What DecentHolograms does
DecentHolograms is a Minecraft server plugin for floating text displays. It lets you place named holograms in the world, change their lines, move or delete them, and organize content into pages in supported hologram types. Static instructions, rules, directions and event notices do not require any companion plugin. Live values, such as player statistics, require PlaceholderAPI in addition to DecentHolograms.

Command names have changed or been presented differently across DecentHolograms versions. Documentation and third-party examples show /dh h create, /dh create and /dh hologram create, while the wiki also lists a display-oriented form. Treat the examples below as a starting point: type /dh and use the in-game tab completion, or check the command list for the exact build installed on your server. A command that is valid on one release can be rejected on another even though the underlying feature is the same.

Before you install
Check the Minecraft and plugin versions
Download a DecentHolograms build that explicitly supports the Minecraft version used by the server. Do not assume that a jar made for one server version will work unchanged on another. If the plugin does not support the server version, fix that compatibility issue before troubleshooting commands.
Make sure you can restart the server
Installing a plugin requires a restart. Have console or hosting-panel access, and schedule the change when a restart will not interrupt players unexpectedly. Back up the server before installing or changing a plugin if the world is important to you.
Decide which hologram style you need
DecentHolograms supports Armor Stand holograms and Display Entity holograms. Armor Stand holograms expose more line-type options. Display Entity holograms are limited to the display type selected when they are created. Choose deliberately if you need specialized line behavior; otherwise, use the type offered by your version’s create command and verify the result in game.
Install DecentHolograms
- Stop the server. Use the server console or your hosting panel’s stop control rather than replacing a plugin jar while the server is running.
- Place the jar in the plugin directory. Upload the DecentHolograms jar to the server’s
plugins/folder. On a hosting panel, the equivalent workflow is usually the panel’s Plugins tab followed by an installation action. - Start the server. Allow the server to complete its startup sequence. A restart is required for the plugin to load.
- Read the startup log. Look for a successful DecentHolograms loaded or enabled message. If the plugin is reported as disabled, missing or incompatible, resolve that startup error before trying commands.
- Confirm the files were created. A successful first start should create a DecentHolograms data directory. Its configuration file is
plugins/DecentHolograms/config.yml.
If you install through a hosting panel, panel labels differ by provider. The important checks are the same: install the jar through the panel, restart the server, and confirm in the console that DecentHolograms enabled successfully.
Create your first hologram
Use your current position
Go to the world and stand exactly where the hologram should appear. The basic create command places the hologram at the executor’s current location, so your height and facing position matter. If the text appears too high, too low or inside a block, move the hologram after creation or recreate it at a better spot.

- Choose a unique hologram name without spaces, following the naming rules shown by tab completion.
- Run the create command exposed by your installation. A commonly documented form is
/dh h create <name>. - If your build presents the display command, use
/dh displays create <type> <name>and select the display type offered by tab completion. - Optionally add text after the name to set the first line. If you omit the text, DecentHolograms uses the default text configured in
config.yml. - Look at the location from normal player distance and verify that the hologram is visible to the intended audience.
For example, the shape of the command is /dh h create welcome, followed by optional text if your version accepts it. Do not copy a command blindly if tab completion shows a different argument order; complete the command interactively and use the syntax your server advertises.

Some documented command variants accept a location argument in the form -l:<world>:<x>:<y>:<z>. A --center flag is also reported for centering a hologram on a block. These options are version-dependent. If tab completion does not offer them, create the hologram at your own position and use the move command instead of guessing the syntax.
Set and add hologram lines
After creation, edit the text rather than deleting and recreating the hologram. DecentHolograms documents separate line operations:

Line numbering and quoting rules can vary by release. If a line containing spaces is split into multiple arguments or a command is rejected, use the syntax displayed by /dh line help. Test edits on a temporary hologram before changing a large information board.
Plan the visual order
Put the title or purpose on the first line, then supporting instructions, costs, times or commands below it. Add one line at a time and view the result from the distance at which players will read it. A short line is easier to scan than a paragraph floating over a busy area.

Move, delete and organize holograms
Move an existing hologram
The command list and hosting guides show a move action in the form /dh move <name>. In versions that support it, run the command while standing at the new location. If your build asks for coordinates or uses a different subcommand, accept the form supplied by tab completion.
Delete an unwanted hologram
Deletion is listed as /dh hologram delete <name> in third-party command examples, while the wiki’s command list also includes a delete operation. Because aliases differ, begin typing /dh and select the delete subcommand your server offers. Confirm the name carefully; deleting the wrong named hologram may remove a board that players rely on.
Use pages for switchable sections
Pages let one hologram hold sections that can be switched or displayed separately. They are useful when a board needs multiple informational views rather than one long stack of lines. Pages are not available for Display Entity holograms, so use an Armor Stand hologram when page functionality is required.
Choose between Armor Stand and Display Entity holograms

The exact type names and argument order are version-sensitive. Let the create command’s tab completion identify valid values. If a feature works with Armor Stand holograms but not with a Display Entity hologram, that difference may be an intentional limitation rather than a configuration error.
Add dynamic text with PlaceholderAPI
Static text works with DecentHolograms alone. To show changing values such as player statistics, install PlaceholderAPI as an additional plugin and use the placeholder syntax supported by the relevant expansion. DecentHolograms can then render the resolved value in a line.

- Install a PlaceholderAPI build compatible with the server and restart as required by your hosting setup.
- Install the PlaceholderAPI expansion that supplies the value you want to display.
- Create or edit a DecentHolograms line with the placeholder supplied by that expansion.
- Test with a real player and confirm that the value changes when the underlying statistic changes.
If a placeholder remains visible as literal text, check that PlaceholderAPI is enabled, the required expansion is installed, and the placeholder spelling matches the expansion documentation. A static welcome message does not need PlaceholderAPI, so do not add the dependency unless you need live data.

Change the default text
DecentHolograms stores settings in plugins/DecentHolograms/config.yml. When a create command omits optional text, the plugin uses the default text from this file. Edit configuration only while the server is stopped or follow the plugin’s documented reload procedure; then restart or reload exactly as the documentation for your version requires. Keep a backup of the file before changing it.
Grant administration access
The official permission summary identifies decentholograms.admin as granting all DecentHolograms administration permissions. Give it only to trusted staff through your permissions manager. If you want a narrower role, inspect the permission nodes documented for your installed version instead of assuming that the admin node is granular.

Players who only need to read holograms do not need administrative permission. Reserve creation, editing, moving and deletion rights for staff who maintain the server’s information boards. After assigning a permission, log in as the affected role and test one harmless command to verify that the node is applied as intended.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The command is unknown
Confirm that DecentHolograms enabled in the startup log and that you are running the command on the server where the plugin is installed. Then type /dh and use tab completion. Try the alias exposed by your release rather than switching randomly between /dh h create, /dh create and /dh hologram create.
The hologram does not appear
- Check that you created it in the intended world and at the intended height.
- Move closer and look from several angles; a line can be hidden inside a block or behind another object.
- Confirm that the plugin loaded without an error and that the hologram name was accepted.
- If you used a coordinate or centering flag, remove that option and create a test hologram at your current position.
Only the default text appears
The create command may have interpreted your input as a name without an optional text argument. Edit the first line with the set operation shown by /dh line help, or recreate a test hologram using the exact argument order offered by tab completion.
A line-edit command fails
Run /dh line help and copy the argument order for your version. Check the line number, quote text containing spaces if the command syntax requires it, and make sure you are editing the correct hologram name.

Dynamic values do not update
Verify that PlaceholderAPI is installed and enabled, that the required expansion is present, and that the placeholder belongs to that expansion. Test the same placeholder with a known working player before changing DecentHolograms settings.
A staff member lacks access
Check that the permission manager assigned decentholograms.admin to the correct group or user, that the player reconnected after the change if required by the permissions system, and that no more specific deny rule overrides it. Consult the permission list for your DecentHolograms version if you need a limited permission rather than full administration.
A safe first-hologram workflow
- Confirm Minecraft-version compatibility and back up the server.
- Stop the server, install the DecentHolograms jar in
plugins/(or through the hosting panel’s Plugins tab), start the server and verify the enabled message. - Stand in a quiet test area and create a uniquely named hologram using tab completion.
- Set the first line, then append additional lines with the line commands exposed by your build.
- Test visibility from the player approach path and move the hologram if its height or location is wrong.
- Choose Armor Stand if you need pages or more line-type options; choose Display Entity only when its selected type meets your requirements.
- Add PlaceholderAPI only for dynamic values, and test those placeholders with a real player.
- Change defaults in
plugins/DecentHolograms/config.ymlonly after saving a backup, and restrict administration permissions to trusted staff.
This workflow keeps version-dependent syntax contained to the points where it matters: creation, line editing, movement and deletion. The server’s tab completion and the DecentHolograms wiki remain the authority for the exact command grammar exposed by your installed release.
