On a version 7.0 site, project-page behavior depends on the template and the legacy project-page controls; do not assume the 7.1 steps or settings appear in the same place. See Project pages in version 7.0.

Prepare an image that holds up in a tile and on mobile
Choose a clear subject and suitable composition
Portfolio thumbnails are often viewed small. Choose an image whose subject remains recognizable at that size, and avoid putting essential text or a logo close to an edge where a responsive crop might remove it. When possible, start with an image shape close to the display area’s shape: a mismatch between image and container is a common cause of cropping. The visible crop still depends on the layout and container.
Use Squarespace’s focal-point control to move the visual center toward the important part of the image. Squarespace describes this control as a built-in centering feature for many image areas; it can help with responsive crops, but it cannot make every layout show the same crop. See Using focal points to center images and Troubleshooting cropping issues.
Use the right source size and file format
Squarespace’s image-formatting guidance lists responsive widths of 100, 300, 500, 750, 1000, 1500, and 2500 pixels, and calls 2500 pixels ideal for most images. This is a general recommendation, not a required size for every portfolio tile. Squarespace accepts JPG, GIF, PNG, and WebP files, with a 20 MB file-size limit and a 120-megapixel resolution limit. It recommends image-block files of 500 KB or less for faster loading and notes that images narrower than 1500 pixels may appear blurry. Keep the original file locally. Details are in Add and resize images, Formatting images for display on the web, and Image blocks.

That legacy guidance is not a universal thumbnail-size requirement for 7.1 portfolios.

Check responsive layouts
Review the project at desktop and mobile sizes, particularly if the page uses Fluid Engine. Inspect the actual tile or section rather than assuming that the uploaded image’s full frame will remain visible. Squarespace’s Responsive design guidance explains why layouts adapt to screen size.
Squarespace’s built-in image resizer provides presets and standard social-platform aspect ratios, but it resizes files before upload; it cannot resize an image that is already uploaded to Squarespace.

Or skip the browser setup
If you also need a screenshot of the published project page—for review, documentation, or an internal preview—a screenshot API can capture its current appearance. This does not set the portfolio’s featured or social image. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it can also remove known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. The API returns whether a page was clean, blocked, blank, timed out, or failed to load, and only clean shots are billed.
Example cURL request (replace the URL with your published project page and use your API key):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and formats. ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Troubleshoot common preview problems
The portfolio tile shows the wrong image
Check the project’s featured image in its General settings. The Social image field is for an alternate shared-link preview; setting it alone does not replace the project’s on-site featured image.
Best Value
The shared URL shows an unexpected image
Confirm that the project has the intended Social image and that you are sharing the project URL, not the site homepage. Platforms may select among available page images and may retain previously fetched preview data; Squarespace does not promise a universal refresh interval or identical display across services. Consult the relevant platform’s current documentation for platform-specific behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe subject is cropped out
Move the focal point toward the subject, use an image closer in shape to the display container, and inspect both desktop and mobile layouts. If one image cannot work in both contexts, use a separate Social image for the shared URL.
The image looks blurry
Check the original dimensions and export quality. Squarespace notes that images narrower than 1500 pixels may appear blurry, while 2500 pixels wide is its general ideal recommendation for most images. Those are general guidelines, not a guarantee for every layout or device.
You cannot find the project controls in the app
Use Squarespace’s web interface. Its Portfolio pages guide says the app does not support adding portfolio pages or editing projects.
