The link opens a connection page without requiring Azure portal access; it does not authenticate the recipient to the VM.
What an Azure Bastion shareable link does
Azure Bastion is a managed service for connecting to Azure virtual machines over RDP or SSH. A shareable link opens a browser connection flow for a selected VM or virtual machine scale set without requiring the recipient to sign in to the Azure portal. The recipient still needs the VM’s username and password or other required sign-in method, such as a private key. Microsoft Learn puts it plainly: “The shareable link doesn’t contain any credentials – the admin must provide sign-in credentials to the user.” See Microsoft’s shareable-link documentation and its Azure Bastion overview.

Check eligibility before creating a link
- Bastion SKU: Shareable Links require Standard or Premium. Basic and Developer do not include the feature. Microsoft’s SKU comparison lists the available capabilities.
- Target: The resource must be an Azure VM or VM scale set in the Bastion virtual network or a directly peered virtual network.
- Unsupported network cases: Shareable Links are not supported over Virtual WAN, across peered virtual networks in different tenants, or for on-premises and other non-Azure VMs or VM scale sets.
- Permissions: Bastion resource IAM governs who can view, create, or delete links. By default, organization users have read access to shared links, which permits viewing and use but not creation or deletion. Assign only the actions users need.
Enable Shareable Link and create a connection
- In the Azure portal, open the Bastion resource and select Configuration.
- Confirm the SKU is Standard or Premium. If needed, change it to Standard, turn on Shareable Link, and apply the configuration. Microsoft estimates the Bastion host update takes about 10 minutes.
- Open Shareable links and select Add.
- Choose the subscription, resource group, and target VM or VM scale set. You can select individual resources or all eligible resources; Azure creates a separate link for each selected target.
- Set the link’s expiration date and time, apply the change, and copy the generated link. Once it expires, it can no longer connect.
- Send the link and the target’s sign-in credentials separately using an appropriate secure channel. Avoid sending credentials in the same message or channel as the link when practical.
The connection flow supports custom ports and protocols, according to Microsoft’s setup instructions.

Manage links and access safely
A shareable link removes the need for Azure portal access; it does not replace VM authentication or Bastion IAM controls. Apply an expiration that fits the recipient’s access window, limit who can create or delete links, and share VM credentials separately. Removing a link and changing VM credentials are distinct actions: the link controls access to the Bastion connection flow, while the VM’s own authentication controls sign-in.

Microsoft documents a maximum of 500 shareable links per Bastion resource and up to 50 create or delete shareable-link requests at a time. These are service limits, not performance-test results. If a target resource is deleted, its link may remain visible in the list but will no longer connect; you can remove it or retain it for auditing.
Known limitations and troubleshooting
- Certificate error with a custom domain: Custom domains are unsupported in this flow. Adding specific domains to the Bastion certificate’s CN or SAN may cause a certificate error. See Microsoft’s shareable-link troubleshooting guide.
- Reset Password does not work for local users: The button may appear in the shareable-link flow, but Microsoft says it does not work for local users connecting this way. If the user must change a password at first sign-in, arrange another supported credential workflow before sharing access.
- Link visible but connection fails: Check whether the target VM or scale set still exists, the link has not expired, the network placement is supported, and the recipient has valid VM credentials.
Cost and SKU considerations
Shareable Links are available on Standard and Premium, not Developer or Basic. Standard also includes configurable host scaling, native client access, IP-based connections, custom ports, and file transfer. Premium includes Standard features as well as session recording and private-only deployment; consult Microsoft’s current SKU comparison when choosing a tier.

Azure Bastion billing combines hourly SKU charges and outbound data transfer. Microsoft says the first 5 GB per month of outbound transfer is free for the listed paid tiers; the allowance and prices depend on the applicable pricing terms. Billing begins when Bastion is deployed, whether or not it is actively being used. Exact prices vary by region and configuration, so use Microsoft’s Bastion information and the live Azure pricing information for your deployment rather than relying on a single quoted amount.
