To create an Open Graph image, design a landscape graphic, publish it at a URL social platforms can fetch, and add that image URL to the page’s Open Graph metadata. A practical starting canvas is 1200 × 630 pixels, but platform specifications differ; check the current requirements for the services where you share.
Choose an image size and format
A 1200 × 630-pixel canvas (about a 1.91:1 ratio) is a useful general starting point, not a guarantee that every platform will display the image without cropping. The July 2026 guide from OG Image Design recommends those dimensions. LinkedIn’s Help guidance specifies a minimum of 1200 × 627 pixels, recommends a 1.91:1 ratio, and lists a 5 MB maximum and JPG, PNG, or GIF formats. LinkedIn marks that page as last updated two years before October 3, 2026, so verify it before relying on it as a current specification: LinkedIn Help: image specifications for sharing.

For other destinations, consult their current official guidance if exact compliance matters. The available sources do not establish current official X image limits, so do not assume LinkedIn’s requirements apply to X.
Design for a compact preview
Social previews can appear much smaller than the original image. Make the subject or title easy to recognize at reduced size, and keep essential text and logos away from the edges, where layouts may crop or overlay content. There is no established universal safe-area measurement for every platform.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Keep the design focused: use a clear visual hierarchy, strong contrast, and only the words a reader needs to identify the page. Before publishing, inspect the image at thumbnail scale as well as full size.
Publish the image where crawlers can reach it
Upload the finished file to a stable, publicly accessible URL and use that full URL in the metadata. The social platform needs to retrieve the image to build a preview. LinkedIn warns that its image may not display if a site blocks LinkedIn from fetching it or stores the file in a protected directory. Avoid access controls or delivery rules that prevent the relevant platform crawler from requesting the image.

Add Open Graph metadata to the page
Open Graph metadata belongs in the HTML document’s <head>. The protocol’s core properties include og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url; LinkedIn’s sharing guidance also identifies title, image, description, and URL. See the Open Graph protocol for the property model.

<head>
<meta property="og:title" content="A clear title for this page">
<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/page-share.jpg">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page/">
<meta property="og:description" content="A concise description of the page.">
</head>
Use the canonical page URL for og:url, and make sure og:image points to the exact file you intend to share. If your CMS or framework generates metadata, set these values in its page-level SEO or social-sharing fields rather than adding conflicting duplicate tags by hand.
Verify the published share preview
- Open the published page source or inspect its rendered head. Confirm that the Open Graph tags are present on the live URL, not only in a local preview or editor.
- Check each value. Ensure the title and description are correct,
og:urlis the intended canonical URL, andog:imageis an absolute URL to the new image. - Check image access. Load the image URL directly and confirm it is not behind a login, protected directory, or blocking rule that prevents the destination platform from retrieving it.
- Preview the actual page on the platforms you use. A correct image file alone does not prove the metadata or platform preview is correct.
- If an old image remains, account for caching. Recheck the metadata and crawler access first, then use the destination platform’s current refresh or debugging facility when available.
When to use one image or platform-specific versions
A single landscape image is easier to maintain, while separate versions can better suit platforms with different dimensions, crop behavior, or metadata needs. Decide based on the destination’s current requirements and the way its preview appears—not on an assumed universal specification.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect preview
- The image does not appear: Confirm the live page includes
og:imageand that its full URL returns the image. Check that the platform crawler is not blocked and that the image is not in a protected location. - The preview shows an older image: Verify the tag points to the new file and check whether the platform is showing a cached preview. Use its current refresh or debugging tool if available.
- The wrong page or image appears: Compare
og:urlwith the intended canonical page URL and inspect the rendered metadata for duplicate or conflicting tags. - The image is cropped or hard to read: Review the platform’s current dimensions and ratio guidance, then test the graphic at the size of the actual preview. Do not assume a single margin or crop rule applies everywhere.
- LinkedIn rejects or omits the image: Check the file against LinkedIn’s published minimum dimensions, listed file-size maximum and accepted formats, while keeping in mind that its cited guidance may have changed since its stated update.
