For a still thumbnail before playback, set the native HTML poster attribute on a <video> element. For a moving preview, start muted playback when a visitor chooses to preview it, and provide a keyboard-operable way to play and pause; hover alone is not enough. Gatsby supports local video files and hosted media, while build-time frame extraction is optional and adds processing and compatibility concerns.

A poster is an image displayed before playback; it is not automatically generated just because a video is in Gatsby. If no poster is supplied, the browser may show the first available frame once it can access the video. See MDN’s video element reference and Gatsby’s guide to working with video.

Add a static poster to a Gatsby video
Prepare a representative image, then reference it with poster. This example imports a local video and image; exact asset bundling depends on the project’s Gatsby configuration and asset pipeline.

Offer a moving preview without making hover the only control
A pointer-triggered preview is different from generating a thumbnail: it plays the video itself after interaction. Cloudinary’s Gatsby example uses mouse-entry and mouse-leave handlers to mute and play a hosted video on entry, then stop it on exit. The tutorial, published June 10, 2022, is a useful illustration of the interaction, not a complete accessible player or a current guide to service pricing and limits: Cloudinary’s Gatsby tutorial.
Use the static poster as the initial visual, then add preview playback only if motion helps visitors. Keep native controls or an equivalent keyboard-operable play/pause action. Consider touch users, keyboard navigation, and people who prefer reduced motion; do not start a preview solely because a pointer happens to cross a card. Gatsby recommends accessible video controls and also points developers to captions, transcripts, and audio descriptions where appropriate in its video guidance.

Generate poster frames during the build only if you need to
For many local files, a media-processing workflow can extract frames, but it is optional. Gatsby community plugin listings describe FFmpeg-based processing and screenshot extraction; their listed compatibility is specific and should not be assumed to cover every current project.

Before adopting a plugin, check its exact Gatsby-version support, maintenance status, binary availability in your build environment, and documented cache behavior. Run a production build in the same environment you deploy from; do not assume an old plugin listing is a guarantee of current compatibility.

Control loading, accessibility, and delivery
Choose a preload hint deliberately
preload accepts none, metadata, or auto. These are hints rather than guarantees: browsers may not follow them exactly, and auto permits downloading the entire video. A poster image does not mean the video itself incurs no loading or bandwidth. See MDN’s reference.
Keep the playback path accessible
- Retain native controls or provide a keyboard-operable equivalent; pointer entry and exit are not enough.
- Do not require touch users to reproduce a mouse-hover interaction.
- Consider respecting reduced-motion preferences before starting animated previews.
- Provide captions, transcripts, or audio descriptions when the content calls for them.
Account for build and format costs
Frame extraction and transcoding add work to builds. Where a plugin supports it, cache generated output and verify that the build environment can access any required binaries. Use multiple sources only for formats you actually serve, with correct MIME types, and test the browser/device combinations that matter to your audience. No performance comparison establishes a universal speed or cost advantage for local processing, hosted delivery, or a particular plugin.

Troubleshoot common preview problems
- The poster does not appear: Check that the image import or URL resolves in the built site and that the
posterprop receives that value. Confirm the image request succeeds in the browser. - The video appears blank or will not play: Verify the source URL and file format, and ensure each
<source>has a type matching the actual file. Test the asset directly and check browser/device support. - The whole video downloads too early: Review the
preloadvalue.autopermits full download;noneormetadatamay better suit a gallery, though the browser treats these as hints. - Hover works but keyboard or touch does not: Add a visible or otherwise accessible play/pause control and do not make pointer interaction the sole route to playback.
- A build-time plugin fails or slows builds: Compare its documented Gatsby support with your installed version, check FFmpeg/ffprobe availability, and configure the documented cache. Test a production build in the deployment environment.
- Preview playback starts unexpectedly: Restrict it to intentional interaction, stop it when the preview ends or the visitor leaves the relevant interaction, and consider reduced-motion preferences.
