Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To control how a Shopify link looks when someone shares it, set a store-wide fallback image, add featured images to products, collections, and blog posts, and verify that your active theme outputs the right Open Graph metadata. The country does not change this setup: Shopify’s reviewed guidance describes general storefront behavior, not India-specific settings. Social apps may also render the same URL differently.
1. Set Shopify’s store-wide fallback image
- In Shopify Admin, open Online Store > Preferences.
- Find Social sharing image and SEO, add or change the image, then save.
This image is the default when a page has no other image available. It is a fallback, not necessarily the image every shared URL will use: a theme setting or hard-coded theme code can take precedence. Shopify’s social media image guidance explains the fallback and troubleshooting behavior.

2. Choose a featured image for each page type
For Shopify’s free themes, featured images are used for product pages, collection pages, and blog posts. Pages without a featured image—such as the homepage or an About page—use the store’s social sharing image. Shopify’s page_image Liquid object documents this page-image and fallback behavior, including its use in Open Graph image tags when a theme does not provide those tags.

- Products: check the product’s featured image.
- Collections: check the collection’s featured image.
- Blog posts: check the post’s featured image.
- Homepage and other pages: confirm that the store-wide image is suitable, or use a theme-supported page image if available.
These defaults are documented for Shopify free themes; other themes may implement image selection differently.

3. Check the title and description shown with the image
A preview may show a title and description alongside its image. Shopify’s page_description Liquid object provides a brief description for search listings and social previews. Review the relevant page’s title and description as well as its image so that the shared card represents the actual page.
Open Graph metadata commonly identifies the shared title with og:title, preferred URL with og:url, content type with og:type, summary with og:description, and image with og:image. Shopify’s developer article on Open Graph tags explains these roles and older Liquid theme patterns; check the live theme rather than assuming its structure matches that older example.
4. Inspect theme metadata before editing code
Social metadata belongs in the page’s <head>. Before adding or changing tags, inspect the active theme’s head markup and any included snippets or theme settings. Confirm whether it already outputs Open Graph tags: duplicate or conflicting tags can make it unclear which image or text a platform will read.

Shopify documents automatic og:image fallback tag generation from page_image when a theme does not include those tags. That can cover the image fallback without manually adding a second tag. If you do need a theme edit, use the active theme’s existing Liquid conventions and check the rendered page source afterward. Shopify’s cited Open Graph article is dated 28 June 2017, so treat its code examples as background, not a guarantee about a current theme.
5. Debug the preview for the exact URL
- Check the image source order. If the wrong image appears, inspect hard-coded theme code first, then the theme’s social image settings, then Online Store > Preferences. Some themes only use images uploaded in their own social media settings.
- Inspect what the page outputs. Open the exact storefront URL and verify its title, description, canonical or preferred URL, and
og:imagein the page head. Check that the image URL is the one you intend. - Use the platform’s preview inspector. Shopify names Twitter’s Card Validator, Facebook’s Sharing Debugger, and LinkedIn’s Post Inspector as tools for checking what their crawlers read. A preview inspector shows a platform’s interpretation; it does not guarantee that every social app or every Instagram surface will display a rich card.
- Refresh Facebook’s saved link data. Facebook may retain saved preview information. After changing an image, use the Sharing Debugger to refresh the URL’s cached data, then check the preview again.
- Check the page-specific image again. A product or post image may override the store-wide fallback, so confirm the featured image on the particular page being shared.
Native settings, theme changes, or an app?
| Approach | Per-page control | Code access | Setup and upkeep | Platform coverage and cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify settings and featured images | Featured images for products, collections, and blog posts in free themes; store image as fallback on pages without one. | No theme-code edit is required for the documented image workflow. | Lowest setup burden; confirm how the active theme selects images. | Preview output is still determined by each platform. No additional app cost is established for these built-in settings. |
| Theme settings or Liquid changes | Depends on what the theme supports or what its code is configured to output. | Theme access and care with existing head tags are needed for code edits. | More setup and maintenance; check the output again after theme changes. | Open Graph tags provide metadata for platforms that read them; rendering is not guaranteed to be identical across apps. |
| Optional app | Depends on the app’s advertised controls. | May reduce direct code editing, depending on the app and theme. | Introduces an app to configure and maintain. | The PreviewBuilder App Store listing advertises templates and image/meta customization for products, collections, pages, blogs, and articles. It showed $4.99/month and a free trial when reviewed; verify current terms in the Shopify App Store listing. Those listing claims do not guarantee a particular platform preview. |
Start with Shopify’s native images and the active theme’s existing metadata. Consider a theme edit or an app only when those controls do not provide the page-level behavior you need.

Does Shopify provide India-specific social preview settings?
The Shopify setup guidance cited here describes general store settings and theme behavior; it does not identify India-specific settings or preview behavior.
