To create a coupon in a WordPress store, enable coupons in WooCommerce, then add and configure one under Marketing > Coupons. In a Dokan marketplace, vendors can create coupons for their own stores, while marketplace administrators can create coupons for selected vendors or products. The right setup depends on who controls the offer—and who pays for the discount.
How WooCommerce coupons work
WooCommerce provides the basic coupon controls for a store: a code, a discount type, usage restrictions and usage limits. Customers enter the code in the cart or at checkout; standard WooCommerce coupons do not automatically apply themselves. For the core workflow, see the WooCommerce coupon management guide.

Create a coupon in WooCommerce
- Enable coupons: In the WordPress dashboard, go to WooCommerce > Settings > General, enable coupon use, and save your changes. Coupons will not work if this setting is off.
- Open the coupon editor: Go to Marketing > Coupons and select Add new coupon.
- Set the code: Enter a code customers can use, or use the generate-code control. WooCommerce coupon codes are not case-sensitive.
- Choose the discount: Select one of WooCommerce’s core types: percentage discount, fixed-cart discount or fixed-product discount. Set the amount and use the restriction and limit settings to define which purchases qualify and how often the coupon can be used.
- Publish or schedule it: Publish the coupon when it is ready. If it should become available later, WooCommerce documents scheduling it through the Publish settings.
- Tell customers where to use it: Share the code and direct shoppers to enter it in the cart or at checkout.
Create a coupon as a Dokan vendor
A vendor coupon is intended for that vendor’s own store. Before using this route, make sure coupons are enabled in WooCommerce > Settings > General and save the setting. Dokan’s vendor coupon guide describes the vendor-side process:

- Select Add New Coupon.
- Complete the coupon details and add the coupon.
This is separate from the marketplace administrator’s coupon workflow. An admin-created coupon can target marketplace vendors or products, with additional controls over how the promotion is handled.

Create a coupon as a Dokan marketplace administrator
Dokan’s admin guide to creating coupons for vendors starts at WP-Admin > Marketing > Coupons. Alongside the usual WooCommerce coupon settings, the guide describes Vendor Limits controls for applying a coupon to all vendors, selecting particular vendors or products, or excluding them. It also describes options for where the coupon cost is deducted, whether vendors are notified, and whether the offer appears on store pages.
Decide who funds the discount
Check the deduction setting before publishing: it can affect marketplace commission and vendor earnings. Dokan’s admin guide gives an example in which a deduction larger than the available commission leaves a shortfall that flows to vendor earnings. Dokan’s vendor coupon documentation states, “Beginning with Dokan 4.0 the coupon engine has been rebuilt so that marketplace-wide or product-level discounts created by the Admin never eat into a vendor’s expected earnings.” Read that version-qualified statement together with the admin guide’s deduction examples and the rules configured on your marketplace; do not assume every coupon setup has the same financial effect.

Check multi-vendor cart behavior
Dokan’s admin guide says fixed-cart discounts are not applicable for multiple vendors. If shoppers can buy from more than one vendor in a cart, check how the coupon behaves for your marketplace before advertising that offer.

The scope and cost allocation depend on the coupon settings and marketplace configuration; the table describes the roles and options documented by WooCommerce and Dokan, not a universal accounting rule. WooCommerce core is enough for standard percentage and fixed discounts. Dokan adds vendor and marketplace-admin workflows when a marketplace needs vendor-level targeting.

When an extension may help
Basic coupons do not require an extension. If you need bulk code generation, automatic application or shareable coupon links, WooCommerce’s Smart Coupons documentation describes those capabilities. Its bulk-generation guide says generated codes can be added to the store, exported to CSV or emailed to recipients. These are extension features, not part of the basic WooCommerce coupon flow; check the extension listing for current availability and terms.
