Use a WooCommerce Variable product when one listing needs selectable combinations such as size, color, material, or capacity. Create the attributes first, generate every valid combination—or add only the combinations you sell—then set each variation’s price, SKU, inventory, fulfillment data, and image before publishing. The same combinations can be created and maintained through the WooCommerce REST API or bulk-editing tools when the catalog is too large for manual editing.

What a WooCommerce variation is
A variation is a purchasable configuration of one parent product. A shirt with Size Small and Color Blue is one variation; Size Medium and Color Blue is another. The parent product supplies the shared title, description, and general presentation, while each variation can have its own commercial and fulfillment values.

WooCommerce’s variable-product type is designed for products with selectable options and lets you control price, stock, image, and other details for each combination. A simple product is enough when every unit has the same options, price, and inventory. Choose a variable product when at least one option changes what the customer can buy or what you must track.
Examples that fit variations
- A hoodie offered in four sizes and three colors.
- A laptop sold with different memory and storage combinations.
- A framed print with several dimensions and frame finishes.
- A replacement part available in model-specific configurations.
Do not use variations merely to display unrelated products in one listing. Every variation should represent a legitimate combination that can be priced, fulfilled, and described as part of the same product.

Plan the product before opening the editor
Variation setup is easiest when the catalog data is decided in advance. Write down the attributes, allowed values, sellable combinations, and per-combination commercial data. This prevents a generated matrix full of options that you do not actually stock.
Choose attributes and terms
An attribute is the dimension customers choose, such as Size or Color. Its terms are the values, such as Small, Medium, Large, Red, and Blue. Use a global attribute when the same dimension will be reused across products; use a product-specific attribute when the values only make sense for one listing. Keep spelling and capitalization consistent, because WooCommerce treats differently written terms as different values.

Multiplying the number of terms gives the maximum number of combinations. Three sizes and four colors can produce twelve combinations, but you may sell only eight. List the sellable combinations before using automatic generation. Manual creation is safer when some size-and-color pairs do not exist, have different lead times, or require a different image.
Prepare operational identifiers
Decide whether every variation needs a unique SKU. WooCommerce documentation describes the SKU as a unique identifier used to search for and track a product or variation. A distinct SKU is especially useful when warehouse, accounting, marketplace, or fulfillment systems need to distinguish combinations. Also gather variation images, weights, dimensions, shipping classes, regular prices, sale prices, and stock quantities before data entry.
Create a variable product in the WooCommerce dashboard
- Open the product editor. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Products > Add New Product for a new listing, or open an existing product under Products.
- Enter the shared product information. Add the product name and the parent-level description, category, and other details that apply to every configuration.
- Choose the product type. In the Product data panel, open the type selector and choose Variable Product. The Attributes and Variations panels will then be available.
Save the draft if you are working on a substantial catalog. Saving early reduces the risk of losing attribute terms or a long variation list if the editor session expires.
Add attributes and their values
Use an existing global attribute
- Open the product’s Attributes panel.
- Select the global attribute, such as Size or Color.
- Select the terms that are valid for this product.
- Enable the option that makes the attribute available for variations.
- Save the attributes.
Global attributes are useful when you want consistent filtering and reporting across the store. A shared Color attribute, for example, keeps “Navy” from being entered as several slightly different product-specific values.

Create a product-specific attribute
- In Attributes, choose the option to add a custom or product-specific attribute.
- Enter the attribute name, such as Connector type or Pack size.
- Enter its values using the separator shown by your editor, then select the option to use the attribute for variations.
- Save the attributes.
Product-specific attributes are appropriate when the terms are unique to one listing and should not become store-wide taxonomy. They still must be saved before WooCommerce can use them to build variations.
Check the attribute list before continuing
- Every value a customer should be able to select is present.
- Values are spelled and capitalized consistently.
- Only attributes that genuinely define a sellable configuration are marked for variations.
- Values that are not offered have been removed rather than left for a customer to discover later.
Generate every combination or add selected variations
Open the Variations panel after saving attributes. WooCommerce offers two fundamentally different creation methods.
Generate variations for a complete matrix
Choose Generate variations when every combination of the selected attribute terms is a real offer. WooCommerce creates one variation for each combination. For a product with two attributes, the result is the Cartesian product: every selected value in the first attribute paired with every selected value in the second.
Generation is quick, but it can create combinations you cannot sell. Review the list immediately and remove invalid entries before assigning prices or publishing. A large matrix also increases editing and testing work, so do not generate unused combinations merely because the editor permits it.

Choose Add manually when only selected combinations exist. Add one variation, choose its value for each attribute, and repeat for the combinations you actually stock. This approach takes longer initially but avoids disabled, misleading, or accidentally purchasable pairs.
Manual creation is also useful when combinations have very different lead times, images, or pricing rules and need careful review as they are entered.

Configure each variation
Expand a variation row to expose its fields. The exact controls can vary slightly by WooCommerce version and installed extensions, but the core data model includes the following properties.

Enter at least the information required by your store’s checkout and fulfillment process. If a variation has a distinct physical item, unique SKU, or separate stock count, do not rely on the parent value to represent it.

Set inventory correctly
Use variation-level stock for independent quantities
Enable stock management on each variation when Small Blue and Large Blue are separate inventory pools. Enter the quantity for each combination and choose the appropriate out-of-stock and backorder behavior. Customers can then buy one combination without consuming stock assigned to another.
Use shared or parent-level stock when units are interchangeable
If all combinations draw from one common pool, configure stock through the parent arrangement described in WooCommerce’s variable-product guidance instead of pretending each variation has an independent quantity. This is appropriate only when selling one combination genuinely reduces the same shared inventory available to every other combination.
Decide this before publishing. Switching inventory logic after orders exist can produce misleading availability unless quantities are reconciled with the actual warehouse count.
Apply repeated values with bulk actions
Variation panels provide bulk actions for values that are identical across many rows. Use them for a common price, stock status, shipping class, or another repeated setting, then open individual rows for exceptions. Bulk editing reduces repetitive entry but can overwrite deliberate differences, so inspect the rows after applying an action.

- Filter or select the relevant variation rows.
- Choose the bulk action that matches the field you want to change.
- Enter or select the shared value and apply it.
- Review every affected row, especially prices, quantities, and backorder settings.
- Save the variation changes.
Save, preview, and publish
- Save the attributes and variation edits in the product editor.
- Confirm that every intended combination is enabled and that no unwanted generated combination remains.
- Preview the product page as a customer.
- Select each attribute combination in the front-end controls.
- Check that the correct price, image, availability message, and shipping behavior appear for each test selection.
- Publish the product, or update it if it was already live.
Test unavailable combinations as well as available ones. A disabled or out-of-stock choice should communicate its state rather than silently selecting a different variation.

The WooCommerce REST API supports creating, viewing, updating, deleting, and batch-managing individual variations. It exposes variation properties such as regular and sale prices, SKU, stock-management mode, stock quantity, in-stock state, backorders, weight, dimensions, shipping class, image, and attributes.
Use the API when the data is already structured
API automation is a good fit when a merchandising, ERP, or inventory system already holds attribute values and per-variation data, or when the same product pattern must be repeated. It also makes recurring price and inventory updates repeatable instead of dependent on manual clicks.
Recommended API sequence
- Create or identify the parent variable product.
- Define its global or non-global attributes and the terms that can be used for variations.
- Create each variation with its attribute combination and required commercial fields.
- Set inventory, backorders, dimensions, shipping class, image, and description where they differ.
- Read the created records back and verify their IDs, attributes, prices, and stock states.
- Use update or batch operations for later changes, and delete only combinations that should no longer exist.
A variation payload should represent one complete combination. In a JSON request, the attributes array identifies the selected terms, while fields such as regular_price, sale_price, sku, manage_stock, stock_quantity, in_stock, backorders, weight, dimensions, shipping_class, and image carry the values that differ from other combinations.

Use your store’s currency, identifiers, authentication, and validation requirements. Never let an import create duplicate SKUs or combinations that the storefront cannot fulfill.
API safeguards
- Validate that every attribute option belongs to the parent product’s allowed terms.
- Detect an existing combination before creating another record.
- Keep prices as values appropriate to the store’s currency and accounting system.
- Record API responses and errors so a failed batch can be corrected without guessing which rows succeeded.
- Run a small test batch and inspect the storefront before importing a full catalog.
Bulk-edit a large catalog
WooCommerce documents a Bulk Product Editor whose use cases include converting simple products into variable products and editing attributes and variations in bulk. Bulk tooling is most useful when many products share a repeatable structure, such as a standard Size attribute, or when prices and stock must be changed across an established catalog.

Choose the least complex method that meets the catalog’s needs. The deciding factors are catalog size, whether every attribute combination is valid, how complicated per-variation inventory is, how many unique images and SKUs are required, how often values change, and how much review time is available.
Maintain variations after launch
Changing attributes can invalidate existing combinations
WooCommerce warns that changing attributes after variations have been created may require redefining the variations so the combinations work correctly. Treat an attribute edit as a data change, not a cosmetic label change. After adding, removing, or renaming terms, inspect the variation list and recreate combinations that no longer match the new attribute set.

WooCommerce documentation notes changed dynamic-dropdown behavior for products with more than 30 variations. Test the selection controls on the published page when a product crosses that size, and verify that customers can still choose every intended combination.
Routine maintenance checklist
- Compare variation quantities with the physical or integrated inventory source.
- Check that each active combination has the correct price and tax treatment for your store.
- Confirm that images still represent the selected color, finish, or configuration.
- Retire combinations you no longer sell instead of leaving them purchasable.
- Review SKUs for duplicates before an import or synchronization.
- Test a representative available, unavailable, and backordered combination after major edits.
Troubleshoot common variation problems
The variation selector does not show an option
Open Attributes and verify that the term is attached to the product, marked for use in variations, and saved. Then check that at least one variation uses that exact term. A term that exists globally but is not assigned to the product will not be available for its combinations.
A combination appears but cannot be purchased
Expand the variation and check that it is enabled, has a price, and is in stock or intentionally configured for backorders. Confirm that the selected attribute values exactly match the variation. A generated row that was never completed can remain visible but unavailable.
Two variations seem to represent the same combination
Compare every attribute value, including capitalization and whitespace, and inspect imported records for duplicates. Remove the extra row or correct its attributes before accepting orders. Give each operationally distinct item its own SKU.
All variations share the wrong quantity
Review the stock-management setting. If combinations should have independent inventory, enable variation-level management and enter each quantity. If they intentionally share one pool, remove conflicting per-variation quantities and manage the common stock according to the parent configuration.
The image or price does not change after selection
Open the affected variation and verify its image and price fields, then save the product. Test the selection in a fresh storefront session. If only one combination fails, compare its attributes with the row WooCommerce is expected to match; a mismatch can prevent the intended variation from being selected.
An attribute edit broke existing variations
Recheck the attribute terms and redefine the affected combinations. Do not assume that changing a term automatically migrates every old variation to the new value. Confirm the rebuilt list before restoring the product to sale.
