How to Create, Score, and Share a Quiz in Microsoft Forms

Create a scored quiz in Microsoft Forms with answer keys, points, feedback, response controls, tested branching, and submission review.

To make a scored quiz in Microsoft Forms, choose New Quiz, add questions, mark the correct answers, assign points, then preview the quiz before sharing it. You can control who responds and when, review submissions, provide feedback, and export results to Excel.

Create a quiz and add questions

  1. Open Microsoft Forms and select New Quiz—not New Form.
  2. Enter a title and, if useful, a description that explains the quiz and its expectations.
  3. Select Add new or a format under Quick start with to add a question.
  4. Choose a question type that matches what you need to assess. Microsoft documents Choice, Text, Rating, Date, Ranking, Likert, File upload, and Net Promoter Score. Not every format will suit every assessment.
  5. Set options such as whether the question is required. Build the questions before configuring branching.

Forms saves as you work. If you have a Microsoft 365 account and a Copilot license, you can use Copilot to draft a quiz. Treat the generated quiz as a starting point: check its wording, answer key, and points before sharing. Microsoft’s documentation describes generating a draft and keeping or regenerating it.

Set correct answers, points, and feedback

For a question that supports scoring, select the correct answer or answers and enter the point value. Check the answer key yourself, especially if questions were copied or drafted automatically. An incorrect key can produce a score that looks precise but is wrong.

You can also add an optional message associated with an answer. Use it to explain why a response is correct or what a respondent should review. After people submit the quiz, you can review and grade their responses, add feedback, and post scores.

Preview and test the quiz

Select Preview to inspect the computer and mobile layouts. Answer the quiz as a respondent and submit the preview, then return to editing if anything needs correction.

  • Check that each question is understandable and its answer options are distinct.
  • Confirm that the answer key and point values match your intended scoring.
  • Look for layout problems on both computer and mobile views.
  • Test any branching to make sure respondents reach the intended questions or finish screen.

Choose response access and availability

Before sharing, open Settings and decide who can respond and when. Available controls include setting a response window and turning off Accept responses to close the quiz. You can enter a custom message for respondents who open a closed quiz. Access choices vary with account and organization settings, so verify the audience restriction shown in your own form.

For a quiz intended for students, Microsoft’s sharing guidance for EDU customers describes organization-only responding as the default in that context. Do not assume that default applies to personal or other organizational accounts; check the setting before distributing the link.

Decide whether to shuffle questions

Question shuffling can vary the order respondents see. You can lock selected questions in place if some need to stay in a particular position. Shuffling is unavailable when a quiz uses multiple sections or pages, so decide whether randomized order or section-based organization matters more for your quiz.

Take a Test is a separate option for a secure assessment environment on compatible Windows devices, not a universal setting for every respondent. Microsoft says students without access to the app cannot open a quiz configured this way. Check device compatibility and school configuration before using it.

Add branching without sending respondents backward

Branching directs respondents to a later question or to the end of the quiz based on an answer. Add it after creating your questions so the destinations are available.

  1. Open the question where a response should change the route.
  2. Use the question’s options to set a destination for each relevant answer.
  3. Choose a later question or End of the form as the destination.
  4. Preview and test each route before sharing.

Keep every branch moving forward. Microsoft warns that branching to a preceding question can cause later questions to be skipped and take the respondent directly to submission. Sections can also be branched.

Share the quiz with respondents

Select Collect responses, confirm the audience and response settings, then choose an available sharing method. Microsoft’s EDU guidance describes options including a link, email, and QR code. Use the method that suits your audience, and make sure the access setting matches who should be able to respond.

Review submissions, give feedback, and export results

Open Responses to review summary information, question-level results, or individual responses. You can grade by person or by question, add general or answer-specific feedback, and post scores to students. When you need to analyze the results elsewhere, use Open in Excel.

Deleting a response cannot be undone. Changes made to results in Excel do not change the quiz itself.

Features that depend on account or device access

  • Copilot quiz drafting: Microsoft says a Microsoft 365 account and Copilot license are required.
  • Math quiz features: Microsoft describes these as available to Microsoft 365 subscribers. Account access and the current Forms experience may affect availability.
  • Take a Test: Requires compatible access to the Windows app; respondents without access cannot open a quiz configured for it.
