How to Create Slow Motion in Premiere Pro

Use Speed/Duration to slow an entire clip in Premiere Pro, or Time Remapping for a slow-motion section or speed ramp. Learn how interpolation affects the result.

To slow an entire clip in Premiere Pro, select it in the Timeline, choose Clip > Speed/Duration (or right-click the clip and choose Speed/Duration), then set Speed to less than 100%. To slow only part of a clip or create a speed ramp, use Time Remapping. The smoothness depends on your source footage and the time-interpolation method you choose.

Slow down an entire clip with Speed/Duration

  1. Import your footage and add it to a sequence.

  2. Select the clip in the Timeline.

  3. Open Clip > Speed/Duration, or right-click the clip and select Speed/Duration.

  4. Enter a value below 100 in the Speed field. For example, 50% plays the clip at half speed; Adobe uses this as a tutorial example, not as a setting that suits every shot.

  5. If needed, choose a Time Interpolation method, then click OK and review the clip in the Program Monitor.

Slowing a clip makes it longer in the sequence. Check the clips that follow it and make room if necessary, or enable Ripple Edit in the Speed/Duration dialog to shift later clips along with the duration change. If the clip has audio you want to retain, Maintain Audio Pitch can help preserve its pitch as playback slows.

Slow down part of a clip or create a speed ramp

Use Time Remapping when a clip should play at different speeds—for example, normal speed, then slow motion, then normal speed again.

Speed-remapped clips—especially clips with large speed changes—can take more processing power to preview smoothly. If playback stutters while editing, proxies or a lower-resolution preview can make the edit easier to review; judge the final motion from a rendered result.

Choose a time-interpolation method

When Premiere Pro needs frames between the original frames to produce the selected speed, the interpolation method affects how those frames are handled. Adobe describes three options:

Method How it works When to try it
Frame Sampling Repeats or removes existing frames to reach the requested speed. A simple choice for minor speed changes or when some choppiness is acceptable.
Frame Blending Blends neighboring frames to create intermediate frames. Try it when you want smoother motion, particularly in footage without much fast movement.
Optical Flow Analyzes motion between frames and generates intermediate frames. Try it for significant speed changes. Adobe describes it as the highest-quality option for slow motion, but the result depends on the shot and can contain visual artifacts.

To compare the options, render the section and inspect moving edges and objects, not just the preview. Optical Flow can struggle when motion is complex or edges are unclear, and it does not guarantee artifact-free results. Adobe recommends footage with clear motion and defined edges for this method.

Get smoother slow motion from the source footage

Adobe recommends shooting at a high frame rate for the best slow-motion results. Higher-frame-rate footage gives the edit more captured frames to work with when played back slowly. A dramatic slowdown from footage that was not captured at a high frame rate may look choppy; interpolation can create intermediate frames, but the outcome depends on the footage and settings.

There is no single minimum recording frame rate or speed percentage that guarantees smooth slow motion. Consider the source frame rate, the sequence, how much you are slowing the shot, and the visible result after rendering. Existing footage can still be slowed in Premiere Pro; a high-frame-rate camera is not required to use these editing controls.
