Gmail lets a personal @gmail.com account receive mail at practically unlimited +tag variations, all in one inbox. For example, [email protected] and [email protected] route to [email protected]. No alias has to be created in Settings.
These variations are useful for sorting mail and identifying address leaks, but they are not separate Google Accounts, private masked addresses, or independently managed mailboxes. Google documents this behavior and related filtering options in its Gmail alias instructions.
The fastest method: add a plus tag
Take your normal Gmail username, add a plus sign and any useful text before @gmail.com:
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
- Start with your ordinary Gmail address.
- Insert
+after the username. - Add a meaningful or random tag.
- Leave the
@gmail.comdomain unchanged. - Use that address when signing up for a site or newsletter.
There is no “Create alias” button for each tag. Gmail routes the address automatically to the original mailbox. The variations share the same password, storage, recovery details, inbox and Google identity.

Automatically organize each alias with filters
Filters turn tags into an address-based filing system. First send yourself a test message, then confirm which recipient address Gmail displays; mail clients and message formats do not always expose the address identically.
- Open the test message in Gmail.
- Use the message’s More menu and choose Filter messages like these (or open Gmail’s search options and create a filter).
- Check the recipient or To value and keep the exact alias.
- Select actions such as applying a label, archiving, marking as read, starring, forwarding or deleting.
- Save the filter and send another test message.
| Use case | Alias | Possible action |
|---|---|---|
| Newsletters | [email protected] |
Apply “Newsletters” and skip the inbox |
| Shopping | [email protected] |
Apply “Shopping” |
| Free trials | [email protected] |
Apply “Trials”; delete later if appropriate |
| One event | [email protected] |
Label and archive |
Filtering is routing inside one mailbox, not creation of new mailboxes. Google specifically recommends alias-directed filters for labels and other automatic actions (Gmail help).
Dotted Gmail addresses are another form of the same inbox
For a personal @gmail.com address, Gmail ignores periods in the username. These all deliver to the same account:

Google says dotted versions cannot be claimed by another person and are not separate accounts (dotted Gmail addresses). They can occasionally help when a form rejects plus signs, but they are not private and a website may normalize them too. The rule does not generally apply to Google Workspace addresses on custom domains, where dots can matter.

What “infinite” does—and does not—mean
| Method | Unlimited? | Separate inbox? | Hides base address? | Disable one address? | Send from it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Personal Gmail +tag |
Practically unlimited receiving variations | No | No | No; filter matching mail | Not as a normal independent identity |
| Dotted personal Gmail form | Many spellings | No | No | No | No distinct identity |
| Google Workspace alias | No; 30 documented per user at no extra cost | No | Uses your custom domain | Administrator removes it | Yes, after configuration |
| Forwarding service | Often unlimited on paid plans | No; forwards to a mailbox | Usually | Usually | Often, depending on plan |
| Separate Gmail account | Limited by account creation and management | Yes | Yes, from other recipients | Yes, by account | Yes |
- A plus or dotted address is not a new Google Account and cannot provide a separate Drive, YouTube or recovery identity.
- It does not reliably create a second registration for a service that detects the underlying mailbox.
- It is not anonymous: recipients can see the full address, including a descriptive tag.
- There is no individual alias object to revoke. You can filter, archive or delete its messages, but the routing convention still exists.
Can you send mail from a plus alias?
Receiving mail at [email protected] is different from configuring a visible From identity. Gmail’s Send mail as feature requires an address you own and, in many cases, ownership verification. Google documents up to 99 configured send-from addresses; that number is not a limit on plus tags.
For a custom-domain Workspace alias, an administrator creates the alias and you then configure the From address in Gmail. Organizations automating this can use Gmail API settings.sendAs; some identities remain pending until verified (Gmail API documentation).
Google says that beginning in January 2027, Gmail will stop supporting “Send as” for third-party addresses such as Yahoo or Outlook. That announced change does not end personal Gmail plus-addressing or Workspace aliases. Check Google’s current guidance as the date approaches.
Why a website may reject a Gmail alias
The plus sign is valid email syntax, but individual services may use simplistic validation, anti-abuse rules or address normalization. You may see an invalid-address error, have the site strip the tag, receive no confirmation, or find that password recovery treats the address inconsistently.

- Try a dotted form if that particular site accepts it, while remembering it is the same account.
- Use a separate Gmail account when a genuinely distinct Google identity is required.
- Use a custom-domain alias or a dedicated forwarding provider.
Never treat aliases as a way to evade a platform’s duplicate-account rules. Multiple tags still resolve to one underlying Gmail account.
If confirmation mail is missing
- Check Spam and verify every character of the address.
- Try a simple suffix such as
+testwithout unusual punctuation. - Send a message from another account to confirm that Gmail receives the variation.
If a filter misses messages
Open a received message and inspect the exact To value Gmail shows, then rebuild the filter using that value. Test from a second sender before relying on the rule.

Google Workspace aliases
Workspace is suited to stable professional addresses such as [email protected] and [email protected]. Google documents up to 30 aliases per user at no additional cost; aliases deliver to the primary inbox, belong to only one user and cannot sign in to Google services. More addresses require additional accounts under Google’s current documentation (Workspace Admin Help).
SimpleLogin
SimpleLogin supplies random forwarding aliases that can be disabled, replied from and separated from your visible Gmail address. Its pricing page showed, on August 18, 2026, a free tier with 10 aliases and Premium at $36 per year or $4 billed monthly; Premium included unlimited aliases, custom and catch-all domains, replies, initiating messages and multiple mailboxes. Prices can change, so verify the official pricing page. Its FAQ explains why a managed alias differs from Gmail plus-addressing.

Proton Pass or Proton Mail
Proton’s hide-my-email aliases are designed for privacy and can be deactivated; paid plans provide higher or unlimited allowances depending on the plan. Proton documentation covers alias behavior at its support page. Current Mail plan details are shown at Proton’s pricing page, which can vary by billing period and location. Proton is the better fit when aliases belong alongside encrypted mail, a password manager, VPN or storage.
Custom-domain catch-all forwarding
With a domain you control and a catch-all routing provider, addresses such as [email protected] or [email protected] can be invented on demand. This is genuine domain-level routing, not a Gmail account feature. SimpleLogin lists catch-all and wildcard domains among its Premium features.
Quick Recap
Choose the right approach
- Sorting only: use Gmail
+tagaddresses and filters. - A site rejects plus signs: try a dotted form, recognizing its limitations.
- Professional custom-domain roles: use Workspace aliases.
- Privacy, reply-from support or revocation: use a managed forwarding service such as SimpleLogin or a qualifying Proton plan.
- A completely separate Google identity: create another Google Account.
