Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo keep ransomware from encrypting a backup, make a copy on encrypted removable storage, then disconnect it when the backup finishes. A backup left plugged into an infected computer—or synced automatically through an account ransomware can reach—may be damaged along with the original files. CISA recommends keeping offline, encrypted backups and regularly testing that they can be restored.
What “offline” means for a ransomware backup
Offline means the backup is inaccessible to the systems ransomware can reach. For an external hard drive, that usually means connecting it only to run a backup and unplugging it afterward. CISA warns that an attached drive may be accessible to malware, which could delete or corrupt its contents: CISA’s device data-protection guidance.

Encryption and isolation address different risks. Encryption helps protect the confidentiality of data if the drive is lost or stolen; isolation limits ransomware’s ability to alter or erase the backup. CISA recommends both for backup copies in its #StopRansomware Guide.
Choose what to back up and how to recover it
Prioritize the files and systems that matter
Decide what you would need first after losing access to a computer or business system, then set a recovery order. A home user might prioritize documents, photographs, and account or device recovery information. An organization may also need system images, software, configuration, and license details to rebuild critical services. CISA advises prioritizing critical services and maintaining resources such as suitable system images for recovery.

Pick a backup interval based on acceptable data loss
Choose how often to make a copy according to how much recent work you could afford to lose. CISA advises backing up often and testing regularly, but its cited guidance does not prescribe a single schedule for all users. A backup cadence should reflect how often your important data changes and how quickly you could repeat the backup.
Set up a disconnected external-drive backup
- Choose dedicated removable storage. Select an external hard drive with enough capacity for the data you intend to protect. The drive is a storage destination, not protection by itself.
- Enable encryption. Encrypt the backup drive or backup data. Keep recovery-key information somewhere separate from the drive, and ensure the people responsible for recovery can obtain it if the computer is unavailable.
- Run the backup. Connect the drive, make the backup, and confirm the backup job finishes. A “success” message is useful, but it does not prove the data can be restored.
- Disconnect the drive. Unplug it once the backup is complete. Do not leave it attached as an always-available disk; CISA specifically warns that a connected external drive can be exposed to ransomware.
- Store it securely. Keep the disconnected drive somewhere safe and, where practical, separate from the computer it backs up. A second drive rotated to another location can help protect against events such as theft or fire affecting both devices.
Add another recovery copy when practical
A single disconnected drive protects against some online attacks, but it can still fail, be stolen, or be lost in a local disaster. If feasible, maintain another recoverable copy on separate media or in a separate location. A second drive kept disconnected between backup runs is one option.

An isolated cloud backup can provide geographic separation, but verify how the service handles versions, deleted files, retention, and account recovery. CISA warns that automated cloud backup may be insufficient if encrypted local files sync and overwrite unaffected cloud files. Ordinary synchronization is not the same as a protected recovery copy: check whether you can restore an earlier version and whether an attacker using your normal account could delete the backup.

Some cloud services offer immutable storage or deletion protections, but those controls need correct configuration and a tested recovery path. CISA notes that immutable-storage choices may bring cost or compliance trade-offs. Consider whether compromised computers or credentials could reach and delete the copy, whether recovery is possible without the usual account or network, and what happens if a provider or account becomes unavailable.

Prove the backup can be restored
Test recovery, not just the backup job. CISA recommends regularly testing backup availability and integrity in a disaster-recovery scenario.
- Restore representative files to a safe location and check that they open and contain the expected information.
- For an organization, periodically rehearse recovery of critical systems or workloads in a clean environment.
- Record the recovery steps and the time they take; update them when hardware, software, or data changes.
- Confirm authorized people can retrieve the encryption key and any credentials needed for recovery.
Recover safely if ransomware strikes
Do not connect an offline backup drive to a computer that may still be compromised. Follow your incident-response plan, establish clean recovery systems, and restore in the order needed to bring critical services back. CISA’s ransomware guidance emphasizes avoiding reinfection during recovery.

Common failures are preventable: an attached drive remains reachable, a sync service may replicate encryption or deletion, and a completed backup job may still produce files that cannot be restored. Disconnection, version protection, and hands-on restore tests address these different failure modes; none turns a storage device into a guarantee against ransomware.
