Google Docs has no native control for rotating text inside a table cell. On a computer, you can make a vertical heading by creating a text box in Insert > Drawing > New, rotating the box, and inserting it beside or over the table column. The result is a drawing object, not text that lives in the cell.
Make a vertical heading with a drawing
Google’s drawing instructions for Docs on a computer cover adding and adjusting drawing objects. To create a rotated label for a narrow table column:
- Open the document on a computer and place the cursor near the heading’s intended location.
- Choose Insert > Drawing > New.
- In the drawing editor, select Text Box, draw a box, and type the heading.
- Select the text box and drag its rotation handle until the text is oriented as needed.
- Click Save and close to insert the drawing into the document.
- Resize or reposition the drawing relative to the table. Check its alignment against the cell boundaries after making changes to the table or page layout.
What the workaround does—and does not do
The inserted label is a drawing object containing text. You can position and resize it, but it is not live text formatted inside the table cell. That distinction matters if you later edit the table: the drawing’s placement may need adjustment.
Docs Editors Community Product Experts have advised that Docs does not offer native table-cell text rotation. For example, a Product Expert answering a question about rotated table text on April 17, 2023, described a drawing text box as the workaround; this is community guidance, not an official Google feature specification. If you need rotated text in a spreadsheet
Google lists “Rotate text in a cell” among formatting options in its Google Sheets editing and formatting help. That is a Sheets feature, not a Docs table feature. A Docs Editors Community response cautions that rotated text may not stay rotated when a Sheets table is pasted into Docs, so check the pasted result rather than assuming the formatting will carry over.
Don’t confuse text direction with rotation
Google’s right-to-left text controls cover paragraph direction and table column order for right-to-left language layouts. Those settings do not provide a general control for turning a heading vertically.

For repeated headings
A Google Docs Editors Community Product Expert described copying and pasting a drawing for repeated tear-away tab labels in a response dated June 1, 2026. You can try the same approach for repeated headings, then adjust each copy’s position. It is a practical community workaround, so verify placement in your own document and layout.
