Decide where the video will be posted, find soft light and a quiet spot, keep the phone steady, and make a short test recording before you film the full take. Extra gear is optional; solve a specific problem with it only when your setup needs it.
Plan the video before you record
Choose one purpose
Write one sentence describing what viewers should learn, see, or feel. For a tutorial, list the steps in order. For a short social clip, plan a quick opening, the main point, and a finish. A simple outline helps you stay focused without memorizing a script.

Make a short shot list
For each shot, note what is in frame, the camera angle, and whether the phone will stay still or move. A talking-head video may need only one shot; a demonstration may benefit from close-ups of the important actions. Plan a few detail shots or B-roll clips if they will help explain the subject or cover edits.

Match orientation to the destination
Choose vertical framing for a vertical-first format such as YouTube Shorts. For conventional HD video, YouTube’s general mobile filming guidance recommends horizontal 16:9. If you want to publish the same footage in both formats, plan for that before recording: the subject and essential action must remain visible in each crop. See YouTube’s mobile filming tips for its format guidance.

Find a suitable spot
Look for a place with usable light and little background noise. Check the background for distracting objects and private information. If you are filming other people or on property you do not control, consider permissions and privacy; avoid showing personal details such as a home address. YouTube offers additional filming tips on planning and privacy.
Set up the phone
- Clean the lens. A fingerprint can make the image look hazy, so wipe the camera lens with a soft, clean cloth.
- Silence interruptions. Turn off notifications or use a focus setting so alerts do not interrupt the take.
- Choose the camera that suits the shot. Use the rear camera when you can frame yourself or the subject comfortably; YouTube notes that it often records at higher resolution. The front camera can be more practical when you need to see yourself while recording.
- Start with automatic settings. The default camera mode is a reasonable starting point. If the phone offers focus and exposure locking and your shot is fixed, locking them can prevent visible focus or brightness shifts. Controls differ across phones and operating-system versions, so check your camera app rather than relying on a universal tap sequence.
- Check the frame and storage. Confirm that the subject is in frame and that the phone has room to record. Keep the microphone opening clear of your hand or phone mount.
Use light that makes the subject easy to see
Soft, even light is usually more flattering and easier to manage than harsh direct sun. Indoors, try facing a window so its light falls on the subject. Outdoors, open shade can reduce hard shadows. If a bright window or sun is directly behind the subject and leaves their face or the object too dark, turn the subject or change the camera angle. Improve the placement of existing light first; consider a small compatible LED light only if daylight and room lighting are not workable.

Record understandable audio
Viewers need to hear the words clearly. As the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Communications Toolkit puts it, “Poor audio is more distracting to viewers than poor video.”
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose a quiet room and, if practical, turn off fans or buzzing electronics.
- Avoid a hard, echoing space when possible. Soft furnishings can help reduce reflections.
- Keep the speaker close to the phone’s microphone and make sure it is not covered.
- Record a short test, then listen to it before filming the full take. Check for background noise, echo, distortion, and a low voice level.
If the speaker must stand farther away or the location is noisy, a compatible external microphone may help. A wired lavalier microphone is one option for a stationary speaker; a shotgun microphone is another type described in the UC ANR toolkit. Check the phone’s port and any adapter requirements before buying a microphone, test the connection, and listen back. Start with the built-in mic if it captures clear speech.

Keep the phone steady and capture useful footage
For a fixed shot
Set the phone at a useful height on a stable surface or phone mount. For hands-free self-recording or a tutorial, a smartphone tripod with a phone bracket can make framing easier; a stack of stable household items can work as a no-cost alternative if the phone is secure and will not fall.
For handheld or moving shots
Hold the phone with two hands and move slowly and deliberately. A gimbal is a specialized mechanical stabilizer for smoother moving footage, but it is not required for a basic how-to video. First try steadier movement and simpler shots; consider a gimbal only if you regularly need smooth footage while moving.

Edit and share the video
- Review your takes. Keep the usable clips and remove failed starts, long pauses, and mistakes that do not belong in the final video.
- Arrange clips in a clear order. Put actions and explanations in the sequence viewers need to follow. Add detail shots where they clarify what is happening.
- Trim and check transitions. Basic built-in phone editing may be enough for trimming. A dedicated editor can offer more controls, but app features, availability, and platform support change over time.
- Export for the destination. Choose an aspect ratio and file format suited to where you plan to publish. For app examples, Vimeo’s guide updated December 26, 2024, listed iMovie and LumaFusion for iOS and PowerDirector and InShot for Android; that is a dated list, not a current ranking or guarantee of features, price, or availability. See Vimeo’s guide to creating video with a phone.
- Watch the finished file once. Check that the picture, sound, framing, and edits look right before sharing.
Choose a setup for the problem you have
| Your situation | Start with | Add gear only if |
|---|---|---|
| Simple clip or first video | Your phone, a quiet spot, window light or shade, and a steady hand or surface. | The test recording reveals a specific problem you cannot solve by changing the setup. |
| Fixed presenter or tutorial | A stable surface and a frame at a useful height. | You need hands-free, eye-level framing; then consider a phone tripod and mount. If the speaker must stand away from the phone, consider a compatible wired lavalier mic. |
| Walking or moving footage | Slow, deliberate movement and two-handed support. | Smoother moving shots are a recurring need; then consider a gimbal. |
| Dim environment | Reposition the subject near available light or use open shade. | Existing light cannot adequately illuminate the subject; then consider a compact compatible LED light. |
Or let it run in the cloud
