Use a print stylesheet to remove screen-only controls, keep the main content readable, and set page margins with @page. Put the rules in an @media print block or a separate stylesheet linked with media="print", then check the result in print preview: pagination and browser print settings affect what reaches paper or PDF.
Choose where to put your print CSS
For a small set of print adjustments, add an @media print block to an existing stylesheet. If print rules are extensive or maintained separately, create a dedicated file and link it from the document:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="print.css" media="print">Either approach lets the screen layout remain unchanged while the browser applies print-specific styles. There is no universal winner: choose the arrangement that best fits how your project is organized. The MDN guide to printing with CSS describes both approaches.
Build a practical print stylesheet
Start by hiding controls that do not belong on paper, setting a legible text style, and avoiding awkward splits in common content blocks. Replace the example selectors with the ones used by your site:

}This is a starting point, not a guarantee that every page will fit neatly. Adjust the selectors and typography for the actual content. A rule such as break-inside: avoid can help keep an element together, but long tables, code blocks, or images may still need special handling to fit across pages.
Remove interface clutter without removing useful content
Hide navigation, promotional areas, and interactive controls that are irrelevant on paper. Keep the article, labels, captions, and other information a reader needs to understand the printed page. Avoid broad selectors that accidentally hide content along with site chrome.

Set readable type and links
Use a high-contrast foreground and background and a text size appropriate for the content. Underlining links helps distinguish them from ordinary text in print. If readers need to identify a link after printing, consider whether its destination should also appear in the content; the example above changes link styling but does not print URLs.
Set paper size, orientation, and margins
The @page rule controls page geometry. For example, size can specify a sheet size or orientation, while margin sets the page margins:

}Choose dimensions for the paper your audience is likely to use, or leave the size flexible when the browser or user should determine it. The W3C’s CSS Paged Media Module Level 3 describes page boxes and flexible layouts for different sheet sizes; it is a Working Draft dated 14 September 2023, so use it for concepts rather than as a guarantee of current browser behavior. MDN also documents CSS paged media.
Make color and meaning survive printing
Browsers may change colors for print, and users may choose grayscale output. Do not communicate meaning through color alone; pair color distinctions with text, symbols, patterns, or other cues. Use clear contrast so the page remains understandable if backgrounds are omitted.

Test page breaks and print preview
- Open print preview. Confirm that the main content remains and that navigation, buttons, and other screen-only controls are gone.
- Check both short and long pages. Inspect margins, clipped content, and breaks through tables, images, and code blocks across multiple sheets.
- Check grayscale. Verify that distinctions and text remain understandable without color or printed backgrounds.
- Recheck after stylesheet changes. Print rules still participate in the cascade; a more specific declaration or another applicable rule can override the one you expected to apply.
Print preview presents the page as paged output, making it the practical place to inspect the result rather than assuming CSS alone proves the layout works. For ordinary layout changes, CSS is usually the right tool. MDN notes that browsers also expose beforeprint and afterprint events for interfaces that need to respond to the print action itself; these events are not a replacement for print styles.
Troubleshoot common print CSS problems
- A hidden item still appears: Check the selector against the rendered element, then inspect its computed styles and cascade. A more specific rule or precedence conflict may be overriding the print declaration; adjust the selector or rule deliberately rather than adding broad hiding rules.
- Important content disappears: Narrow the selector. Hiding a shared wrapper can remove the article along with the header or controls.
- A table or image breaks awkwardly: Test the actual long content in preview. Break-avoidance rules are useful hints, not a guarantee that oversized content can fit on one sheet.
- Colors look different or vanish: Make sure meaning does not rely on color alone. Users and browsers may alter print colors;
print-color-adjust: exactonly requests preservation. - Margins or paper size differ from the CSS: Check the print dialog and preview as well as
@page. The final paged output depends on the browser and the user’s print choices.
