1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo make embroidered merch that works in thread, start with a product and placement, simplify your artwork, have it digitized for that specific use, inspect the stitch preview, and order a physical sample before you sell it. Embroidery is not simply a picture printed onto fabric: the artwork must be translated into stitch types, paths, density, and thread colors.
1. Choose a product and embroidery placement
Begin with one or two items your audience might actually wear or use, such as a cap, hoodie, shirt, bag, or patch. Decide where the design should sit and how much space it needs. Product shape and the available embroidery area constrain the artwork, so start from the selected product’s template rather than designing at an arbitrary size.

A patch can be a useful format when the artwork suits a self-contained emblem. Printify lists embroidered apparel, hats, bags, and accessories; DigitEMB describes custom patches made from creator artwork. Those options establish possible product directions, not a guarantee that a particular design will sell.
2. Prepare artwork so it reads in thread
Use a bold, simplified version of your logo or illustration. Prefer clear silhouettes, sturdy lettering, and visible separation between neighboring shapes. Remove hairline details and tiny text, and keep the color count within the technique and provider’s limits. Standard embroidery on Printful, for example, uses up to six thread colors from its available palette; other techniques and eligible products differ.

Provider measurements are specifications, not universal rules
For flat and unlimited embroidery, Printful’s stated minimums are 0.25 inches (about 6.35 mm) for text height, 0.05 inches (about 1.27 mm) for line thickness, and 0.25 inches (about 6.35 mm) for negative space. Printify also states minimums of 0.25 inches for text height and 0.05 inches for line thickness. These are provider-specific requirements, not universal embroidery standards. Requirements can differ by product and technique; Printful’s 3D puff guidance, for example, calls for simpler, bolder artwork and has different line and gap values. Check the current requirements for the exact product, placement, and embroidery type you plan to use.
Match stitch approach to the artwork
Stitch choice changes how the design is rendered. Printful’s file guidance describes run stitch for line detail, satin stitch for outlines, and tatami fill for larger areas. Those descriptions can help you discuss the design with a digitizer, but the appropriate stitch plan depends on the design and product.

3. Have the design digitized for its use
Digitization converts ordinary image artwork, such as a PNG or JPEG, into a stitch file: production instructions specifying elements such as stitch type, density, thread paths, and color mapping. It is not just saving the image in another file format.
Do not assume one digitized file will work unchanged on every garment, size, placement, or embroidery technique. Printful says a design may need separate digitization depending on technique, product type, or placement. Printify describes digitization in relation to the combination of design, product type, and size. Before building a wide product range, ask the provider whether the file can be reused and what changes require a new or adjusted file.

4. Choose how to make and fulfill the merch
Print-on-demand fulfillment
Printful and Printify document workflows in which you choose an embroidery-ready item, upload or create artwork, and either order a product or publish it through a connected shop for fulfillment. This route can avoid holding inventory, but the exact catalog, integrations, fulfillment locations, costs, shipping estimates, and terms should be checked for the products and destinations you intend to serve.
A local embroidery shop or bulk supplier
A local shop can be an alternative when you want direct discussion about materials, placement, sampling, or a larger run. Ask for a quote and a sample made with your actual artwork and garment. Available information here does not establish local-shop prices, minimum order quantities, or comparative quality, so do not assume a bulk order will cost less overall.

A mockup is useful for showing approximate placement, but it cannot establish how the finished thread will look. Thread thickness, available colors, texture, and digitization all affect the result. Printful notes that its preview may differ from the final product and recommends samples; Printify likewise advises ordering a sample because its preview may not match the finished item.

6. Set a price and create an accurate listing
Work out the landed cost for the exact product and destination, including the relevant production and shipping charges, then compare it with your intended retail price and required margin. Costs and fulfillment terms can change, so use current product-specific information rather than relying on a general estimate.
Describe the garment, embroidery location, colors, and care information using details supplied for that product. Do not promise exact color matching or durability based only on a digital preview. If you recommend a provider through an affiliate link, or endorse a sample you received free or at a discount, disclose that relationship clearly. The Federal Trade Commission’s staff guidance, Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers, says: “If you endorse a product or service through social media, your endorsement message should make it obvious when you have a relationship – a ‘material connection’ – with the brand.” That is U.S. guidance; creators should also check the rules that apply in their own jurisdiction and on their platform.
How to compare production options
Compare specific products and current terms rather than choosing on a provider name alone.
| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Design constraints | What are the embroidery area, minimum text, line and gap dimensions, available colors, and supported techniques for this product? |
| Digitization | Does the provider handle it, what does it cost, which files can be reused, and does changing the product, placement, or size require a new or adjusted file? |
| Sampling and review | Can you order one sample and inspect the actual embroidered item before listing it? |
| Product and sales route | Which products, store connections, fulfillment locations, production and shipping estimates, and current terms fit your needs? |
| Order economics | What is the current landed cost for the exact product and delivery destination, and does your intended retail price leave the margin you need? |
