Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To capture mobile website screenshots at multiple device pixel ratios (DPRs), keep the CSS viewport fixed, change the emulated DPR, and save a separate image for each setting. Use Chrome DevTools for a few manual captures or Playwright to generate a repeatable set. Choose screenshot scaling deliberately: CSS scaling produces roughly one image pixel per CSS pixel, while device scaling produces roughly one image pixel per emulated device pixel.
Viewport size and DPR control different things
The viewport is the page’s layout area, measured in CSS pixels. DPR describes the ratio of physical display pixels to CSS pixels. In an emulated capture, changing viewport width can change responsive layout and trigger different breakpoints; changing DPR changes the emulated pixel density. To isolate the effect of DPR, hold the viewport dimensions constant while varying DPR.

Screenshot output scale is a separate choice. With device scaling, a 390-CSS-pixel-wide viewport at DPR 2 ordinarily produces an image about 780 pixels wide. With CSS scaling, that same viewport produces an image about 390 pixels wide. Browser rounding and capture details can affect exact dimensions. Chrome’s device-mode guide explains viewport and DPR emulation.
Capture a few screenshots in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome, open DevTools, and toggle the Device Toolbar.
- Select Responsive for custom dimensions or choose a device preset. Enter the target width and height in CSS pixels.
- Open More options → Add device pixel ratio if the DPR control is not visible, then select the desired DPR. Add or select a different DPR for each capture while leaving the viewport unchanged.
- If needed, set the mobile device type to simulate mobile rendering and touch events. This remains emulation, not a physical-phone test.
- Choose More options → Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the full page. A device frame is optional and adds presentation context; it does not change the page’s CSS layout.
- Name files with the page, dimensions, DPR, browser, and orientation, such as
home-390x844-dpr2-chromium-portrait.png.
Device presets are convenient starting points, not a universal device coverage plan. Choose widths that exercise your site’s breakpoints and DPR values that serve your review or test matrix.

Generate a repeatable DPR set with Playwright
For repeated captures, create a fresh browser context for each viewport/DPR combination. Install Playwright, set url to the page to capture, and run this JavaScript with a Playwright browser instance. The sample uses Chromium, a 390 × 844 CSS-pixel viewport, and DPR values 1, 2, and 3.
const url = 'https://example.com';
for (const dpr of [1, 2, 3]) {
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 390, height: 844 },
deviceScaleFactor: dpr,
isMobile: true,
hasTouch: true,
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({
path: `mobile-390x844-dpr${dpr}.png`,
scale: 'device',
});
await context.close();
}
Here, browser is an already-launched Playwright browser. A new context applies the emulation settings independently for each run. The networkidle wait is a useful starting point, but pages with long-lived network activity or delayed content may need an explicit readiness condition, such as waiting for a key selector. Playwright’s emulation documentation describes context parameters and device descriptors.

Pick the right screenshot dimensions
- Use
scale: 'device'when you need output at the emulated device-pixel scale. At DPR 2, image dimensions are ordinarily about twice the CSS viewport dimensions. - Use
scale: 'css'when the artifact should stay approximately the viewport’s CSS-pixel dimensions regardless of DPR. - Add
fullPage: truewhen the deliverable needs the entire scrollable page. Long full-page images can become unusually tall and may differ from a page captured during ordinary scrolling. - Use device descriptors when their viewport, user agent, and touch settings fit the target. For a controlled DPR matrix, configure or override the values explicitly.
For example, change the loop to for (const dpr of [1, 2, 3]) to capture three densities at one viewport. To test layout breakpoints as well, iterate over viewport widths separately; otherwise, changing both width and DPR at once makes it harder to tell what caused a visual difference.
Make captures useful for visual review
Wait for meaningful content—not merely an arbitrary delay. Confirm that web fonts and images have loaded, use a stable scroll position, and control animation, caret blinking, timestamps, rotating content, and other volatile elements. Playwright’s screenshot options include controls for caret display and styles that can suppress dynamic elements; make sure any injected style does not hide content you need to inspect. See the Playwright screenshot parameters.

Record the browser and version, operating system, viewport, DPR, orientation, screenshot scale, full-page setting, and relevant emulation flags with each image. Keep baseline generation and comparison runs in the same environment. Playwright notes that output can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; differences in font rasterization or antialiasing may otherwise look like page changes. Its visual comparison guidance covers consistent baselines and screenshot styling.
Know what mobile emulation can establish
Chrome describes Device mode as a “first-order approximation” of the mobile experience and says it does not actually run the code on a mobile device. Emulated captures are useful for responsive layout checks and repeatable DPR-specific images, but they do not establish handset-specific rendering, real-device performance, or every platform’s touch and browser behavior. Validate those questions on physical devices.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of these steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The image has the wrong width. Check both
deviceScaleFactorand screenshotscale. Device scaling produces output at the emulated device-pixel scale; CSS scaling keeps output near CSS-pixel dimensions. - The layout changed between DPR captures. Keep viewport dimensions, mobile flags, page state, and browser environment identical while changing only DPR. If the layout still changes, inspect scripts or styles that respond to resolution or DPR.
- Fonts, images, or other content are missing. Replace a short fixed delay with a wait for the relevant selector or content-ready condition. Confirm font and image loading before capture.
- The page never reaches network idle. Some pages keep connections open or continually fetch data. Wait for a meaningful selector or application-specific readiness signal instead of relying on network idle alone.
- Full-page output is unexpectedly tall or differs from scrolling. Confirm whether the deliverable needs
fullPage: true; inspect long-page captures because full-page behavior can differ from ordinary scrolling. - Visual comparisons show noise without a page change. Standardize the browser version, OS, headless setting, and other environment details. Freeze or hide only genuinely volatile elements, and keep the baseline and comparison runs in the same environment.
- The screenshot does not match an actual phone. Treat DevTools and Playwright mobile settings as emulation. Reproduce the issue on a physical handset when hardware, browser-platform behavior, or touch interaction matters.
